The School of Knights is not a single Combat School, but rather a collection of Combat Schools that are all related to the Knightly Orders of the Regalian Empire. The concept of Chivalry and Knighthood is unique to the Ailor race, though in recent times, non-Ailor have increasingly been permitted to join various Orders. Still, a strong presence of racism and bigotry exists in the many Knightly Orders, some of which allow only a very strict niche group of people to be recruited into their organization. Every Knightly Order is a boarding school, meaning that students have to always be recruited at the age of 14 and graduate at the age of 24. Before the age of 24, these students are not ever allowed to leave the school though noble-connected school members often get around such restrictions by “long holidays”. Still, a noble family should be sure they want to send the child to their selected Knightly Order, as more than a few have been ruined by poor choice in Order or the child’s lack of knowledge on how to run a family upon their return.

Knightly Codes

Knightly Codes are books containing sets of rules specifically designed to protect the Honor of the individual and also the Order they serve. Each Knightly Code is a loose interpretation or view based on the original philosophies created by Yvrize Chattelois, the first Ithanian Knight who spoke of the Virtues of the Knight, the Hero of the Ailor people and the Champion of the Unionist cause. Knightly Codes are inflexible and dogmatic, outsiders renounce them as silly rules and the Knights of the various Orders worship them almost to the same sanctity as their own religious holy texts. Failure to comply to the Knightly Codes leads usually to expulsion and rejection by the Order, which has a number of nasty consequences. Once a Knight has been expelled, there is no way at all to ever return, even if the ejection was accidental or based on a misunderstanding. Knightly Codes are strict and unforgiving in their application.

Code of Charlemois

  • Honor is the highest virtue. Do not cheat, commit adultery, engage in dishonorable conduct, raise a weapon against the weak, old, poor, or sick.
  • Obedience to the Order is paramount. Do not speak ill of the Elders, the Code of Charlemois, or the policies set by the Primae of the Order.
  • The poor and the weak are the Order’s charge, the burden of the Knights. The poor and the weak must be protected, even from themselves if the need arises.
  • Strike down those who would foster ill Honor on the battlefield and beyond, for those who afface the virtue of Honor, have no right to bear themselves among Humanum.

Code of Ehren

  • Honor is the highest virtue. Do not cheat, commit adultery, engage in dishonorable conduct, raise a weapon against the weak, old, poor or sick.
  • Obedience to the Order is paramount. Do not speak ill of the Elders, the Code of Ehren, or the policies set by the Primae of the Order.
  • To turn the other cheek is the highest class. Do not strike back with vile words, do not demean, and do not belittle others.
  • To engage in self-effacement is the true sacrifice. Take no glory for one’s actions, seek no affirmation or pedestal, and reject all that is Gold and Silver.
  • Fraternity is the colossus of the Order. Speak frankly and honestly with your fellow knights and show no restraint in your feelings.

Code of Gosselle

  • To fear the judgement of the Spirit and to maintain his Synod is the paramount duty of the Knights. To disobey or fail the Synod is treason against the Spirit.
  • To speak a lie is to take the Spirit in the mouth and spit it out. To speak truth at all times is the natural state of all true Knights.
  • The Knights must make war on the infidels without cessation and without mercy, for the cleansing of non-Unionism can only be performed by the sword.
  • Each and every Knight shall be generous and give alms to the poor always, to go forth into the ill of repute and harlots and downtrodden, and to provide alms and food for the needy.

Code of de l’Homme

  • To do honor by your sword brother is paramount. To care for when he is sick, to shelter for when rain falls on him. To love when loneliness strikes the heart. Our bond is everlasting.
  • The honor of de l’Homme is to refuse unfairness, meanness and deceit, to refrain from speaking ill of anyone, and to return slander with words of kindness.
  • Every Knight must be bound to a liege lord, and remain faithful to their liege lord until released from duty or dissolved by the Primae. A Knight without a noble liege is like a Feathered Meadowfly drawn to a flame of contempt.

Code of Great Oak

  • The pursuit of glory is the highest need of the Knights of the Great Oak. A Knight must always ambition to greater purpose, and find cause during down time for great achievements such as hunts, jousts, patronage of the art, and to make all see and hear.
  • The Knights of the Great Oak are above religious identity, and should aim to treat all religions as equals before the Great Oak.
  • To challenge Knights of all other orders is the greatest pursuit of a test of mettle and strength. To deny a challenge from an equal is a sin against the Great Oak.

School of Viridian

The School of Viridian is commonly believed to be the oldest Knightly Order and therefore the grandfather of all other Orders. The School started during the rule of the first Emperor of Regalia, Theomar, but was rocked by controversy and even an attempt to overthrow the Empire’s rulers in 122 AC. Since then, the Order was strictly reformed time and time again to become what it is today. While the Viridian Order suffered numerous severe member losses during the Ranger Crisis, theAnahera Dictatorship and Lo Occupation, the Order still exists, albeit being one of the smallest Orders left. Viridian Knights are generally considered to be the most arrogant of the Knightly Orders, and they appeal to a high level of class and duty to validate this arrogance. Viridian Knights are frequent front line warriors in war, though the Primae carefully chooses which conflict to send the Knights into, and it is very obvious in their doctrine that the lives of the Knights are worth more than that of the levy soldiers. A Viridian Knight was once said to have commented that a Viridian Knight is worth as much as fifteen levy soldiers. While this was a statement taken out of context, it did underscore the fact that Viridians often allow levies to die as shock troopers before going to fight halfway the battle to take credit for the victory. As much as the Viridians are reviled by some of the other Knightly Orders for being a sham Order, their warriors are generally considered the trendsetters of Honor. The Viridian School has an extremely strict protocol on what they consider compliance to the Order’s code. Alongside the Honor code that a person would have to follow, they are additionally not allowed to engage in activities outside the Order. This means they are not allowed to be City Guards, Military army leaders, Noble title holders, or House guards or otherwise servants of any other organization or person than the Viridian Order. The Viridian Knights are represented by the colors white and green, and their emblem is the Feathered Dragon, though in recent times this symbol has largely been replaced with a tower.

School of Villiers-Eclaire

The School of Villiers-Eclaire is a school that is relatively new and based out of the island of Basta, in the Regalian Archipelago. The Villiers-Eclaire School was largely made to provide the Sancella of Unionism with a failsafe in case the more freely moving Halcyon Halberdiers would prove too disloyal to the Sancella, and also to counter the less religiously minded other Knightly Orders. The School of Villiers-Eclaire is largely funded and supported by the de Gosselin family, many of whose members are also high ranking Elders in the order. It should as such come as no surprise that many of the Villiers Knights serve in the de Gosselin’s personal retinue and military forces, and have accompanied Duke Florent I’s attempt to seize Ithania. Villiers Knights are generally considered the lapdogs of the Synod and the Ithanian-hating de Gosselins, and are often viewed by the other Orders with disgust because of their extremely political agenda. It is rare to see an important Synod member on Basta not somehow shadowed or flanked by a Villiers-Eclaire Knight for their protection, or acting as the enforcing hand of the less than clandestine tasks the Synod wishes them to perform. As long as the Villiers Knights honor their Code and stay loyal to the Synod, they have the so called Synodical Villiers seal, a piece of paperwork that grants their word extra weight as if blessed by the Synod of Unionism. Having been rejected from the Order either by violating the Code, or by being cast away by the Synod, this seal is revoked and the person no longer speaks with the weight of the Synod’s approval. They are represented by the colors teal and purple, and a two horned horse is their favored symbol.

School of d’Homme

The School of d’Homme is the physical manifestation of the Espirit d’Homme among the Ithanian men in the homeland where a strong and loving fraternal bond is used to enhance the battle effectiveness of the soldiers. The extreme kindness and care that the d’Homme Knights exercise is often overshadowed by the cultural condemnation and ridicule they receive from conservatives who are less than favorable to the same-sex relations that are not only encouraged, but the norm among the Knights. The School of d’Homme is the most laid-back school that has a fairly simple and straightforward Code, but also trains its members to be far less engaged in masculine behavior, or other social conduct that clouds righteous purpose and actions.The Espirit d’Homme is a strong cornerstone among the d’Homme Knights who, through years of training, are able to detach themselves from worry and boisterous behavior through fraternity and close bonding with other Knights. Their members are essentially immune to taunting, greed, arrogance and self aggrandizement, favoring kindness and fraternity, fostering strong reliable bonds with their fellow Knights to take their worries away. It is always said that a d’Homme Knight enters the battlefield cared for and loved, and without any fear of death or failure, but with serene contentment. They are unrivaled on the battlefield in their calmness, and are able to spend more time focusing intently on their training than getting distracted with pointless bravado. As soon as a Knight of d’Homme takes interest in a woman or scorns fondness of their fellow Knights, they become a pariah among their order for rejecting the Brotherhood and taking to other distractions. The d’Homme Knights are represented by the colors light blue and white, while their symbol is the azure swan.

School of Thousand Blades

The School of the Thousand Blades is actually misleading, because the Knights of the Thousand Blade Monastery don’t actually fight with swords, but with spiked flails. The Knights of the Thousand Blade Monastery aren’t actually from the Thousand Blade Monastery either, but from the adjacent Berthold’s Monastery in Axford, the capital city of Anglia. The Thousand Blade Monastery is a serene place meant only for Kades who retire from public life and add their sword to a large wall around the monastery made of swords, hence the name. Berthold’s Monastery adjacent to the Thousand Blade Monastery follows a similar principle, but is mostly for non-Kades, and its members also roam more freely around the Empire than to stay inside and confined. The Thousand Blade Monastery Knights are considered the strangest Knights among the Orders, because they have religious fanaticism that outcompetes even the Villiers Knights, yet are not tied to the Synod, but to House Kade instead. The Thousand Blade Monastery Knights can usually be recognized by the fact that they are either bald, or have severely short cropped hair, a Unionist eye tattoo or scar on their forehead, and lack of proper armor. The Thousand Blade Monastery Knights engage in self-flagellation during times where they feel they are lacking in purpose and duty, and otherwise show great zeal on the battlefield against infidels and non-believers with their spiked flail. Finally, the Thousand Blade Monastery Knights are also expected to never speak ill or think ill of House Kade, and to defend their honor in Regalia whenever they find any would do ill towards them. Failing to do so will also result in expulsion. They are represented by the colors black and blue, and their symbol is the spiked flail in black.

School of Great Oak

The School of the Great Oak is a little known Knightly school in Drixagh, founded by Calemberg dissenters who believed that the northern wilds should not be purged, but encouraged with elegance and a knightly code of honor, tempering the rage and uncontrolled vigor of the Velheimer people and the School of Skaggers into a more structured and organized society. Their answer to trying to lead by example was to create the Knightly Order of the Great Oak, a chapter house that finds its home in Drixagh, with small knightly champion lodges dotted in the territory and across the border into Hinter Calem. These lodges are frequently much smaller than the great lodges, and the Knights of the Great Oak are frequently ridiculed or cast out by the Skagger loyal population as being traitors to the free will of the Velheimers. Unfortunately, the Great Oak knights are also pariahs among the other Knightly Orders, who all believe that the Great Oak’s code of Honor is far too watered down, and betrays some core principles of the concept of Honor, a conscious decision taken by the first Knights of this Order to give it appeal to the Velheimer people and to fit within their culture.

Great Oak knights are the most well travelled Knights, who can frequently found all around the world doing their own thing, and generally lack a central oversight from a Knightly Commander or Council that sets them straight if they stray. Still, they have an unspoken agreement that the Great Oak Knights should never refuse a challenge when it is made to them, even if they know they should lose, for doing so will lose them Honor, and be cast out of their brotherhood. Knights of the Great Oak also fight without a shield, having a Skagger Axe in their offhand instead to allow for additional offensive capacity. The Knightly Order also strongly relies on hunting wild animals and dangerous prey, though also bounties set on people. The Knights have a strict no-cowardice principle, so anyone who refuses to duel when challenged, for whatever reason, is immediately expelled from the Knightly Order for being a coward, and will be barred for life. While losing the privilege of being able to enter the lodges of the Order, the ex-Knights soon lose the expertise and up-to-date tips they get from other Knights about how to track wild game and other dangerous beasts. The primary colors of Great Oak Knights are light blue and lime green.

School of the Lion Pelt

The School of the Lion Pelt is considered the heaviest armored and damage dealing Knightly Order, favoring the use of the Beorl Axe and removing the use of shielding aside from the heavy armor that is worn by the Lion Pelt Knights. Lion Pelt Knights are, unsurprisingly, easily recognized by the Ularen Lion’s pelt they wear, including a taxidermy head rested on the shoulder. The fur of the Lion Pelt is either dyed white or naturally white, combined with a white semi-cape and brilliantly polished armor. Lion Pelt Knights are often considered the most well dressed male Knights as they look both imposing and classy, even reminiscing the image conjured of Altalar Lancers of the Allorn Empire. Lion Pelt Knights don’t often go to war, or are present at major battlefields. Lion Pelt Knights follow the same code as the d’Homme Order, though put less emphasis on the Brotherhood complex of that Order, and more on the individual freedoms of who to serve. As such, Lion Pelt Knights can be found as bodyguards or Life Guards of important political figures and liege lords alike, not necessarily serving just nobility, but also wealthy clientele which coin to spare for their fearsome combat skills.

Lion Pelt Knights are also referred to as Gold-Ivory cloaks, referring to the Lion teeth, and the pockets full of gold these Knights earn for protecting their employer. Lion Pelt Knights return to their base of operations in Carrois du Lion in Brissiaud at least four times a year to train with the other Lion Pelt Knights and to exchange stories of their employment. Lion Pelt Knights are often seen as cold and distant to outsiders, but have a very warm Leutz-Vixe culture among themselves, even if they are sometimes as opposite ends of each other when their employers face off in combat. The Lion Pelt Order prizes itself greatly on diligence and the fervor in service, but also the wealth generated from being hired. As opposed to the honor principle other Orders worship with their Code, membership of the Lion Pelt Order comes with a mandatory fee that is paid during each great gathering of Lion Pelt Knights, as well as a monthly tithe. Failing to pay the quarterly fee and/or the monthly tithe because of, for example unemployment, results in the Knight being expelled from the Order. Lion Pelt Knights are represented by the colors white and silver.

School of Darkwald

The School of Darkwald is a relatively unknown and likely the smallest Order in existence in terms of members. Darkwald Knights rarely if ever actually leave their homeland of Tirgunn, a dark and forested island off the coastline of Opper Calemberg in the Regalian Archipelago. The Darkwald Knights are often mistaken for the Tirgunn Hunters, who serve much the same purpose, dress the same, but have a different fighting style and also operate alone, as opposed to the Hunters who hunt in packs. The Darkwald Knights are servants of the Synod, similar to the Villiers-Eclaire Knights, but the Darkwald Knights have a much more loose service to the Synod, and operate very independently without Synod oversight. Many of their practices are also not condoned by the Unionist Synod, or even legal in the laws of the Empire since they use torture and blackmail on innocent citizens to track down suspected Vampires, and have on occasion been known to slay suspected Vampires who turned out to not be Vampires at all.

To call them Vampire hunters is not quite accurate however. Darkwald Knights mostly fight against all things they consider evil and enemies of the Calem regions (which Tirgunn vigorously defends after their occupation for over 100 years by the Skagger Horde), which can sometimes also extend to Skagger Warriors, heretics, demon worshipers and other Voidborne scum. Darkwald Knights are often recognized in their lack of heavy armor, intensely dark brown leather robes and their tricorne hat, their signature accessory. They are usually shunned by other other Knightly Orders due to their brutal conduct and dishonorable beliefs, though surprisingly, they actually take the code of the Great Oak to heart. They just interpret the great beasts meant to be hunted as referring to the enemies of Calemberg. The enemies of Darkwald Knights includes: Ithanians, Velheim Skaggers, Vampires, Heretics, Heathens, Demons, Mages, Aberrants of any kind Witchblood, Silven, Arken and those accepting and loving of Magic. If they befriend or otherwise assist any of these individuals, or show sympathy towards them, they are expelled from their organization. The primary colors of Darkwald Knights are dark brown and black.

School of Pavisa

The School of Pavisa is a relatively new Order established in the Vultaro and Montania regions of the Archipelago. It is still officially a Knightly Order because they use a Code of Honor and use heavy armor, but are generally not really considered Knights on the battlefield because they use crossbows as their main weapons, not actual swords, even if they still wield a shield. Pavisa Knights have heavy armor, a medium crossbow and a large heater shield which is used to either stand behind while firing, or as a deflector. The crossbow frequently has a small spear tip mounted at the front so that it can also be used to thrust, though is also still heavy enough to simply bash with. Pavisa Knights, unlike other Orders, don’t specifically serve any purpose. They usually form so called Scutari Communes, which are like unofficial regional militias in Dressolini lands with the purpose of defending the major cities from engaging in Viscounty to Viscounty conflict. Dressolini lands, while very high in culture, frequently engage in small spats and skirmishes over often insignificant things, to the perspective of outsiders. Pavisa Knights often lead on the walls in the defense of these cities, or lead hunting parties in smaller ranged skirmishes in the countryside, even if these so called mock sieges and battles are only 10 men versus 10 men. Pavisa Knights barely have any presence on the battlefield, though have been known to act as military advisors during sieges on what not to do when assaulting a heavily fortified position full of archers. The Pavisa School has an extremely strict protocol to what they consider compliance to the Order’s code, and failing to adhere to the Code so would leads to expulsion. Recently, the School has been devastated with the regional takeover instituted by the Orc-aligned Ryker Lampero and competes with the School of Darkwald for having the fewest members. The Pavisa Knight’s primary color is lime green, supported with dark green, while their main symbol is obviously the Crossbow.

School of Bloodcast

The School of Bloodcast is a bit of an odd duck in the Knightly Orders, because it does not have an Honor Code. The Bloodcast Knights were a splinter movement created after the failed coup initiated by a few Viridian Knights. The first few Bloodcast Knights believed that the restricting code of Honor put on them was causing them to be suffocated in pomp and duty, and lowered their effectiveness and their charitable work among the poor. They were also disgusted with the splendour of the Viridian Knights, who were frequently known to sacrifice hordes of poor levies in battle for favorable positioning, to come out as the heroes for minimal effort. The Bloodcast Knights are looked down upon by practically every other Knight Order except the Darkwald Knights, as they are essentially hedge knights. The Bloodcast Knights have no restrictions and rules or even a centralized authority, and roam wherever they please to serve what they consider the greater good, which is usually justice, authority, charity, and kindness. Bloodcast Knights are called such because of their crimson capes, symbols of their Knighthood and a treasured and highly important piece of clothing for the Bloodcast Knights, even if they are mostly ceremonial and quickly removed during battle for strategy sake. Bloodcast Knights are the only order who have a relatively free choice of what to do in their lives, and roam the land seeking their own quests and rewards.

Because of this freedom however, Bloodcast Knights can often find themselves on opposing sides, or even committing acts of evil, only because they perceived the situation as different than it actually was. Bloodcast Knights never participate in tournaments or public parades or tests of skill between them and the other Knights, and much prefer to be out on the road like the Darkwald Knights. Bloodcast Knights take pride in their absence from the tests of skill among the other Knights. As such, any Knight of theirs that carousses with Knights from other orders by engaging in duels with them or joining Tournaments, quickly becomes an outcast and unwelcome to the Bloodcast Castle, where they would normally receive more up-to-date training on Longsword usage. While Bloodcast Knights are never formally expelled, getting caught socializing too much with the other Knightly Orders leads to pariah status, which is essentially the same as being expelled. Bloodcast Knights are only identified by the color red, which is most strongly visible in their cape, though their clothing may also feature patterns of red with white lining.

School of Matrais

The School of Matrais is an all-female Knightly Order that frequently gets made fun of by the all-male Orders, but in actuality has a lot of strong and capable female Knights that fight for the Empire and their homes. The Matrais Knights were founded by Charlize Matrais, who is lovingly called Matronelle among the Knights, or Matron. The Matrais Knights hone their skills with the greatsword, though for all the combat skills they gain, they still hold a strong regard for culture and style. This is partly what gets made fun of, their emphasis on dressing fashion; but the pursuit to have self-tailored robed of intricate patterns and designs is not some haute-couture whim of the female gender to look pleasing to the eye, but rather to tell a story. The Matrais Knights all know the basics of the Matrais weave, a concept of patterns both geometrical and organic that speak of the commendations, skills, and achievements of the Knight in person. They frequently wear sashes or capes or even battle dresses of fabrics that they have woven or tailored themselves with richly decorated thread and tassels. It is said that Mitrais Knights are the most obvious and colorful on the battlefield and this is often intentional. Mitrais Knights try to specifically draw the attention away from the poor levy soldiers so they can take the brunt of the enemy forces and spare the lives of their fellow soldiers.

Their bright colors and designs meant to taunt the often male-dominated armies of the opponents into a rage, much like a bullfighter. The bullfighting does not remain purely figurative however, as the Matrais Knights actually engage in bullfighting or dancing in their private time or for entertainment. They use equally beautifully crafted woven cloths of their own designs in the bullfighting ring, and wear exquisite outfits called Matta Dressage, arguably one of the few times when it is culturally acceptable for a woman to wear pants in Regalia. Matrais Knights are few, because many military women train elsewhere outside of the Empire to avoid the mockery Matrais Knights receive, though they certainly still have higher numbers than the Darkwald Knights. The Matrais Knights have no primary colors or symbols, because each Matrais Knight decides on their own codes or designs in dressing and styling. All Matrais Knights have their hair bound in a bun however, which is held by the Matrais comb, a golden comb with a lamb sleeping on a bed of swords which is granted to each Matrais Knight upon graduation.

School of Rangers

The School of Rangers has long been considered the black sheep of the Knightly Orders. Initially serving as an Order dedicated to scouting and skirmishing forces, the Order was raised to Knighthood by Alexander the Giant in 205 AC, serving at his behest. During this time and thereafter, the group would become somewhat renowned for their superior equipment and finely crafted blades, becoming a deadly, specialized unit on the field. While completing special operations under Alexander’s military expansion, the majority of their forces would be wiped out during the invasion of Nordskag in 223 AC. After this waste of resources and the death of Alexander the Giant, it was decided on that the remnants of the Order would surrender any internalized leadership and work directly on the behest of the Emperor. Since then the Order has been rather quiet as a whole, and this is due to the oddly individualistic nature of their members. The Order is even smaller than the currently weakened Viridians, but this has always been the case due to the staggeringly high casualty rate among its Knights. “Ranger Knights” are never referred to as such, unless one intends to mock its members. While Viridian Knights will allow shock troops to die by the hundreds before wading into battle, a Ranger is always compelled to fight at the Vanguard in tightly organized groups, and be the first to see combat. This isn’t done mindlessly, as Rangers sharpen their skills relentlessly to prepare for coming battles, often striking in small task forces or “Wings” to end an engagement early. Rangers tend to be egocentric and overly prideful, seeing themselves and their Order as humanity's best hope against the various evils that threaten the Regalian Empire. It is estimated that 50% of the graduates of the School of Rangers end up dying in battle, and this high death rate (coupled with their nonexistent, if not poor reputation of the Order), ensure that few nobles send their sons to this school, with only the brave or the foolhardy joining up in an effort to further humanity. Rangers tend to identify themselves by their blue and white colors, and will often make use of a cloak.
