Juliana do Lobo, often called de Lobo due to her affinity for Ithanians and their Language, is likely to be the last monarch of the Kingdom of Lusits, a Bragacao Ailor kingdom that has existed for over a century within the bounds of Daendroc. Juliana was born and appeared for many years to be normal, before shortly after her crowning, when an obsession with beauty and fashion gripped her to the point of madness. At the height of her power, she was obsessed with people out to steal her beauty, but ultimately was somehow charmed into agreeing to marriage with the Regalian Emperor Alexander I. She has now faded from the public eye, but her memory lives on, largely in fashion and in those who have met her for she is hard to forget.

Origins and Early Life

Juliana do Lobo was born to Fernando do Lobo and his Ithanian wife, Julienne, late in the day on February 9th, 273 AC. For several days though, her father suffered from his “cowardly man”, and refused to leave a small area of the royal apartments which he deemed safe. Emerging from his mental state, he was quick to love his daughter and his wife in that brief time he was lucid. The latest in a long line of mentally handicapped monarchs of the Kingdom of Lusits, the king’s Ithanian princess wife was unique among all for having befriended the three different personas of the king, in addition to his normal state. As a result, while other women had failed to match with the king, Julienne succeeded and ultimately, birthed Juliana. In these early years, the mother and the court watched the girl nervously for signs of physical or mental deficiency. But the girl never exhibited any. However, in 283 AC, when she was ten, her mother passed away. Her last wish, carried out by those around Juliana, was that the girl goes to Julienne’s family in the nearby Hivre San-lume, a long-standing partner with Lusits in business, marriage and more. And so, after saying goodbye to her father, she left Lusits and sailed across the Gulf of Lusits to form a new chapter of her life.

History

In the court of Hivre San-lume’s leadership, Juliana do Lobo matured and blossomed into a fine young woman. She was gifted in poetry and the art of fashion, yet was not engaged in competition or courtship feuds with her fellow ladies as all knew she was merely being fostered here. Her acquisition of a man was all but certain due to Lusit’s prestige, and in whispered words, because she finally seemed like a normal do Lobo. Indeed, none of the crippling obsessions, ticks, or mental issues from her family line appeared to manifest in her. Instead, she looked like she would be the perfect queen: kind, contemplative, and generous. At the age of 18, her father’s health took a drastic plunge and word was brought to her of the situation. Preparations began for her departure, but before she even set foot back in her nation, he was dead. In mourning for several weeks, and carefully watched over by many, Juliana did not break. She attended her father’s funeral with the poise and power of a queen and soon afterwards, a day after she turned 19, she was crowned as queen. For over a year, she ruled well, but most point out that by that point, her position was little more than a rubber stamp on most of the policies that the court of ministers beneath her, with heavy guidance from Regalia, was administering. She was exceptionally famous for reinvigorating court life, bringing with her Ithanian ideals, games and more to a dull upper class, thus causing it to flourish.

But soon after she turned 20, an oddity rapidly became an obsession, and then finally, to the sadness of many, madness. How it started is unknown, but she slowly became gripped with the terrifying idea that her beauty, face, fashion, and her youth, were coveted by others. She became obsessed with chains, locks, cages, anything to mentally assure herself that she was safe. Around her, Ithanian tailors and dressmakers birthed the eccentric and insane fashions of her rule, the “crowning achievement” being “The Gaiola de Cabeça”, a cage that was oft made of thin scraps of valuable metals designed to sit over one’s head. Its purpose was to prevent the theft of her beauty, and adding to this, veils and other obscuring fabrics were also added around the face. Some came to blame her Ithanian attendants for increasing and catering to her fears, but most simply shook their heads in sadness for the loss of a promising do Lobo monarch. Despite this insanity however, she still performed her roles in court. There was merely far more ceremony attached to them, deference away from looking at her face being a major one. By 300 AC, Juliana do Lobo, even with her madness, was an eligible bachelorette, with a grand and successful kingdom deeply tied to the Regalian Empire.

Later Life

In 303 AC, Juliana do Lobo found herself entertaining a very surprising guest: Emperor Alexander I and much of the Imperial administration, who had left the Regalian Archipelago in the wake of the First Songaskian War conquering the Crown Isle. Unknown to most except the most intimate and closely-knit friends and confidants to the two monarchs, somehow, a wedding was arranged. Juliana do Lobo was oddly enough a very willing participant and was soon married to Alexander I in the Ithanian city bought wholesale to serve as the temporary Imperial Seat, Joyau-vert du Nord. Since that time, she has been with the Kades, and soon after the marriage, became pregnant and eventually gave birth to three new children for Alexander I (who had been married once before) over the course of the coming years. Additionally, since the wedding, she has largely withdrawn into a life of seclusion within Anglia, surrounded by her household and many luxuries. However, it seems that this is not so much because she is the Empress, but because childbirth has so enormously taxed her. Her body, while beautiful, was always also worryingly described as frail by some, but for now, she’s still a presence, albeit a very minor one, within the Imperial family.

Personality

In her madness, few if anyone can properly know Juliana do Lobo. For many in the Regalian Archipelago, she is often seen as a woman so taken with herself and fashion that it seems there’s scarcely room for anything else in her life. In short bursts, one might presume the woman is something of a petty socialite, or even a little vapid and contrary. As for the people of Lusits, they know her at the very least to be somewhat eccentric and capable of rapidly changing her mood. From her belief and fear that her beauty leaks out of her, to the odd styles and fashion she brings to court, the woman is known to spend hours in front of a mirror studying her face meticulously for any signs of aging or blemishing. Beyond her characterizing vanity, the Queen of Lusits is known to be wildly extravagant and outrageous in anything and everything she does, from the simplest, menial daily tasks, to the annual rituals and ceremonies royalty demands.

Legacy

There are many legacies for Juliana do Lobo, but few are arguably good. Her fashion and eccentrically lushious ways have left an unforgettable imprint on many who have met her, as well as the Kingdom of Lusits’ coffers. In general, her fashion statements have become legendary and while none wear the insane outfits she once had surrounding her at her court, accents and references to them in the latest generations of regional wear abound. Additionally, her clothing style has become somewhat of a museum piece abroad, especially in exotic locales like Farah’deen. Her other legacy is that she is likely to be the last queen of Lusits. While she does have two children, most assume that by the time they mature, the Kingdom of Lusits will have been absorbed as a viceroyalty or governorship under the Regalian Empire, as they already dominate politics so much, the return on the monarch would just usher in a pointless figurehead. Granted, none truly know the future of Aloria (especially considering the many twists and turns it has taken in recent years) but the do Lobos as a house will likely not last much longer.

Extended Family

Juliana do Lobo is an only child, and both of her parents have predeceased her. She has scattered Bragacao relatives from the do Lobo line, but most are in their final years, as the family’s policy of inbreeding means that she is the lone member of her remaining family below the age of 40. On her mother’s Ithanian side, she has plenty of relatives, with a number now surrounding her in Anglia in the wake of the recent turmoil in the Ithanian Sovereignty. She is married to Alexander Kade, the first Kade Emperor of the Regalian Empire, and has sired three children with him, a daughter named Jezeme and two sons called Karlos and Marcos respectively. All have been born from separate pregnancies. Through her husband, she has a vast slew of relatives, very few she has ever met.

Trivia

  • Juliana do Lobo has a deep focus on clocks, stemming from a hobby back when she was growing up in Ithania. It is said that her bedroom walls are filled with clocks of all sorts, endlessly ticking out a 100 different times.
  • Since the death of the Ithanian Sovereign, executed in 307 AC after a bungled attempt by Ithanian-sympathetic nobles in the Regalian Archipelago to have her released, some now look toward Juliana do Lobo as a new major cultural figure, despite her isolation.
