As the new Chancellor worked to get disloyal, non-rebellious states to return to paying their taxes, Drixagh rebels continued to make gains along the border with Calemberg. The Herebrand Order continued to be pushed back by the much larger rebel host, before being placed under siege at the Mariënforz Castle, unable to leave. House Viduggla meanwhile succeeded in getting the [[Krainivaya]] Hetmans to join in the rebellion, and together the rebels pushed back against the New Regalians north of Hadrian’s Wall, succeeding in pushing the Calembergs behind their new fortification. At the same time, Viduggla also used their still-technical position as a financial director to move 30,000 Regals worth of funds from the State’s regional bank to their personal coffers, before resigning the office. However, the most significant action came from an operation in the capital. The previous Chancellor had moored sulfur ships in the capital in an attempt to use them as fire ships against the Anahera rebels but failed to capitalize on them. This allowed several ships sailing colors of the [[House Fristadvlom]] to move into the harbor, seize the sulfur, and sail back to Drixagh, where they were given to House Viduggla. This seizure of sulfur was all that was needed for Viduggla to create gunpowder explosions, which were set along Hadrian’s Wall in the middle of the night, detonated the next day, and exposed Calemberg to a Drixagh invasion force.

The Drixagh Rebellion of late 307 AC was a culmination of cultural tensions, historical animosity, and political missteps from the Regalian State. Instigated by continued attempts to remove Drixagh ways of life, and provoked by military actions by the Herebrand Order, the Rebellion’s start saw a vast majority of Drixagh break off from the Regalian Empire, united against southern aggression. Unlike previous revolts, the Drixaghers maintained the upper end, and geopolitics forced the Regalian State to seek a pragmatic peace settlement to bring the north back into the fold of the Archipelago. Despite it only being a recent occurrence, the Drixagh Rebellion is considered to be a critical point to the various northern cultures and serves as the second time in Regalian history where a rebellion truly succeeded in getting their way with the Regalian State.

Background Information

Since before the Skagger Wars, conflicts between the various Drixagh Ailor groups and their southern neighbors have been frequent. The Wirtemcaller Kingdom frequently waged military campaigns against the north, and at one time managed to subjugate the Zvorun under the predecessors of the Herebrand Knights. A century later, the Skagger Horde of the Velheim brought the Wirtemcaller Kingdom to an end, only to be met by the successor realms of Greater Calemberg. For over two centuries, both Drixagh and Calemberg could never see eye to eye, with each side holding strong to their cultural traditions. At the turn of the Third Century AC, these border conflicts brewed into the Battle of Calemberg and the Burning of the North, both events affecting the Wirtem and Velheim respectively. While the Regalian State desired to keep peace in the Regalian Archipelago, it was clear by the political rhetoric that many favored the Imperialization of the “barbarian raiders.” With their cultural beliefs constantly berated on by multiple factions coupled with military attempts at bringing them to heel, it was only a matter of time until Drixagh had enough.

History

The Winter of Malcontent

Following the conclusion of the Dread War, the Regalian Government was now faced with a demobilization of the war front, coupled with repaying war debts to lenders for funding the military. Coupled with recent strife from the Girobalda region over-taxation rights, the State was currently treading on thin ice with the states of the Empire and needed to act decisively in order to settle matters. What ultimately transpired, however, was to bring the Empire to the breaking point.

The first cracks in the government were shown in the Altalar Principalities. After waiting a month for the State to send a delegation to negotiate the entrance of the Successor Principalities into the Regalian Empire, the Altalar eventually closed the diplomatic channel after receiving the cold shoulder from the Regalian Government. This action coupled with other delays in the government ultimately led to the Baldmark to cease paying their mandatory taxes to the Regalian State, denouncing the government as being apathetic to the needs of the Empire. This would soon see parts of Osteiermark refuse to pay taxes as well, echoing the statements of the Baldmark. Next, the Anahera Cabal in Girobalda followed suit, but also called for the Lord Chancellor at the time, Amelina Peirgarten, to be declared impotent, and to be placed under her Daendroque consort to act as her Regent. This culminated in Anglians and Breizh regions of the Archipelago to also cut off their taxes to the State, causing a weekly 50,000 Regal deficit, with the potential for total economic collapse of the Empire if the situation was not addressed immediately.

As more states continued to lose support in the State, Drixagh also began to feel isolated in their ways. During the waning of government support, Mercenary companies in the Verreland conducted attacks on Ailor Pagans in the region, preventing their arrival but consequently sending a message to the North that Regalia does not care for their ways. This belief was only further emphasized when the Herebrand Order preemptively attacked the Zvorunn Ailor of Zavoria, having been tipped off by the Celate of Regalia who intercepted a letter from the Velheim House Zastorzy that Drixagh was mobilizing to defend against the State. However, the tipping point came in the Lord Chancellor’s granting of a carte-blanc to House Lampero, who was free to invade any non-tax-paying state without any repercussions of State involvement. The consequences of this ultimately led to three things: first, Lampero forces immediately invaded the Anahera lands to their west which caused Girobalda to declare libertatem-quin-caesar, a term to declare rebellion against the Regalian Government, but not the Emperor Himself; secondly, the Baldmark declared open rebellion as well, though ultimately boiled into their own inter-ethnic struggles; but the most significant action came from the North. With the carte-blanc issued by the Chancellor alongside the Herebrand invasion, Drixagh was convinced that the State was out to annihilate them once and for all. This gave most of the region all the reason they needed to declare open rebellion against the Empire and Emperor and called upon House Viduggla to join them in this war, which they did so against the State.

The Opening Skirmishes

The first phase of the Rebellion continued to see further escalation from neutral regions. A few weeks before the rebellion was declared, House Viduggla had succeeded in placing a local baron in charge of the Groswald Commune, a small section of Drixagh formerly under House Typhonus protection following the previous border skirmishes against several Drixagh families near Hadrian’s Wall. This usurpation of their protectorate led to the Typhonus family, with additional backing from House Reinard, to lead a force of 20,000 troops over the wall to overthrow the Groswald baron and reassert control. However, the military action ultimately caused Grosswald to enter the league with House Viduggla and the Drixagh rebels, who soon sent 40,000 rebel forces to the region, pushing the Typhonus-Reinard host back into Calemberg in a series of short battles. At the same time, the Herebrand Knights in their preemptive fight, are also pushed back to the province of Valderburgh, outnumbered by the much larger and motivated Drixagh host.

Back in the capital, House Viduggla leaks information pertaining to letters between House Lampero and the Regalian State in regard to using chemical and biological warfare against the rebellious states in the Archipelago. The Iron Duke, Ryker Lampero, revealed that the letters were valid and confirmed the Chancellor signed off on the plan, though claimed to have no part in it and declared the entire plan dishonorable. The immediate consequence of this revelation was found in the Imperial Palace, where Emperor Alexander I was reported to have flown into an uncharacteristic lack of composure, before sacking the entire Regalian Government. After calling for emergency applicants, the Emperor eventually appointed Lord Louis Delmotte to the Chancellery with heavy support by the nobility. However, even with a new Chancellor at the helm, the Drixagh Rebellion continued to wage on.

Northern Storms

As the new Chancellor worked to get disloyal, non-rebellious states to return to paying their taxes, Drixagh rebels continued to make gains along the border with Calemberg. The Herebrand Order continued to be pushed back by the much larger rebel host, before being placed under siege at the Mariënforz Castle, unable to leave. House Viduggla meanwhile succeeded in getting the Krainivaya Hetmans to join in the rebellion, and together the rebels pushed back against the Wirtem north of Hadrian’s Wall, succeeding in pushing the Calembergs behind their new fortification. This allowed several ships sailing colors of the House Fristadvlom to move into the harbor, seize the sulfur, and sail back to Drixagh, where they were given to House Viduggla. This seizure of sulfur was all that was needed for Viduggla to create gunpowder explosions, which were set along Hadrian’s Wall in the middle of the night, detonated the next day, and exposed Calemberg to a Drixagh invasion force.

Border Assaults

With Hadrian’s Wall compromised, House Typhonus ordered civilian retreats from the border towns, causing a mass exodus to the safety of the southern provinces. With further troops mobilized in defense of Calemberg, The Drixagh hosts moved across the border, defeating the Wirtem in the field due to overwhelming numbers. The Zastorzy-led army besieging the Herebrand Order eventually lifted the assault, and permitted the knights to retreat into Ostermark, abandoning their holdings that were controlled for centuries.

At the same time, the Chancellor attempted to call for an armistice, though was ignored due to other noble houses in the Archipelago raising banners due to the holy war being declared by the Unionist faith. Private navies sailed to Drixagh’s western coastline, where the main navy of house Avalorn succeeded in blockading the rebels from that side. After a week of movements, the Chancellor sent a provisional peace offer to the Drixagh rebels, which coupled with the retraction of the holy war declaration allowed for an armistice to be reached. Following a brief hostage exchange with one of the Zastorzy brothers and the Chancellor’s daughter, negotiations were carried out in the capital, allowing the rebellion to come to an end.

Effects

The treaty of the Drixagh Rebellion saw several long-term changes take place within the Regalian Empire. House Fristadvlom and the Herebrand Order were relocated to Girobalda, which had also ended their rebellion with the state facing Lampero pressure. Taxation from Drixagh was returned to normalcy, and all future income generated from the reason was appropriated for soldier wages, infrastructure, and commerce, with nothing serving as a detriment to Drixagh’s culture, faith, and customs. To help with that point, a Northern Development Fund was created, in which 10,000 Regals a week was allocated towards, controlled by a Velheim to spend on local developments of the region.

One of the more unique points of the treaty was Hadrian’s Wall being turned into an impassable mountain. While the average Regalian found the point outlandish, it soon proved genuine. Following the signing of the treaty, a Dragon flew across the fortification, causing the ground beneath to rise up, creating a sharp mountain range spanning the entire border between Calemberg and Drixagh. After over three centuries of constant border disputes, a geographic barrier now separated the ancestral adversaries from one another, and for the moment has ensured peace on the border.

Finally, the treaty saw lasting effects on House Viduggla, who was ultimately ignored in the negotiations for the benefits of all other parties. As all other forces pulled back their forces, only the Vidugga host remained in rebellion with the State. This prompted the head of the household to enter their own negotiations with the state, which ultimately led to over 100,000 Regals paid in reparations, the destruction of the Viduggla shipyards, and a local stipulation that Viduggla could only commission new ships with the State’s sole permission.

On the larger scale of Regalian history, the Drixagh Rebellion was considered to be the second revolt against the Regalian Empire that ended in success for the rebellious forces, only preceded by the Drachenwald Crisis several decades earlier. While some contemporaries have expressed concerns in the pardoning of traitors, others have remarked that the Rebellion only succeeded due to the Archipelago’s weakened state at the time, forcing the State to make concessions they otherwise would not have considered. For the Drixaghers however, the rebellion was a sign of long-awaited changes to their lands. With the Calmbergers expelled from the North, the local cultures could finally begin forging a new chapter of their histories, no longer worried that the aggressiveness of the southerners would assail them again.
