The bizarre cousin of the rabbit, the Antelabbit is a carnivorous and terrifying creature that eats the living. Known for swarming in the spring, they will sometimes turn on each other if there is not enough food. This decimation of their own populace has made them a rare and terrifying sight to behold.

History

The first reliable recorded encounter between Antelabbits and another sentient race was in 10 AC. A large hunting group of Ailor in Ellador suddenly found themselves trapped out in a snowstorm while on their way back to their village. While close to the settlement, they decided to make camp in a nearby cluster of trees. During the night, the Antelabbits suddenly descended upon them. Swarming up from the earth, they tore the men and tents apart before feasting on their prize. The next day, several gatherers from the settlement came out, discovering the campsite. Instead of discovering their friends and family, they were greeted by a horrific scene. The Antelabbits were fighting amongst each other over whatever remained of their recently deceased loved ones. The gatherers slowly retreated away before returning to find the bodies of all parties gone entirely and no trace of any surviving Antelabbits.

Few scholars have dared to go out and study the Antelabbit since then. It is suspected that they are a Void mutated animal left over from the Fifth Void Invasion. The traditional area where they inhabit is a region called “The Plain of Death”. This area is avoided by many hunters and explorers because it of being the region where the Antelabbit lives. However, specimens have been collected during the wintertime when the animal hibernates. They are valued as items of exotic bizarreness by collectors. Currently, no one possesses a live specimen.

Physical Appearance

Reaching the size of a large cat when fully grown, Antelabbits are fully carnivorous. They have large, elongated, pointed ears and eyes that are solid black. Their fur ranges from warm light chocolate brown in the summer to dull gray and dirty white in the winter, though they range from black to white during the winter and from black to light fur colors in the summer. They have a large, fluffy tail. Their mouths when closed appear rather small, and with their giant buck teeth, the Antelabbit are almost comical in appearance. Upon opening their mouths, however, they reveal their buck teeth to be resting in front of rows of inward-pointing, razor sharp, needle-like teeth that force anything bitten or swallowed to be pulled into the throat. Bright pink gums give them a bloody appearance when howling and devouring their most recent prey. In front and slightly above their teeth is a large velvet-black “pseudo-nose”. This false “nose” sits above their actual nose (which cannot be seen) and is a hard, bony protuberance similar to a bird’s beak. This structure is used to break the bone of already dead prey and has two small nasal passages. Their forefeet have short, shovel-like claws with one large claw on each foot which they use to bore through the dirt with ease. Even wood, softer stones and metals have been known to be tunneled through with some effort. Their rear feet are powerful and good for leaping, though their main purpose is holding onto the inside of whatever hole is being used, which allows the Antelabbit to scurry back into its hole once it grabs hold of its prey.

Antelabbits have excellent legs for leaping, with the ability to jump high enough to attack an Orc’s face (or seven and a half feet). Their ambush tactics in the spring, as well as their deceptive exterior, are other prominent traits. Their tactics and quick reflexes are formidable forces on the battlefield. In addition, they appear as normal rabbits from a distance. However, a common tactic to distinguish them from their normal relatives is the Antelabbit’s solid black eyes. Their pelt’s ability to change color is also noted, yet scholars are unable to learn how this occurs.

Diversity

In terms of diversity, males and females appear identical on the exterior. In fact, some have questioned if the Antelabbits even have gender as the obvious internal twisting of their bodies could have been severe.

Life Span and Development

Antelabbits are born like normal rabbits, in large groups during the summer. Being born in clutches of six to ten kittens at a time, they mature on average after half a year and can live for up to ten years. Their teeth develop during this half year period and after their first year, their claws are fully developed. However, it has been noted that occasionally, Antelabbits eat their own young for possibly displayed weakness or because of a lack of other prey to hunt upon.

Mental Overview

No one can really understand the mind of an Antelabbit. Fierce and murderous, these rare predators do not seem to show any real thought process beyond day to day survival. They show a pack mentality in the swarms they form and how they place their holes in the same area. They have also been known to aggressively fight over food when food is scarce. To hunt, they hide motionless in their holes for hours in the summer months until prey moves by, whereupon they strike. They also have been observed grouping up on larger or more resistant prey.

Territory and Groupings

Antelabbits are divided into swarms, of which there are three known to exist in “The Plain of Death”. They move around every few years just before mating season. No swarm has ever met another and would never dare consider using the holes of another swarm. Each swarm is made up of a variety of female and male couples, and their underground dens. They are territorial, eating any foreign intruder found in their tunnels or on the surface of their area.

Trivia

  • The rabbit’s tail fur is used in articles of clothing amongst the elders and leaders of the Northerne Balltarc people. This is because they are extremely soft and downy.
  • The ears and feet of Antelabbits are considered by many Ur and Thylan alike to be ultimate symbols of the hunt.
  • There is a myth told to children in the northern regions of the Regalian Archipelago of three powerful knights who all came upon an Antelabbit in a forest. One tried to gently remove the animal and was eaten. The second tried to trick the animal and was eaten. The third ran it through in a mad rush forward, defeating it by sheer luck.
