A staple in Farah’deen and Daendroqean cooking, the Dragonflower has wormed its way to fame both for its practical use in the common kitchen, and its stunning appearance. What started as a mere oasis flower has become an iconic spice among many, along as a beloved prize-garden gem.
History
The Dragonflower was first discovered by a lost Qadir spice merchant, who was unfortunate enough to take a wrong turn, leaving him to be lost in the seemingly never ending desert, out of water. It was only luck that he stumbled upon a small oasis, with the Dragonflower growing along the banks of the water. Taken aback by the flower’s striking colors, the merchant uprooted one of the plants to take along with him. Upon discovering a nearby village, the man was able to take a closer look at the plant. He found that the flower was a potent spice, as after handling the plant’s roots, the merchant rubbed his eyes only to find they burned; a trait of hot peppers and plants. By crushing the roots, it was found a spice could be produced, perfect to use for cooking. Word spread, and so did the plant, reaching the Holy city of Regalia. From there, the plant traded across Aloria, but out of all places, Daendroque took to the plant the best. With perfect conditions from growth, the flower spread rapidly and the spice it produces went on to become a staple in Daendroqean dishes. Daendroquenas named it the Dragonflower due to it’s bright color which resembles the magic of Dragon’s fire, it’s wing-like leaves, and the more than flaming spice it produces.
Appearance
The Dragonflower is a five petaled flower, with a long, thin stem that has a slight droop due to the weight of the flower it holds. The flower can grow to have a diameter of about two inches on average, though it has been recorded to grow up to four inches across given the right conditions. The color of the plant can vary from light orange-yellows, to a deep and rich scarlet. It is not uncommon for a single plant to have flowers of various shades growing on it. The leaves of the plant are the most peculiar, vaguely resembling a dragon’s wings, and they have slight spikes that give a small prick to whoever grabs at them. The roots, likely the most crucial part of the plant, grow like curled up snakes, and when freshly picked have a slight slimy texture, giving rise to the name ‘Serpent’s flower.”
Uses and Abilities
The Dragonflower is primarily used for cooking, though it does have some minor uses that are not as commonly found. The flower is sometimes crushed to produce a brilliant scarlet dye, often used in dying clothes. It’s tasking to make as it requires a large amount of the flowers, and typically sells for a large amount of coin. The most common use of the flower is in the production of a potent spice. Easy to make, the spice is sold for a low price in sharp contrast to the dye the flower can create. Often, even the lower class families have a bottle of the spice, and given how a small pinch to a dish could warm one up from the inside out, it proves to be cost-effective.

The Dragonflower, Drakon Pansy, or Lis de Flamme in D’Ithanie, is a flower held in some noble households because they find its colors, which are a golden orange to sunset red, appealing. It is regarded as being useful to travelers at night in the Farah’deen, when it gets cold, as it emits a shimmering wave of heat at night, the energy of which it had gathered from the sun during the day.
Origins
Dragonflower was originally discovered by the Meshket Qadir, who used it to keep warm during nighttime. Its beauty was then discovered by Ithanian seafarers who had found it on a Qadir pirating ship which had tried to raid them. It spread to the nobles, becoming known for its beauty, and some Etosian merchants were able to obtain some for decoration. Many Theodoran and Ithanian nobles grow it, but most still grows in the deserts. A few spice merchants also grow small bunches of this plant, as when the roots are crushed, it creates an extremely hot spice. The flower has not adapted from the time when it was discovered, since it had not been found until it had evolved to the point at which it was able to thrive and disperse throughout Farah’deen. It are these qualities that allow it to survive almost anywhere.
Etymology
The plant’s name in Common and Theodora was inspired by the dragons, as it emits heat like them. The name was influenced by Ithanian culture as well. The Etosians call it the Drakon Pansy, while a family of Ithanian nobles, known as the House De Flamme, gave the flower a name similar to their own.
Primary Use
The Dragonflower has a quantity of uses. It’s roots have been found to perform well as a spice and is useful in keeping Qadir travellers warm during cold nights in the desert. Its main use is for decoration for many noble estates and manors, as it is quite expensive to import due to the fact that it needs sunlight every day which is not easily accessible on the ships that carry it . Some spice merchants go to great expense to procure these plants, as the spice itself sells for much more than the plant, since those who have acquired the flowers to make the spice are quite rare to find.
*The roots, when crushed, create a orange-ish red spice so hot that it causes dehydration. This spice is widely popular among a few groups of people, who will pay quite a sum of money for it.
*A Qadir merchant, while traveling, picked a few of these flowers along the side of a path he was following. When he accidentally crushed the roots in his pack, the juices spread over some food he had. Upon eating said food, he realized that the roots added a delectable spice to the concoction. Those who eat the spice only eat a pinch at a time, otherwise it would be to much to handle.
*A Maiar who consumes the spice would have an overwhelming desire for water almost immediately, however it would not die from these circumstances.
*The roots must be crushed into a fine powder in order for them to work as intended. The crushing releases energy stored within the roots that came from the sunlight. If one would not follow this important step in preparing the root for consumption, the product would be intensely hot. Forgetting this step has lent to many burnt tongues as a result.
Trivia
Trivia
*One particular spice merchant tried consuming different parts of the flower, burning his tongue and discovering that the bloom itself can become quite hot, not in the spicy way either.
*A myth was started that the Dragonflower came into existence when a dragon blew fire onto the land, and where the flame touched, the flowers would spring up and flourish.

*In large enough doses, the spice produced by the Dragonflower can inflict burns to a person’s mouth and throat, just like an actual flame. It became a challenge among Qadir children to see how much one could take before tearing up from the pain.

|appearance = Dragonflower is connected at the base, usually splitting off into five thin, two-inch petals, these petals are golden-yellow to scarlet. There is a short green stem connecting to a leafy clump where the stems of several flowers converge. The roots are a pale off-white color.
|habitat    = Dragonflower is naturally found in the several oases dotting the Farah’deen, where it grows in patches of sunlight. It is often moved as all it requires is some dirt to grow in, and sunlight to draw energy from, This water is mainly just stored in the leaves, which are the only part of the plant that actively require a noticeable amount of water. It can be found in several Ithanian gardens, as well as some Etosian. It has recently also begun to become popular in Regalia itself, both as a spice and as a decoration.
