|Official Name||Green Lizard|
|Common Nicknames||Common Greenscale, Verte Reptile|
|Habitat||Hadaria, Daen, Corontium|
The Green Lizard is possibly the most common quadruped animal in Aloria, existing across multiple continents. It is a small green reptile but also known for the streaks of blue and red that mark males and females apart. It is a rare example of a domesticated lizard, kept as pets by some Allar and Ailor. It has been present throughout many world events, yet remains alive and unaffected today.
The Green Lizard began their existence on Hadaria over a thousand years ago, peacefully sunning themselves on rocks while the Slizzar around them plotted and schemed in the name of their Nessrassian Gods. They were occasionally hunted, but this was never a large-scale movement as they apparnetly do not "smell nice" to Slizzar, who prefer more fragrant foods. When the Altalar arrived in the region, they brought the Green Lizard back with them to Daen, sometimes knowingly as experiment subjects or possible pets or unknowingly in the bowels of their great cargo vessels and slaving galleys. The animal became a common sight within the next 200 years on the diverse continent, and for several more centuries, it remained between these two regions. It eventually made the jump to Corontium as they had before, hidden in the bowels of slaving and cargo ships. By the Cataclysm, the animal was well established on all of these continents and was able to weather the adverse effects the event had on their coastal and aquatic-based homes. In the three centuries since then, the animal has been domesticated and can now be found in most pet stores, but also remains in the wild in large populations. In some rural regions of Aloria, like the Minor Nations and States of Corontium, the animal is also eaten as a meal due to their relative abundance. It is unlikely anything could seriously affect this unimportant yet widespread lizard in the coming years.
The Green Lizard is the “standard” one might think of in Aloria when imagining a lizard. It is between one and a half to two feet long, with a light weight of two pounds. Their heads are large but have a narrow snout, with a set of small teeth made mainly for consuming insects and fruit. The top of their heads are flat, only punctuated by two bumps over their small eyes which can be green or brown in coloration. At the back of its head sit its set of tympanic membranes, colored an off-black. Their necks are thick, the same size as the base of the head and connect it to a similarly thick body. They are supported by four legs, the front set possessing five short fingers and claws while the rear set has five long fingers and claws. The body ends in a long pointed tail. The Green Lizard is covered in, as one should expect, green scales though there is a smaller tone of brown to the backside of the animal to help it hide itself. Its underbelly is a light green color. The only spot of color on the animal is on the jowls beneath the lower jaw of the mouth, which is colored either cherry red or cyan blue.
The Green Lizard is uniform across all external features, except for one feature. The coloration below their mouth indicates their gender as males with have a large patch of cyan blue while females will have a large patch of cherry red scales. The gender populations are also equal, so it is quite common to see a sea of red and blue when someone encounters a group of Green Lizards.
Life Span and Development
The Green Lizard emerges into this world in five to twenty small soft-shelled white eggs laid in a loosely built nest of brush. Within three months, the eggs have all hatched, and the young reptiles emerge with brown scales but otherwise smaller replicas of their parents. Their mother does not care for them, and their father is not present, though they do not need such care as they immediately set about eating and growing in size. Within a year, their green scales have come in while their bodies and minds have fully matured. An interesting feature of the Green Lizard is that similar to the Allar, the Green Lizard can grow their tails and fingers back, though not full limbs. During this process, the body part appears red-green before shifting fully into the normal green color scheme of the animal when the regeneration is complete. They can live for up to seven years, though can live up to ten in captivity.
Green Lizards are exceedingly simple creatures, with basic survival skills and behavior to help keep themselves alive. As they are warm-blooded, they can often be found sunning themselves on rocks or open areas near their nests and sleeping spots. During this time, they may seem taken in by the moment, but in reality, this is also when they can be most active. Should they be disturbed, they will rapidly dart away, their small limbs excellent at short sprints. Once they reach the underbrush, they become immobile as their green with brown tinted scales often grants them good camouflage to young or inexperienced hunters, humanoid or animal. They also sometimes will enter the water and swim with the current away from an enemy, though they can sometimes be swept away by the current and die despite their good swimming ability. With other members of their species, they show little to no concern about them or their wellbeing, only interacting when during the spring mating season. In captivity, these same traits are displayed though they are more trusting of larger creatures and allow others to stroke or pet them.
Territory and Groupings
Green Lizards prefer damp and brushed environments for their nests and homes while also seeking open spaces to bask in the sun. Thus, many of them can be found at the edge of the sea or inland water sources like swamps or rivers. In captivity, such conditions are difficult to replicate though most Green Lizards in this situation are content enough to get direct sunlight whenever possible. Their nests are only formed during the spring mating season, while their homes are little more than small holes or protected areas in the dark.
- Young Green Lizards are occasionally confused for the young of Longtail Croques by young mothers, leading to one absolutely terrified “baby crocodile” head sticking out of a Croque’s mouth.
- Domesticated cats and domesticated Green Lizards are often at odds with each other, though very rarely does a feline ever eat the Lizard. This is mostly due to the difficulty of the task and the reptile’s small but still sharp claws.
- Some incorrectly assume the Green Lizard is from Farah’deen due to its love of the sun. Populations of the animal have made it to that region over the years, but other, more hostile reptiles and the harsh, dry climate have extinguished all of them.
