The Ghor Ka Bloodscales can be best described as small lizard men with brilliant crimson scales, standing at a meager four to four and a half feet. Their heads are reptilian with bulbous eyes that possess a fused eyelid allowing for pinhole vision. These peculiar eyes are also capable of moving entirely independently from each other. A bony ridge runs along the center of their skull. They also have a tail that reaches back behind their body and can be moved about, most often seen when they are in the water and quickly moves it for momentum. Bloodscales are mostly bipedal and have strong hind legs to support their weight. To run faster, they will often drop to crawl on all fours while relying on their sharp teeth for attacking. Each limb has four webbed fingers with small claws on the fingertips which assist them in swimming. Their underbellies are cream colored and are much smoother than their backs.

The Ghor Ka Bloodscale are a strange race of animalistic lizardmen that fall behind the line of an intelligent race. Most likely a failure of Al-Allar alchemical manipulation of their own race long ago, these creatures now live in the wilds in tribes made up of their family. They’re known not only for their creation of simple tools but also for their ability to be turned into simple servants in the halls of Digmaan and other wealthy Allar. Fiercely territorial, anyone who crosses into their land will be quickly be met with an assault of stones and teeth.

History

The exact origins of the Ghor Ka Bloodscales are largely unknown, but a widely accepted theory is that they are the unfortunate result of Al-Allar alchemy on another caste of Allar. The Ghor Ka Bloodscale is believed to have originated in Sendras during the Sendrassian Civil War, though there are very few written records of this period. The first true records of these creatures originate in 23 BC from the Allar who fled Sendras and landed in Hadar. The native Slizzar of Hadar confirm this, and their few records state that the Ghor Ka Bloodscales were transported in the holds of Allar ships like cattle. After the long voyage, the Ghor Ka Bloodscales were restless, and many of them quickly escaped their cages and fled into the wild. While the Ghor Ka Bloodscales originally traveled with the Allar as servant creatures, the majority of the population now exist as tribal packs along the coastlines of Hadaria with a minority of them kept as the property of Allar and Slizzar. During the events of the Chrysant War, their resemblance to Allar paired with their homes along coastal waters proved disastrous for the Ghor Ka Bloodscales, whose numbers took a dramatic drop during the Regalian invasion and is still struggling to recover. Another issue is the pollution of waters due to alchemical warfare did drive a sizable portion inland, though smaller tribes still manage to survive on the coast. The remaining populations residing in the wild are often hunted for sport by wealthy Ailor on vacation for their bright red scales. As such, the skin of the Ghor Ka Bloodscales has become a valuable export from Hadaria in recent years. However, in recent years it has also been revealed that some Ghor Ka Bloodscales remain on Sendrass, though they are rare to see and located in and around the coastlines of Solangeria.

Diversity

Groups of Ghor Ka in any particular region have been seen to show off the same patterning on their stomachs and backs. Those that live deeper in the jungles have lighter underbellies and darker scales, while those closer to the coast have darker underbellies. Males and females are in equal numbers across the south of Aloria and have virtually no sexual dimorphism appearance wise.

Lifespan and Development

Ghor Ka Bloodscales are born in clutches of four or five eggs close to sources of water. The brown eggs, speckled with red blotches, hatch after four to five months. Mothers will protect the eggs only until the eggs hatch, at which point the children must learn to fend for themselves within their tribe. The hatchlings must then survive the wilderness; because their scales are soft at this time, they are very vulnerable to the dangers of the wild. Most Ghor Ka take up to a year or more before they grow to at least a foot tall in their “teenage” period. They then reach full size at around year three in their life. They can mate at age two and are thought to live for up to 15 years in the wild. Unfortunately, they do not make it past ten if held in captivity.

Mental Overview

Ghor Ka Bloodscales are in a curious position of being much smarter than the majority of animals of Aloria, but lacking the intelligence of any of the accepted races of the world. Feats of their limited intelligence include the creation and use of flint tools, ability to count to ten, a language consisting of different gurgling sounds, the creation of primitive clothing from animal skins, and a writing system of eight different characters. In captivity, Ghor Ka Bloodscales are often trained to do simple tasks like sweeping a floor or carrying a tray of food. However, they often retain a wild nature and must be shown acts of force to keep them in line. Despite regular attempts, it is clear that they are unable to speak any other known languages or remember names. While these creatures can be made docile, they are naturally quite violent to outsiders and are known to bite and claw at things they do not understand. This makes stumbling upon a pack of them a hazardous situation to those not prepared for their animal-like ferocity.

Territory and Groupings

Both males and females mark territory along rivers and the coastlines with pheromones specific to their genetic family. Ghor Ka Bloodscales live in groups of ten to thirty consisting of their extended family exclusively by rivers and on the coast, though with the majority of the population surviving inland. Their small territories are often quite easy to see as they are dotted with underground burrows, often very disorganized. Ghor Ka Bloodscales are known to be fiercely territorial to the point where trespassing on their land will cause the entire family to rally and attack until the trespasser fleas or dies. Skirmishes between families are commonplace, though the borders of territories often remain the same. Ghor Ka Bloodscales often live sedentary lives, only leaving their homes at risk of their own lives. It is common for the burrows they live in to become graves as they will struggle to return home to die.

Trivia

  • One of the most intelligent Ghor Ka Bloodscales ever known to exist was named “Nestor” and was kept in the Imperial Menagerie of Regalia until it died at the age of twelve. A gift to Emperor Justinian II after the Chrysant War, Nestor could juggle three balls while balancing himself on a forearm. It also had a knack for escaping in its youth, getting out of three separate cages before age tempered him.
  • Ghor Ka Bloodscales are known to have a perpetually grumpy face to fit their attitudes. One thing that makes them laugh is seeing others in harm.
  • The task of capturing and training Ghor Ka Blooldcales in an expensive one. As such, domesticated Bloodscales are usually only found as pets to wealthy Cro-Allar Digmaan.
