The Honey Ball is a rare fungus native to Drowda, Ellador, and Fendarfelle with ancient ties back to the Drovv Race of old who valued it as a sweet treat. Following their fall, the Sihndar were the first to enjoy the curious substance again, soon followed by the Isldar, Dwarves, and Ailor of the north. Due to its rarity, it has become a delicacy prized by many merchants and often sees its sweet blue “honey” reserved for the upper classes of many decadent societies.

Origins
Drowda’s eastern forests, with their towering spindle trees and frosty climate, house the honey ball fungi upon their snow-shod floors. Before the harrowing Void Invasion which rendered Drowda magically tainted and beset by horrific mutations of its ecosystem, the honey ball was originally a form of insignificant light “puffball” fungus which thrived in the cold east of Drowda. However, after the extensive leak of magic over Drowda’s expansive lands, the fungus was changed dramatically and morphed into a rich-tasting fungal growth amongst the icy forest floors. Its wizened spherical cap grew larger to the size of a marble, flecked with purple and encrusted with a flaky skin, hiding the sugary liquids deep within.

In Ellador however, it is speculated that either the winds carried the spores of the honey ball over the inner Storm Seas and caused it to grow upon the northern shores or that cowardly Drowdar sailors unknowingly brought it over as they made flight from their forsaken homeland.
History
Honey Balls were a delicacy enjoyed by the Drovv, isolated in northern lands of the world, far from others for centuries before the arrival of the Altalar. With their conquest by the Allorn Empire, however, the Drovv gave tribute to the Altalar in many different ways, one of these being the export of Honey Balls into Daen. While some rejected the substance, others greatly craved it, such as the Solvaan of the Regalian Archipelago. With time, the substance became rare, Drovv lands gradually shifting with time over their ancient landmass. It did not help matters when, in 94 BC, the blast of cold which truly froze the lands of The North Belt came to pass. Hundreds of Honeypits (the term for harvesting sites for the unique fungi) were wiped out, and within a hundred years, the Cataclysm shattered the north into new lands. Honey Balls were widely assumed to be extinct at this stage, but they carried on in small clusters across their oldest, original places of growth. The first to rediscover the substance were the Sihndar, who took some time to recognize the strange growth before taking to it with gusto. On Ellador, the Isldar and then the Dwarves, came into contact with remnants of the substance, though it proved much rarer on that epicenter of the unnatural cold which had originally rendered the substance unsustainable. Finally, there were the Ailor, who had traded for the substance for years without truly understanding its origin. However, when Ithanian Ailor pushed into Fendarfelle, they found samples of the substance growing wild across the northeastern coastline. The Ithanians grew immensely infatuated with the strange material, and to this day, Ithanian desserts using Honey Ball Honey are often considered the best. The fungus remains rare overall but has a steady supply to those seeking it out.

Etymology
Appearance
In the colossal black strongholds of the Drowdar, the Honey Ball is referred to as “Coron glî” and has been ever since its delightful taste was discovered. In the common tongue however, its official name of “Honey Ball” is more frequently used. Given that it may be found in the north of Ellador upon the frigid coastlines and mountainsides blanketed with carpets of snow, the various dialects of the Northerne tongue hold different and numerous variants upon the name—the main one being “Söt kluster” (roughly translating to “sweet cluster”).
Honey Balls sit between one and six inches in diameter, with a spherical shape and a thick, outer crust of which is always vibrant purple. The plant is often anchored to rotted wood or other Honey Balls around it through a singular, highly fibrous stem which can act like a root, but also mesh with other plants to help keep the organism secure. Once the Honey Ball’s tough skin has been breached, the substance’s namesake is revealed. This prized substance has the same opaque appearance and consistency as honey, but with a cyan-blue color. What this substance actually is has been up for debate for years, but is generally understood to be both a repository for the plant’s spores and as a byproduct of the Honey Ball’s decomposition of whatever substance it is attached to.

Primary Use
Uses and Abilities
The honey ball has a large amount of thick, blue liquid hidden within its globular head which has a rather sugary, syrupy taste. This liquid is the basis for the praise of the“honey ball,” given that it proves itself to be a venerable snack once roasted or baked, producing an appetizing candied refreshment much like popcorn. In marketplaces of Regalia or Ellador, it is not unusual to see sweet vendors with a tray of freshly-roasted honey ball heads and a collection of eager children awaiting a bite.
Honey Ball is exclusively used as a high-end food source by several Cultures and Races across Aloria. The fungal honey has a sweet and creamy custard taste with a hint of earthy spiciness and is best used to create glazes or sauces. Some can afford to use the substance as a spread, or as a coloring and sweetening ingredient in their baking. But due to the plant’s rarity, dishes containing pure Honey Ball are pricey, and many are inexperienced in the Honey Ball’s different uses.
*In order to make the honey ball both consumable and gain access to its honeyed contents, one must roast the heads of the fungus until the flaky purple skin turns crisp.
*Drowdar hunters noticed the attraction which certain magically-contorted animals had towards the fungus between 170-180 AC, though the exact date is unknown. After uprooting the fungus, and investigating its qualities, they discovered it’s sweet honeyed contents once they had tried roasting the cap over the licking flames of a fire, and ergo warmed the syrupy liquid inside.
* All races may either enjoy or detest the taste of the saccharine nectar of the honey ball. It is an extremely sweet aliment, and so over-consumption can lead to people feeling sick quickly.
*Roasting or sometimes baking the honey ball is necessary to make it suitable for consumption. Eating honey ball without first doing so can result in minor stomach pains as the spores expand as a result of moisture and swell within the intestines. Kleinfolk or the A’rafa subrace of the Q’urebo often have more severe cases of this where they tend to become very bloated as a result of struggling to digest the spores and not having as strong a digestive ability as other races.
