Official Name: Firegrass.
Common Name: N/A.
Classification: Shrub, grass.
Common Use: Tinder.
Habitat: Temperate Forests.
Origins: Ithania.

Firegrass, much like its cousin Fireweed, is a vibrantly coloured plant that comes in shades of red; it is found throughout Ithania. Firegrass is both smaller and less dangerous than its weed cousin. This brightly coloured plant is much more plentiful due to its higher number of lightweight seeds that catch the updrafts caused by the large fires started by fully matured Firegrass . This grass is both useful to those in the wild and deadly to those who live in settlements. It is perfect for kindling but due to its ability to combust, it is deadly to wooden structures.

Origins

Firegrass originated in the land of Ithania, found mainly in the more arid areas, but the plant can be found throughout the continent in open fields and forest clearings. Due to its vibrant colours of scarlet and crimson and long wispy blades, it is easy to spot. The grass tends to grow together, spreading itself out further and further, mainly by killing off plants around it. This is done by its ability to combust and start fires that can get out of hand quickly. These fires help it spread because it creates room for it to grow, as well as release its seeds. The fires caused by the plant were thought to be the work of arsonists or mages. This led to many misunderstandings as people were prosecuted when these fires damaged villages and other settlements. It was not until 156 B.C. that research of the plant and its connection with the fires was performed and the plant’s abilities were discovered.

Etymology

Firegrass obtained its name due to the combustions that the plant creates when the chemicals inside it are dried up. But before firegrass was fully studied it was only seen as a vibrant rust coloured grass, so it was originally called bloodgrass. This name held to the plant until the research was held in 156 B.C. where its incendiary nature was discovered and its name changed to firegrass to be more suitable.

Primary Use

Firegrass’ primary use is to create a fire through combustion. This can be used in a plethora of situations due to the utility of fire. It is a great form of tinder because it only takes a small flame to set this grass alight and thus creating a much larger fire. It is also used in fires that are already burning to add flashes of heat, this is important in forges and cooking fires when different levels of heat are needed.

  • Firegrass’ main and primary use is as tinder. Due to its flammability it is perfectly suited for starting small fires quickly. It works best being placed underneath heavier wood and being set alight, causing the fire to grow hotter due to the ignition of the chemicals within the plant. Firegrass is also used commonly in forges, due to it able to be added into the fires to cause intense flashes of heat that allows smiths to easily handle the metals they work with.
  • This effect was discovered in 156 B.C. shortly after the plant’s ability was discovered. Alchemists and herbalists began to put the plant to use, experimenting with it in a variety of ways; boiling it, grinding it to dust and compressing it to release the chemicals within it. Throughout these tests, the only use that was brought out from the plant was creating fire easily. This was done when it was dried and exposed to an open flame; the open flame is normally in the form of a spark, the spark causes it to catch alight quickly and almost explosively.
  • Due to the Firegrass’ nature, it has no special affiliation with any race or cursed individual.
  • To have Firegrass perform the chemical reaction in which it got its name from, the plant needs to be dried, whether it be heat to evaporate the liquids inside the plant or exposure to an open flame.
Name Appearance Habitat
Firegrass Firegrass grows in tall strands, its long wispy blades vary in colours; largely in the shades of red and orange. But yellows and brown are seen when the plant is getting close to combustion. Firegrass can be found throughout Ithania, mainly near the deserts of the continent. But can be sought out in most forests, mainly in the clearings so that they can absorb as much light from the sun as possible.
