Djew Sheney was once widely spread across the surface of the Ashal Islands, its growth unmitigated, and it was readily available and widely domesticated. However, with the fall of the Dewamenet Empire, the centuries of isolation left the growth on the isles unchecked, allowing more invasive species to overtake and vastly reduce its growth. Now, it has become a relict crop that seems only able to grow safely near the Living Metal tubes of the Ashal Isles, though with the recent efforts of the Asha, it has slowly begun to reach its former point.
History
Although stories from the Dewamenet Empire are hard to come by, and harder yet are the tales of the Asha before the Empire, the Djew Sheney has remained a consistent part in the lives of the Asha. Even before the Empire was founded, the Asha would collect and eat Djew Sheney, ensuring to harvest the seed heads before they were ripe to not let them shatter. Gradually, the domestication of the plant occurred, slowly changing the grain in the process as to not immediately disperse its seeds upon ripening. It was steadily used for both bread and beer, providing a small portion of grains for the Asha’s otherwise carnivorous diet. The processing of this grain only grew the legend of the Khem-Henqet mills, the Living Metal facility unmatched by any other civilization at the time.
When the Allorn Empire invaded and began to enslave the Dewamenet, part of their efforts to attempt to starve out the survivors was to remove any potential sources of food for those that managed to hide. Althoughthey had a general idea of their diet, they were unaware to the extent at which the Asha almost exclusively ate meat, and chose to direct a wider portion of their efforts toward the wide scale burning and eradication of Djew Sheney. This particular event was part of where the name for Djew Sheney arose in prominence, the concept that such a crop could survive a concerted effort to eliminate it from existence gave credence to the idea that it could grow anywhere, and survive any manner of trial.
With the recent reemergence of the Asha into the Ashal Islands, the steady cultivation of Djew Sheney has begun yet again. Gradually, the grain is being steadily increased, and the familiar days in which the Khem-Henqet mills processed the grain day and night is surely on the horizon.
Appearance
Djew Sheney is a type of bristled wheat that often grows to a height of three to four feet when grown in the wild, with the height tending to be higher on the domesticated side. The plant has a thin stalk that reaches toward a spiked tip of around twenty to thirty heads, each head holding a few dozen seeds. The bristles toward the edge would slowly lengthen and straighten out during the evening, though at the coming of night they would slacked, slowly stretching out. This particular oddity allowed for the self propagation of the plant when the seed head would in fact fall from the grain itself. The entire grain holds a yellowish gray color, and when the seedheads open, the insides appear to be a stark white, giving an appearance similar to a snow capped mountain.
Uses and Abilities
Djew Sheney serves as one of the primary grains used by the Asha for their alcohol as well as bread. Ultimately, it holds no particularly unique taste, but instead when made into a flatbread, it is often very absorbent, allowing for it to soak up any leftover remnants of food.
Trivia
- There are tales in the past that at the height of the Dewamenet Empire, the Asha had managed to grow Djew Sheney to the height of around six to eight feet regularly.
- Although the crop was once grown almost everywhere across the Ashal Isles, it only managed to remain near the Living Metal tubes, for what reason this crop seemed to be safe there, no one has quite discovered why.
