To many, the Avanthar are the wild horse masters of the Ularen Plains, great stretches of grassland and steppe found stretching across central and southern Daen. Once nothing but a radical cult at the fringes of Altalar society, the collapse of the Allorn Empire and the Wildering that came soon afterward birthed the Avanthar as they are known today while the cult continued on. The Avanthar profess the need for the Altalar to change with the wider world, to alter their pure Nelfin lineage with the blood of those more powerful than them in order to gain their best traits. For this reason, the ancestors of the Avanthar bred with Ailor, and those still living on Daen largely continue this practice, resulting in the all-Ailor Qússrakón Culture to form alongside them. Avanthar society is a far cry from the Altalar and Allorn Empire they came from, but still not as barbaric as many are made to think. The Avanthar engage in aggressive guerrilla-style warfare largely against the Eronidas, but also fight the Kathar, Altalar, and Ailor who encroach their territory or on the territory of their Cielothar allies. Despite being squeezed from all sides, the Avanthar still hold hope that they will one day cleanse their lands of enemy factions and take up a leading role in what they call the “Nelfellim,” the resurgence of a proper Allorn Empire.

Physical & Mental Characteristics

The Avanthar in many respects appear much like a half breed Race between Altalar and the Daendroque Ailor, due to excessive crossbreeding between the two Races, but they have since developed into a more formidable mixture of the two. Where-as most Half-Elves are usually limited in their ability to progress within either Elven or Human societies, the Avanthar have thrived on their mixed heritage and become something unlike either Race. Of all the Nelfin Races, the Avanthar are the best built for physical combat. They are large, beefy, and resilient against the rough lifestyle of the horseman nomads, and being usually of Athletic build due to their lifestyle. Through breeding, they have lost the angular features more common among the Elven Races, making for a more square jawline and exaggerated facial hair features. Their skin always ranges from a dark to medium brown to ochre tone, while their hair appears either black or dark auburn in color. Avanthar exclusively have bright blue eyes. In aging, the Avanthar are similar to the Altalar in that they effectively stop aging around their 25th birthday, though they always look considerably more gruff than the more delicate and elegant Altalar. They can live up to 100 years old retaining this youth, after which they degrade and eventually die of old age around 120 years old. The physical appearance of the Avanthar is often a well-planned product of their selective breeding as well as their changing physiology. Through years of carefully planned breeding and the manipulation of Genos by the Altalar, the Avanthar have powers to allow them to adapt exceptionally quickly to their environment, making them exceptional hunters and warriors in their native lands. A small portion (about a third or a fourth) of the Avanthar population possesses a Epicanthic fold, thus appearing more Asian-coded. These may be inherited along families, or appear randomly from two Avanthar parents.

The Avanthar, like the Altalar, are incredibly territorial and are highly protective of their property. Avanthar Bands will seek out Cielothar and Yanar groups, declaring the pacifists under their protection as a means of ensuring a constant supply of food and trade goods, regardless if the Cielothar or Yanar agree to this arrangement. Because Cielothar farms are often prey for the hostile Eronidas or Kathar raiders, the Avanthar keep an attentive eye on the camps at the edges of their territory, and treat any outsiders aggressively, knowing that they could be the forward guard to Eronidas or outsider Ailor encroachment. This very concept provides a complex relationship between the Daendroque Ailor and the Avanthar. While the Avanthar feel obligated to mingle their gene pool with that of the Daendroque Ailor and others Cultures from beyond Daen, they are also compelled to act hostile around them, as the Daendroque Ailor tend to take their supply of trade goods and food. In the past, this resulted in a system of kidnapping Ailor women to use as wives, but ultimately, this practice has largely stopped with the development of the Qússrakón as sufficient breeding stock. On top of their war-like mentality, the Avanthar make no use of Magic, believing in progressing the Nelfin Race towards military superiority through the use of material combat and not arcane tricks.

The Avanthar often have a superiority complex, much like the other Elven Races, but more so in context to the other Races. They see the Cielothar as ignorant lost children and the Altalar as squabbling no-good dwellers of the past, while the Isldar are seen as abandoning the Empire in a time of need. Finally, they view the Sihndar as odd if not useful distant brothers in arms, while the Kathar are strongly viewed as the root of all evil and the primary reason for the collapse of the Allorn Empire. The Avanthar truly see themselves as the salvation of all Nelfin Races and the only true fighters for the resurrection of the Allorn Empire. Avanthar are incredibly secluded and hard to gain the trust of. They have a strong sense of who the people they truly cherish are, and treat anything else as a stranger, for which each Avanthar often has a different term or name. That being said, when the trust of an Avanthar is gained, they tend to be loyal to the end and extremely forgiving for transgressions.

Half-Avanthar tend to be nearly indistinguishable from full Avanthar due to the historical cross-breeding that led to their emergence. The only distinguishing characteristics between a Half Avanthar and Full Avanthar are the Half Avanthar's slimmer, less bulky figure, and the single minor feature the Half Avanthar has inherited from their Non-Avanthar Parent. This feature often manifests as slightly rounded ears, a variant hair or eye color, or sharpened canines. Half Avanthar are somewhat common in Avanthar Society, finding general acceptance (as long as they can follow the society's standards and norms) due to their homogeneity, but are not as prevalent as, say, Half-Ailor, because of how secluded and untrusting Avanthar can be. Half Avanthar get the same Racial Abilities as Full Avanthar.

History

Avanthar always continue to appear tribalistic, even in civilized societies.

The Avanthar originated with the Cult of Suel from the Allorn Empire which began around 1000 BC. This body of scholars, Mages, and religious extremists was founded by the theologian-philosopher-mage Suel’lrodäd, an Altalar who had Half-Elven children with various Ailor slaves on purpose to help him prove his ideas about bloodlines and the blending of Races. Whatever the truth was, many Half-Elves flocked to him, but his group was constantly on the run, pursued by the other Cults of Altalar society who were determined to snuff out the perceived dangerous and disgusting philosopher. However, he had help from nobility who were more interested in his ideas of influencing childbirth through various magical means than with his ideas of combining their bloodlines with “lesser” Races. One of these individuals was a figure now known only as Prince Avan’tär. His claim of nobility is vague, some claim he was a son of the Allorn Empress and so a prince in the most direct sense while others say he was a more distant relation, and more like the rest of the Altalar nobility. But he was not like them for one core reason: his active protection of the Cult. He wasn’t as mercurial about his allegiances and did not abandon the Cult at the first sign of pressure; he firmly stuck by them and actively helped them pursue their goals. What he and his descendants got out of this support were warriors, bred and developed by the Suelites with each successive generation adapting better and better, with more “improvements” when compared to base Altalar. These warriors, known as Avan’tär’s Legion, served his province for years in secret and finally, in the final decades of the Allorn Empire, openly, when it detached itself from the Empire and went dark.

The Cult remained strong in the province up until the Wildering, which fractured the Cult and ended the Legion as a body under the control of the Altalar. Rather than return to the Altalar cities, the Avanthar as they now called themselves fled out into the plains of Daen, stating they were made to fulfill Suel’lrodäd’s purpose for them, and not to return to crumbling ruins with weak, lesser Elves. The original teachings of Suel had long been denied to them, as the Altalar mages and cult leaders saw themselves merely as experiments and subjects, not fit to actively operate out the Cult founder’s vision. But they disagreed after reading what he had written and so vanished into the wilds as a result. The remaining Cult of Suel that chose not to follow after them instead headed for the coasts, returning to urban life, where they have remained to this day. Meanwhile, the Avanthar encountered newly liberated Ailor slaves, freed from bondage after centuries, and living on the plains for only a few months to a year. Despite their limited numbers, the power of the muscled and militarily skilled Avanthar allowed them to capture many of these Ailor, and so the Avanthar came to rule the Ularen Plains. They also adapted quickly to the lifestyle of horsemen, developing tactics to harry the invading Eronidas who crawled at the edges of their land. By 30 AC, the Avanthar were a sizable force in Daen if not a fractured one. The Elders of the time moved for the leadership of their people to unify and come beneath a single Royal Encampment located in the Ularen Valley. The selection process at this gathering was short but relatively bloodless as the Avanthar Princes were elected to their roles as the leaders of five Avanths, who then separated out their lands and routes of nomadic travel accordingly. With this official body of state formed, the Avanthar were also able to better deal with their former Race. While they largely disliked the Altalar, those found in the Northern Kingdoms sought an alliance with the Avanthar. In return for the Avanthar helping these Kingdoms against their enemies, especially the Eronidas, the Altalar would provide resources and support when reasonable. The deal was straightforward and somewhat redundant, as the Avanthar had already been fighting off the Eronidas. This deal, however, formalized their position as a buffer region between Ailor in the east, Eronidas in the southwest, and Altalar in the north.

It was also during this time that the Avanthar encountered the Cielothar in large numbers, and formed a symbiotic relationship with them. In exchange for Avanthar protection and trade goods such as bones and pelts, Cielothar tribes provide the Avanthar with several specialty commodities unfound anywhere else such as specific floral products, beads, and colorful cloth. This arrangement worked out well for decades, and both parties prospered. The Avanthar continued to flex and master their Cast and Evolutionary Abilities, and became well known outside of Daen as mercenaries and fierce warriors of the plains. However, their ability to integrate on their own terms has been largely thwarted in the past few decades. First came the Ranger Crisis, where the Avanthar failed to effectively aid the Cielothar, while also incurring the anger of the Regalian Empire when their invasion force was surrounded and harried in the middle of the great plains the Avanthar called home. Less than a decade later, the Avanthar again suffered a loss when the Northern Elven Kingdoms fell to the Empire in 302 AC, Avanthar warriors fighting for the Altalar in the opening stages of the war not going unnoticed by the Regalians. The Regalian alliance with Eronidas only worsened tensions, and just as other nations of Aloria were announcing great projects of unity, the Avanthar, Cielothar, Yanar, and Qússrakón Ailor of the plains formed The Wild Union to defend themselves. But finally, in 306 AC, the greatest destruction of all came to the Avanthar. Engaging in war with the Regalian Empire and ravaging their holdings in Daendroc, the Avanthar demanded that Emperor Cedromar I come and do penance for all the wrongs suffered by the Avanthar at the hands of Ailor.

In response, the Emperor came, but through the use of a magical cart, brought with him a troupe of merciless fighters while he himself transformed into the Imperial Dragon (a power he had newly discovered to possess at the time). The Regalians with their Dragon Emperor obliterated the Royal Encampment, every Avanthar Prince dying within a matter of hours alongside their sons, daughters, wives, and guards, with a death toll of over 5,000. Immediately following this atrocity, order between the Tribes collapsed and resulted in a civil war that lasted months. Regalia, for its part, completely turned away from the Avanthar to focus on other threats, though the Eronidas of the west came into the plains, taking advantage of the chaos to push their territory. In 307 AC, some level of order was restored by a new cabal of Avanthar Princes who now rule their people, who begrudgingly respect the Ailor. The Royal Encampment is now a wasteland in remembrance of Regalian but also Ailor power, while the nomadic routes of the Avanthar have been greatly disrupted by all this conflict. It will take years for them to fully heal, and was not helped by the Dread War which caused large Altalar, Regalian and Regalian-allied armies to move through the Plains to reach the frontline. Yet, the Avanthar played their part, largely paid off by the Altalar to stomach their discomfort with the action and with the end of the War, have now returned to their former ways in many places, albeit with a more careful step where the Regalian Empire is involved.

Society

Often seen from the outside as cold, nasty, and brutish, Avanthar society revolves around wanderlust mixed with protectionism. Avanthar society as a whole was mostly focused around the Royal Encampment, a central point that acted as a hub in the middle of the Ularen Valley, which was the only permanently settled Avanthar tribe. The Avanths all served as parts of this united federation, traveling the countryside while scavenging, hunting, and defending their Cielothar cousins. But in recent years, the Tribes have fought each other and the Qússrakón, bringing chaos to this system of order before only recently returning to that order, albeit with new leaders and new goals. Being nomadic in nature, Avanthar Tribes place a heavy value on horseback riding. Children are taught to ride and shoot from a horse at a very young age and are often skilled at the Casecabilo, or the Horse-hunt, which they use to round up wild stallions on the plains for use in their herds or keep their herds under control.

Culture

Families and Romance

Matters of romance and family among the Avanthar is a highly complex affair thanks to the strong Avanthar belief in Genos. Genos, in the Avanthar philosophy, is the substance of an individual or a Race, with factors and aspects that denote good and bad Genos. As much as Regalians often compare this to an Avanthar version of Soldi (the Velheim belief in good and bad weighing on a soul), Genos is far more all-encompassing. It includes physical features very prominently, while honor and success in combat are often second-place. As a result, physically fit, Tribe-aligned Avanthar ultimately have very little control of their own love life. From when they show promise to their Day of Bonding (the Avanthar term for marriage), the Avanthar Elders will be responsible for their match. This completely ignores an individual's preferences, or their own sexual orientation, all in the name of the Avanthar way of life. Bonded Pairs, as they are called, are often expected to uphold normal life, and so most acquiesce to the requirements of the societal role. As for others who lack perfect or near-perfect Genos, generally, they are free to live and choose their partners as they wish. These Avanthar commonly practice “polygamy” though it would be more correct to say that they simply do not engage in marriage, and so do not view multiple partners as sinful, wrong, or unnatural in any way. Some Bonded Pairs, especially those with one or both having different orientations or preferences, also engage in polygamy though they must still do their duty to the Tribe, and actively seek to bring forth new, better children with their Bonded Partner.

As a result, a traditional family unit is almost exotic to Avanthar society, not only because of several mother-figures but also for several father-figures, all living and working together in close proximity with perhaps no knowledge of one’s actual birth father. Some Bonded Pairs do have a more stable family, being the sole parental figures in their children’s lives, but this is made further rare by the fact that most Avanthar children are raised almost apart from home. Starting at the age of 5, Avanthar youths are separated from the parents for increasingly longer periods of time, spending that time with the Elders and learning basic skills and knowledge from them about how to live and survive on the Plains. It is also during this time that they are taught the Casecabilo, and by the age of 10, are expected to have captured a horse to call their own. This continues until the age of 15, at which point a young Avanthar can choose who to live with, often returning to their families but sometimes striking out on their own, or staying with the Elders. As a result of all this control, mixed with total freedom, and a generally stoic disposition, it is commonly said that romance is alien to the Avanthar. This is actually true, as Avanthar rarely woo each other, or engage in extensive foreplay or buildup toward an end result. Instead, when finally alone, they are extremely sensual and loving, as skin contact (much like in Eronidas Culture) is seen as a highly intimate act that makes up for any and all lacking romance beforehand. Still, the lack of affection can be off-putting for most non-Avanthar companions, and some Avanthar have therefore bent themselves to accommodate outsiders, Ailor companions in particular.

Language

The Avanthar originated the tongue known as Plains Elven, though it is also a common tongue among the Cielothar who the Avanthar encountered soon after their expansion out into the Ularen Plains. The tongue has an alien sound to it, with only snippets derived from Modern Altalar, and instead features a much higher amount of starts and stops. It also makes use of some hand gestures as a practical form of gesticulation, and as a way to convey other forms of intent than what is being said. Why the Language is so foreign to other forms of Nelfin Language is completely unknown. To the Altalar, it is proof of the backwards nature of the Avanthar and Cielothar, though others suspect that Plains Elven began as a further simplification of Modern Altalar by the militaristic Avan’tär’s Legion. Over time, the simplification developed into its own tongue spoken only by the Legion, and it expanded after contact with the Cielothar necessitated greater complexity. Adding to the problems of tracking the path of Plains Elven are regional variations between the five Avanths that, while all mutually intelligible, can sometimes cause subtlety or complexity to be lost in communication. The Language has no written form, leaving 90% of Avanthar illiterate.

Lifestyle and Leisure

The Avanthar lifestyle has been that of horselords for centuries, even before the Cataclysm, as their predecessors were always well trained in the ways of the horse. The Avanthar of today have an almost born desire for the saddle, and riding out in the great, open Ularen Plains. They additionally are quite comfortable living simply, and generally lack for excess, not because it isn’t available to them, but because they had traditional views against such indulgences. This is true especially after the destruction of the Royal Encampment, the only site of any sort of excess in the Avanthar realm. Avanthar days are generally spent in manual labor from dawn to dusk, for both genders, and most ages. Men often hunt or herd during the day, assisted in the latter by women though many others instead prepare food, gather local materials, and organize the affairs of camp, with children weaving in and out of all of these tasks based on their various ages. Avanthar leisure is rare due to this constantly active life, and often only comes during special holidays in their society where work is concentrated on the camp, allowing men to smoke Tabacca and for once, not provide for the camp as a whole. The Avanthar lack much with regard to formal games, and instead engage in tests of skill and strength, both on horseback and not, as both a form of training and a test of one’s Genos, often to applause and hollering by gathered onlookers.

Clothing

Avanthar clothing is generally limited, given that the terrain they occupy is commonly warm, and their lifestyle makes the active weaving of cloth a task they shirk. Instead, some 80% of Avanthar clothing comes from the Cielothar, with the remaining portion often being Avanthar modifications on existing clothing as given to them by trading partners. Most wear minimalistic hide trousers, lacking undergarments, and use leather harnesses to adorn their torsos, and to hold certain weapons in reserve should they be needed. Female Avanthar follow a similar pattern, but instead, cover their chests with colorful cloth as given to them by the Cielothar. This clothing often ranges from blue to green colored cloth, with all shades in between. Some Avanthar, especially in colder climates or in regions that commonly rain, wear an additional garment, called the Päncha (commonly Commonized as “Poncho”). A half-body cloak that only reaches to around the waist, the Avanthar have the Cielothar make them to help their Bands fight off colds and illness, at least in those areas where they need it. Then, there are the ornaments and jewelry of the Avanthar people. Most are bead-based and come from trade with outsiders, and can exist in all sorts of forms on clothing and even on skin, as piercings of the ear and eyebrow, while the mouth and nose are much rarer. They also wear Copper, Brass, or Bronze jewelry provided by the Cielothar or Altalar. The only material the Avanthar desperately avoid is Gold, given that they believe it to be a corrupting substance in the wake of the destruction of the Royal Encampment, which had much Gold within it.

Art

The Avanthar are people not known for their artwork, and that is a logical extension of the way their society operates. Heavily devoted to the warrior way, a majority of Avanthar get their goods and more from the Cielothar, Yanar, and other trade partners rather than making it themselves. This extends to their fashion and a large number of their material objects, though there are a few pieces of Avanthar artistic expression unique to their Race, and not exported from elsewhere. Firstly, bone carving is a common hobby of Avanthar who have free time and a bone to pick at. Most end up being abstract, minor pieces quickly discarded when the need arises, but others have noticed the detail in the iconography and imagery associated with the Avanthar interpretation of the Altalar Pantheon. Some have actively sought to collect them, and so most end up being traded away Avanthar who have the capacity to make more, and the need to acquire goods or indebted a trader to them. The remains of Avanthar artistic skill are all tied into one common theme: their gear. Be they Avant Axes or their saddles, upon receiving goods from outsiders, some Avanthar weave and add their own additions to the pieces. Some affix feathers or small hunting trophies to their gear, while others decorate their saddles with patterning suggestive of the sky or a particular mythical figure. Obviously of course, the wood used in the handles of Avant Axes is also up for carving, though such work is often minor and lacking much detail, lest it weaken the weapon.

Cuisine

The Avanthar are not well known for their cooking. This mainly comes down to their consumption of foods that most Ailor dislike, though much to the surprise of some, they have actually taken and improved the food of a few regions, while retaining their own unique culinary identity. Common meals shared by all Avanthar are primarily meat-based, often cooked and eaten simply over fires with limited seasoning given their rugged lifestyle and general desire to avoid lugging what are essentially useless luxury items. Additionally, they have created a few meat products that they enjoy consuming, such as Pemëwasna, a mixture of dried meat, tallow, and berries with a highly energizing factor. This dish points to the other half of Avanthar cuisine, that being substances collected by women during the course of the day. This most commonly means berries, which make up a part of Pemëwasna, but also involves mares milk and in some cases, eggs from wild bird nests. There is also the dish of Bannuc, a foreign form of bread, but one that the Avanthar have mastered to suit their lifestyle. However, due to the vast spread of the Avanthar, culinary practices between the Avanths are quite different from one another and despite these overarching features, some have unique attributes local to particular regions.

  • Avanth Antu: Isolated and existing close to Altalar lands, Antuvak Cuisine makes use of foreign spices and seasonings much more, as well as using the occasional fish from rivers and the sea to supplement traditional meat sources. They are additionally known for hunting and taking down some game from the northern jungles of Daendroc.
  • Avanth Rokhaal: Now the food of the largest Avanth, Rokhaalan Cuisine often makes use of many traditional culinary methods, with minor additions from trade goods and the diverse terrain. Uniquely, they are known to eat horses more commonly than the other Avanths, thanks to a healthy culinary injection from the Qússrakón Ailor that heavily populate the region.
  • Avanth Olmaat: Olmaatass Cuisine is considered the objectively oddest form of Avanthar cuisine, as the people of this Avanth easily ply the waters and offshoot swamps of the Talaï Sea. Crustaceans and amphibians, alien to Avanthar cuisine, exist uncommonly in combination with other goods from foreign powers given the long border Olmaat shares with the eastern Ailor Daen states.
  • Avanth Himvatheer: Himva Cuisine is the plainest and most traditional of all Avanthar cuisines with plenty of Mooan meat, some traded plant and animal products, alongside the occasional consumption of foreign goods at certain religious events.
  • Avanth Hortutor: Hortutoral Cuisine is commonly viewed as the most robust out of all Avanthar cuisines given the constant lack of need or want. Able to easily access and hunt the edges of the Hȏrtutor Wildlands, forest and jungle animals like squirrels, rabbits, and a wide variety of birds are easily bagged by the Avanthar of this region, in addition to the variety of berry plants readily available for picking. As a result, they often trade meat and their many varieties of Pemëwasna to others instead of using it all themselves.

Architecture

The Avanthar know only one type of structure, that being a form of tent called a Thëpeec. They are simple in design, being a number of poles ranging from ten to fifteen in number, and fifteen to eighteen feet in length, established at the supports for the tent. They all met at the top, and are tied together while their bases are spread out in a circular shape, usually with a total diameter of ten feet. Then, hide coverings are affixed and wrapped around the wooden poles, forming the walls of the tent, with a special flapped hide affixed at the ground level for entry and exit. Such tents inside then had a majority of a family’s belongings, such as bedding and weapons. Some also could have fires set in them, with the smoke leaving through the opening at the top, but most Avanthar keep their fires communal, outside of their homes for general use. Larger Thëpeec do exist, utilizing a more complex wood structure, but almost all of them were burned when the Royal Encampment was destroyed, with the remainder becoming significant status symbols for the new leaders of the five Avanths, who all own at least one. All forms of the Thëpeec are easily packed away and dragged by the horses the Avanthar tame and ride, as the Avanthar lack the use of the wheel.

Law and States

As a society, the Avanthar are extremely diverse in their forms of law and order, mainly due to their spread across thousands of miles, and interactions with half a dozen Races and over two dozen regional states of Daen. However, at the core of their system of belief is that might makes right. In response to crimes and violence, leadership of Bands and whole Tribes advocate that those involved “work it out,” which has often led to physical duels between two parties, either working on behalf of the accused or accuser. Sometimes, the community needs to witness them and other times not, sometimes the Elders must watch but no one else, and sometimes the two combatants are made to leave the camp and fight in total isolation. However, for lesser matters like theft or accusations of breaking Avanthar beliefs, or the individual beliefs of the Band, arbitration by the Elders and the sitting Chëttran (the Avanthar gender-neutral term for “Chief”) are required. Decisions by them are usually final, and all parties, after their differences have been settled and the matters of law enacted, are expected to get along. However, this often bred silent feuds and in the recent Civil War, might makes right was a dangerous mindset as thousands of Avanthar died in combat over such feuds, or due to being led by commanders seeking to affirm their power and might over others. Today, a majority of Avanthar must now bring their problems before the Elders and the Chëttran, though the old ways endure in some minor Bands scattered across the Ularen Plains.

It is also important to understand the system of order within Avanthar society, as most Ailor and Altalar throw around the terms of clan, band, tribe, or even corps interchangeably to describe what the structure of these lords of the Ularen Plains is. It begins with the family. A family is a set group of individuals who have chosen to live, work and eat in close proximity, and to share a last name. Bonded Pairs always have them, but some Avanthar go their entire lives without ever subscribing to the concept and solely have one name. Bands are the level above families, and are groups of families numbering anywhere from three to twenty all living in close proximity to each other, and migrating when the others migrate. They are led by dual leaders called the Cabäss and Pië’ssa, who trade-off in their involvement in war and domestic affairs. There can be as many as twenty Bands in a single Tribe and in total, sixteen Tribes call the Ularen Plains home. There have been more, but after the recent civil war, several were absorbed, dissolved, or destroyed. Below is listed the organization of Avanthar society, from the top to the bottom.

  • Forming the top of the Avanthar leadership are the five Avanth Princes. The leaders of the most powerful Tribe in an Avanth, the Avanth Princes are all new leaders given the chaos of the Royal Encampment’s obliteration and subsequent civil war. They have a high degree of power within their own Avanth, though not absolute, and the position is not heredity, at least not yet.
  • Next there are the Tribal Princes or Princesses, the leaders of the other regional Avanth Tribes, capable of being either men or women. They often follow the example of the Avanth Prince, but can attempt to claim the higher position through manipulations and defeating their opponent in combat. These positions are dual, with two such leaders per Tribe, with one handling military matters while another handles domestic affairs. Ideally, they trade off each time the military leader returns home. These positions are called the Cabäss and the Pië’ssa.
  • Below them are the mundane Cabäss and Pië’ssa, who each lead a Band attached to a Tribe. The military one of the two retains their title while out riding where or when required, and while they are gone, the title of Chëttran is used solely by the remaining leader. So, a Cabäss staying with his band while the Pië’ssa leaves is called a Chëttran-Cabäss. The title is abandoned when both are back within the Band, though it is used when one or both sit in judgment over a situation.
  • Then there are the Elders, a collection of the oldest members of Avanthar society. Though they often heavily advise the Princes and Band leaders, they are technically subservient to them, and so exist as a form of community council. They also play a major role in raising the young, and so still lead busy lives even in their old age. To be considered an Elder, one must be 90 years of age or older.
  • The last level of the society are the Pröta’ll, essentially captains or leaders in the Avanthar military. The Cabäss and Pië’ssa each have several people in this role, and while half leave when either position departs for combat, the other half stay and work to train not just the adults, but also the teenagers and future warriors. They themselves are often veterans, aged around 50, and tend to be the patriarchs of families, often training their own children just as they would any others.

Avanthar Nobility

Avanthar Nobility seems like an alien concept to the Avanthar way of life, and in some ways, it was. While their society emphasized the importance of martial strength and the general equality of their population, exceptions existed within their nobility, a caste of political players who, for over two centuries, led the Avanthar in general unity. Their nobles were a byproduct of their origins, and were originally selected from the winners of contests and games held at the first great gathering of Avanthar in 30 AC. They were also selected for the strange fact that they had “better bloodlines”, excluding their Genos, and traced their lineage back to offspring of the Avatars of Ulley, called Ulbannör by the Avanthar. The nobility then established themselves in a freshwater spring and small forest that was eventually formed into the Royal Encampment, a permanent, enclosed capital where by 306 AC 5,000 people eventually came to call home. These included guards for the Avanthar Princes and their families, servants in the form of Qússrakón Ailor and other Avanthar, and also the odd trading group or emissaries from foreign powers. Technically, the Royal Encampment oversaw all Avanths, and the leadership of each Avanth were often lesser Princes, subservient to the highest caste. Often considered closest to Altalar in mind, though certainly not in body, the Avanthar Nobility of old is now dead. The entire Royal Encampment was eliminated by Cedromar I in his Dragon form, being aided by a cabal of warriors assembled to aid him in his attack. The civil war that followed revealed the truth about the Encampment: it had been the only thing keeping the Avanthar warrior spirit from turning on itself. After the war, a new cast of Avanthar Nobility rose and still rules the Avanths to this day. No member of them holds a position of pure ceremony and unlike the Royal Encampment, they do not speak for an Avanth that is not their own. Instead, the Avanths must meet and work together in a plan, though this is quite difficult since their civil war. Their first and only meeting thus far was on the establishment of new boundaries for each Avanth, with the coming years likely to bring more meetings, though all in a secret location.

Education and Childhood

Avanthar childhood is often considered a messy affair by outsiders, but to the Avanthar, they know no other way, and are used to what outsiders consider strange and alien. Avanthar children are raised in their households alone until the age of five, at which point they begin to be separated for afternoons, then afternoons and evenings, and finally sleeping over fully, in and around the Avanthar Elders of their Band. During this time, they are educated on the Avanthar ways of life, on their history, religion, and as they grow older, on how to perform tasks or excel in certain fields. The Pröta’ll also play a significant role in the raising of the children Avanthar aside from the Elders. These “heroes of the tribe” are masters at horsemanship and bowmanship, and it is also their responsibility to teach the children the oral traditions of the Avanthar in times of peace alongside the Elders, who share this responsibility. Throughout this period, Avanthar children are not divided by gender, and instead, often sleep side by side, and learn side by side, usually with their own brothers and sisters though Avanthar family units make such designations hard to truly determine. At the age of 15, this schooling comes to an end, and an Avanthar child is considered to have entered the Chävan, a period of ten years until they are 25 when ideally, they will fully mature and express their ultimate, final form of Genos. During the Chävan, they are allowed to find their own path, being allowed to strike out and join another family or found their own, return to their existing family, or stay with the elders, to help continue to care for them. During the Chävan, education with the Pröta’ll drastically increase as an individual hones their skills. Most Avanthar youths finish their Chävan by traveling, either abroad to beyond Daen, or simply across the Plains to meet other Bands and Tribes. At 25, when they pause in the aging process, an Avanthar is considered a full adult. In that same year, Bonded Pairs are often formed, and the cycle then begins again.

Avanthar States

Avanth Antu

Avanth Antu was formerly one of the more powerful Avanths in the Ularen Plains, with a prestigious role as the main actors in the previous deal that had existed between the Avanthar and the Northern Elven Kingdoms of the Alexandros Mountain Chain. However, after fighting briefly with their allies in the Elven War of 302 AC, the Avanthar retreated, fearing reprisal. As a result, a large swath of territory they had over the northern reaches of the Plains were taken, and in the civil war that came later, Avanth Rokhaal absorbed a further third of the Avanth’s territory. Now, Avanth Antu largely hugs the Western Calms, and does battle with the regional Polons as it fights to maintain its greatly weakened existence. They are the least accepting of the current Avanthar belief that the Regalian Empire is the strongest world state, and their population is also the angriest with the new order of the Plains. Some suspect they may be aiding in the frequent uprisings in the nearby Minaal Protectorate, but this is just speculation based on their current attitude. They are made up of the Salta, Syäna and Cri’iväl Tribes.

Avanth Rokhaal

Encompassing the unusually chilly region of the Selldr’velle Steppes, a large portion of the northern Ularen Plains, and now possessing the largest territory, Avanth Rokhaal is poised to lead the Avanthar Race into the future. Their people have long been friendly to Ailor, as much as Avanthar can be, with multiple Qússrakón Ailor absorbed into their society over the past century with additional “respect” offered in a high number of foreign unions between Avanthar and outsider Ailor. With the auxiliary horse power of the Qússrakón, the Avanthar of Avanth Rokhaal have often also been a major force in military matters associated with the eastern lands of Daen. It was they who were primarily engaged in the Ranger Crisis, and they were also the group who contributed the most to the rampaging force of Avanthar who swept through the Ailor states of the region. Since the end of the civil war, their leadership has been remarkably stable and united, with several women also holding key positions of power as the Avanth here makes strides to repair regional relations with foreigners as well as absorb the last numbers of Qússrakón into their Bands. They are made up of the Apäthee, Nëgepien, Wythëtma, and Tëyäs Tribes.

Avanth Olmaat

Avanth Olmaat is seen as the staunchest and more conservative of all the five existing Avanth. Their territory held the Royal Encampment, and in the wake of its destruction, have only begrudgingly accepted a general superiority of the Regalian Empire. Elsewhere, the Avanth is oddly the only Avanth with only male leadership, at least on the surface. Observers have noted that these leaders are often “advised” by female Elders, likely their mothers, suggesting a rather familiar situation to Ailor military officials: that of a male facade over female leadership. Despite this, Avanth Olmaat suffered the most direct chaos of the five during the civil war and its population has largely retreated into isolation, though they still actively trade with regional Cielothar settlements. They are made up of the Shytay, Iöwak, and Tri’syaw Tribes.

Avanth Himvatheer

In direct opposition to Avanth Olmaat is the rather liberal and free Avanth Himvatheer, extremely friendly toward foreigners and external Races for the possibilities they offer of expanding and improving an individual’s Genos, as well as the Genos of the Avanth overall. They are also seen as the most peaceful Avanth, given their longstanding treaties with Sol Fazais over the Himvatheer Road, the only safe road through Avanthar lands to the Altalar States beyond. They were still wracked by conflict in the civil war, but were the first Avanth to condemn and end the chaos within their borders, followed shortly thereafter by their southern sisters in the Avanth Hortutor. The Himvatheer now look to get the trade lanes going again though the Juvvondor Plains, so that they might again benefit from frequent contact with the outside world. They are made up of the Ravän, Kotanna, and Hydästas Tribes.

Avanth Hortutor

Avanth Hortutor has commonly been seen by external Altalar as the epitome of Avanthar barbarity. Indeed, Hortutor is perhaps the wildest of all Avanths given its restless population. Easily able to harvest food from the forests of the Wildlands within their territory and that of Ol Lavei Aechir, their Bands are known to routinely violate borders in their travels though to call the vast, empty plains of northern Tanaar Llarana and eastern Tanaar Hyä-Ereya uncrossable boundaries is quite the overstatement. Additionally, they are considered the “wildest” Avanthar due to their constant conflict with the Wolathar Kathar of the Wor’lasïs Wald. They have adapted themselves to suitably combat these wild, vengeful Kathar by hardening themselves for battle, painting their bodies and faces, and dying their hair and placing feathers and more to give as fierce an appearance as possible. Their “screamers” are the most well known of all Avanths, and while they have been effective, they have frequently also clashed with Altalar desiring them to keep to their lands, and to “civilize”. They are made up of the T’ivansör, T’brassni and T’ojkan Tribes.

Combat and Warfare

The Avanthar are quite possibly the most warlike of the Nelfin Races, being physically stronger and more capable than their often smaller cousins. They are trained to fight almost exclusively on horseback, using Avant Axes (small hand axes), composite bows and sometimes spears in their combat as part of the School of Avant. When Avanthar are forced to fight on foot, their deceptively agile and aggressive fighting style wielding a pair of Avant Axes is a sight to fear. It is not unheard of for them to try to throw their axes, with the Pröta’ll of their society often having developed skill in throwing their axes at a target. They are also masters of guerilla tactics and terror efforts, commonly screaming, whooping and hollering as they bear down on an enemy to invite terror and cause their targets to flinch. Also, due to their unique abilities, they are often capable of quickly disappearing from sight into the undergrowth of the jungle or the thick grasses of the Ularen Plains, and can present quite the difficult target in one on one wilderness duels. They often practice hit and run raids on outlying Eronidas Estates, and they also raided into the myriad of states in western Daendroc, especially in the lead up to and in the wake of the Ranger Crisis. Unfortunately, the devastation wrought by their civil war has forced them to retreat from such offensive actions.

Besides raiding these two groups, the Avanthar also focus on protecting the Cielothar and Yanar, who they see as innocent and pure younger siblings. In this, they are frequently drawn into conflict against Ailor groups wanting to take Cielothar land for mining, lumber, etc. or against Kathar, most commonly Wolathar, who ride out against their fair cousins seeking destruction. As a result of these efforts, most Avanthar Tribes are spread thin of late, as the recent Dread War has substantially emboldened the Wolathar to attack their favored targets. In addition to these well-known traits of their warfare, Avanthar are known to completely avoid any long drawn out battles, as both their numbers and their military tactics are not suitable for a structured war and are, instead, made for hit and run affairs. They can form large armies when the need is dire though, yet these all-cavalry forces essentially instigate large-scale hit and run tactics on a region, rushing through it, pillaging and destroying where possible before fleeing to perform it elsewhere in the state. This happened in the Regalian-Altalar War, when Emperor Cedromar retracted the Regalian Military’s troops from most eastern Daendroc states, resulting in a vast army of Avanthar descending and pillaging them. The Avanthar were unable to breach any major city, but the countryside was still reduced to chaos, and thousands flocked to, and crowded the cities for months in the wake of these actions.

Religion

Avanthar religion is a very complex and difficult matter to address due to the depth that existed before 306 AC, but also due to the reduction in that complex web of belief beginning in 307 AC. The Avanthar have a faith that is a variation on the Altalar Faith of Estel, and likely diverged either soon before or after they set out on their own into the Ularen Plains. To the Avanthar, Estel is a physical being, the embodiment of the earth, sky, and life itself, but especially the plains. Open, easily caressed by her winds, and growing fertile, wild things everywhere, the Plains are where Estel’s presence is most felt. In Avanthar faith, she birthed the Pantheon and while they, for a time, roamed the world, she ultimately inserted them into the heavens to provide light and guidance to the world at night after seeing how dark the evening could be in her creation sometime around 800 BC, coincidentally, the same time that the Avatars of the Gods ceased to walk the earth. The Avanthar do not believe in the divinity of Talea, and only consider her to be the founder of the Allorn Empire. To worship their gods, Avanthar will often stare up at the stars from their camps in the Plains, and practice rituals involving dancing around a fire while singing to the Gods for blessings while drums are beaten and simple flutes are played. Their religious ceremonies use chanting in Plains Elven. The eight Gods they worship in this way are as follows:

  • Ulbannör, the Guardian: Ulbannör, adapted from Ulley, is often spoken of as an Avanthar warrior through and through, with a great beard of braided hair and a fierce disposition, protecting the weak but useful and embodying Avanthar beliefs. He wields two axes known as the Ulba Axes, and they are a notable feature of his constellation, sometimes separated out and known in wider Alorian astronomy.
  • Llen’voma, the Breeder: Llen’voma, adapted from Ellea, is often depicted as a very Altalar-like figure with long hair and as the on-off again lover to many of the male gods. She is also considered a tender of animals, and a matchmaker, helping to find the greatest pairs for the strongest and healthiest children. It is said that lovers who consummate their first night beneath her light are blessed.
  • Janue’ll, the Giantess: Janue’ll, adapted from Vallea, is a large and powerful woman of unknown Race possessing great strength that is often described as lacking intellect. She makes up for this in her obedience and service to the other gods, helping them to defeat foes or support them in their goals. She’s also sometimes said to literally support the sky.
  • Hässadri, the Scholar: Hässadri, adapted from Sca’Elle, is often seen as a male Avanthar Elder with a long braided beard and a pension for knowing all things. He often tries to educate Janue’ll or rebuff Llen’voma with questions as to her conduct. He is also said to be the eldest male offspring of Estel.
  • Baënveka, the Raider: Baënveka, adapted from Aish-eia, is depicted, curiously, to either be in an Avanthar Casting or Evolution constantly. He is sneaky, stealthy and tricky, being seen as the epitome of Avanthar raiding tactics. His constellation, however, depicts him as a man of action, clutching his bow Iso’ll-Nä as he fires from a distance at the enemies of the Avanthar.
  • Sesenno, the Musician: Sesenno is the least masculine of the male deities, and the only one not taken directly from the Altalar Pantheon. He is often portrayed as a flowery young Avanthar and the least capable. However, if angered or seeing the weak picked upon, he can drastically turn in appearance and personality. This enraged, powerful, practically bestial form is credited with teaching the Avanthar their powerful war cry.
  • Almmon-Pra, the Light-bearer: Almmon-Pra, adapted from Ammu-Loa, is depicted as possessing a cloaked female form, and is occasionally described as a bringer of fate. However, her main task as the final female deity created by Estel is to carry the moon across the sky, which she does regularly, dimming the “lamp” of the moon to conserve fuel before scavenging more to feed the fire. She is also described as the force which deals with death, and her fuel is sometimes said to be Soul Essence.
  • Rëjoji’ll, the Healer: Rëjoji’ll, adapted from Sei-Maan, is routinely seen as the eldest female deity created by Estel and is often spoken of as an old Cielothar healer. It is to her that the Avanthar pray for health and good fortune, but she is also a symbol of motherhood and nature. She is also sometimes said to be the first god created by Estel and served alongside her mother for eons nurturing the world until her siblings came into being.

The Avanthar, when outside of their lands, usually accept and convert these gods to the names of gods found in the surrounding region, which made Ailor mischaracterize them for centuries as Old Gods worshipers even though, technically, that is not their faith. Among the five Avanths though, Dragon Worship, Unionism and half a dozen other religions existed, serving as a source of friction between the people who worshiped them as the individualism of the Avanthar did not deny them such pluralism. However, the collapse of order in 306 AC essentially wiped the slate, as people following minor faiths were either killed or converted while Dragon Worship completely vanished from the Avanthar, horrified and angered by the “abuse” of the wonderous “Primal Energies” Dragons supposedly have access to, while Unionists were similarly persecuted, for obvious reasons. Avanthar who retained these “dangerous” or fringe faiths are often now found in Ailor settlements, exiled from their homeland either by choice or necessity to survive. As a result of this purge, but also a desire to remain independent and avoid outside influence on their society, their traditional faith is on the rise and is slowly being fleshed out to more depth because of this. This is the case despite the Avanthar belief in Ailor “superiority,” and the denial of other faiths continues in their Avanths.

The Strong Six

The Strong Six are a subcategory of Avanthar religion as while a variety of faiths were worshipped by their population until recently, the Strong Six were always believed in, and far more common as a feature of religious festivals or stories around the fire. The Strong Six are six of the first Avanthar, dating back to centuries to the Cult of Suel, and performed many great feats and acts in the name of Suel’lrodäd, their father. Whether these six were actually the first six children born to the philosopher-scholar as he began his experiments is unknown, but despite almost certainly all being Half-Elves in their time, the Strong Six are remembered as full-blooded Avanthar today. Three are male, and two are female, while one has a gender-neutral name and actions, but all carried out at least one great act that aided the Allorn Empire, albeit no Altalar know this truth. They certainly have learned of it through Avanthar storytelling, and consider it wholly ridiculous. Still, the Avanthar fully believe in the Strong Six and tell tales of their brave acts to this day.

  • Äpi’sirä: Also known as the Star Warrior, Äpi’sirä wielded a special Nightsilver axe gifted to him by his father Suel’lrodäd. With it, he slew the leader of the Cult of Dawn, an extremist Altalar cult who sought to bring about a new dawn of the Allorn Empire by burning all of Daen, and emerging at the new dawn of a second Allorn Empire. Some have seen this as an allegory for a fight against the Kathar, and most modern stories of Äpi’sirä make clear allusions to the Void and the Cult. However, given the sheer number of Cults across the vastness of Daen, it is just as likely that the group was a group that was truly that extreme.
  • Kataya: A female warrior, she was taken by the enemies of Suel’lrodäd at the age of five and locked in a tower to deny her freedoms. However, she did not despair, training herself and becoming so strong that she freed herself just as her twin siblings Conynes and Conynsï arrived to rescue her. She then went on to be what most would term a vigilante, delivering justice and saving the wronged and downtrodden of the Allorn Empire while wielding a stave called the Bloodbringer given how many bodies it bashed bloody in its time.
  • Conynes and Conynsï: The most famous of the Strong Six, they were twins who were born but separated by fate when they were children. A beast of the plains took Conynsï away, but failed to finish its kill, making the child grow up feral. But then, when the wild child had grown, he encountered his long lost twin Conynes, and the two felled the beast that had broken their bond over two decades earlier. After that, they traveled together, frequently appearing alongside other Strong Six members, and are credited as taming two Casecabillas Stallions, themselves twins, called Ras and Shal, who later would go on to be the breeding stock for dozens of Stallions for use by future Avanthar.
  • Bi’yu: A child born and raised normally by Suel’lrodäd, she was transported far across the Allorn Empire by a tornado that came ripping through the Ularen Plains when she was 20. She then fought her way back using all of the skills her father had taught to her, while meeting an array of companions and foes. She ultimately marries “one like her”, assumed by most to be a Half-Elf, and is often called the mother of the Olmaat, since they most strongly associate with her mythos.
  • Mostë’eve: The only child of the Strong Six to never have an established gender, this individual constantly had Genos and Evolutionary abilities activated, sometimes more than one at a time, as they traveled from the east to west of southern Daen. They are the only member of the Strong Six to not have a happy ending, instead being lost to prophecies of doom for the Allorn Empire, and its fall from inside by beings sickly and grey in form with evil powers. Some have wondered if this is a coincidence or somehow, if the Avanthar knew the future centuries before others. They were also known as a healer in their time, and is seen as having passed down knowledge now used by the Cielothar.

Interactions and Customs

  • Avanthar culture has a strong association with touching skin and friendship. Physical skin to skin contact to Avanthar is very personal and is often only done for special reasons. In fact, Avanthar can become very aggressive to unwarranted or unapproved physical contact.
  • The Avanthar don’t formally have a concept of friendship, and what they consider friends are often somewhere in between what an Ailor would consider a friend and a lover. As such, Avanthar are very picky about who they consider their close compatriots, not even respecting their acquaintances enough to refer to them by their first name and simply referring to them as “Stranger” and then their name, such as “Stranger Mary” or “Stranger Tim”. Most Avanthar living in wider Aloria though have come to subdue, if not totally remove, this practice from their everyday lives.
  • Avanthar often cut their hair very closely on the sides, afterward shaving delicate patterns into them. On the top, they let their hair grow into messy mohawks, though recent Cielothar concoctions have allowed them to straighten their hair and create a more pointed and intimidating look. Females will sometimes allow this to trail down their backs, though it will never reach below their ribs.
  • Avanthar society uses facial hair (and in the case of women, their normal head of hair) to identify their importance in the social ladder. The highest leaders, chieftains and Elders, have three braids in their hair, while the “younger” Elders and major warriors have two braids. Regular Avanthar adults have one single braid in their hair, while non-adult Avanthar males have no braids. Males without facial hair among the Avanthar do not exist, though the ritual shaving of one's beard to deny them their power is a custom known to them.
  • The Avanthar frequently tattoo their own body in dagger-like patterns similar to those the Kathar use, though these patterns resemble flowing winds and clouds with sharp pointy ends more than actual sharp thorny compositions.
  • To the shame of their descendants, some Avanthar think it is a wise idea to welcome Eronidas traits into their gene pool, hoping they will be able to turn the green brute’s greatest weapon against them. Ironically, these horsemen are often cast out and later incorporated into Eronidas cities.
  • Avanthar also shun children born of “weak” Races which, of late, has meant Sihai, Dwarves, Isldar and Allar, all for various reasons. The one glaring exception to most are the Cielothar, though the Avanthar relationship with the Cielothar means that most Avanthar view themselves as bettering the Cielothar, and so making their own job easier, when they produce a child with that Race.
  • Due to the yearning for a stronger Nelfin Race, some Avanthar do not limit their standards for mates to just local Daen-based Ailor. Avanthar that leave their tribes often take interest in New Regalians and Velheim due to their strong military inclination, but have been known to travel to lands as far as Farah’deen seeking a partner of good Genos. The expected practice for the “Far-born” of these unions is for their Avanthar parent to deliver them to the home Band or home Tribe when they are 15 in order to undergo the customary education of all Avanthar.   • Avanthar don’t use wheels mainly because they are an “outsider” invention, but also because of the Altalar’s Wheel of Time concept. The Avanthar aren’t anywhere on it, much to their annoyance, despite 200+ years of conflict to keep both Eronidas and Kathar at bay, as well as Ailor encroachment. As a result, the Avanthar shun the use of the wheel in their society.
  • Avanthar do not use Magic, and see it as weakening the body. If one of their kind is discovered to be a Mage or a Sorcerer, they are usually excluded from the community on the account of “lacking faith” in their own form and in the power of the Avanthar people. However, some powerful battle mages have risen from Avanthar exiles in mercenary companies, suggesting that the Race is likely denying themselves a key asset out of nothing more than dogmatic tradition.

  • How Suel’lrodäd knew about and manipulated Genos is unknown, but since that material is connected with Arken power and Arken deals, some have assumed that the Suvial made a deal with an Arken to procure his “new Race”.
  • The Avanthar are often considered defeated in Regalian propaganda, with their dream of Nelfellim destroyed, but most believe that this narrative can only survive so long until the Avanthar test Regalia’s resolve again.
  • Wooly White Bison meat and hides are some of the most prized positions of any Avanthar, being seen as the ultimate trophies to take from a successful raid against an Eronidas settlement.
