Kadite, formerly known as “Jet”, is a gem that is rumored to have the ability to protect people from evil spirits or creatures of the Void. Inside the Regalian Archipelago it is widely used in funerary practices and the creation of mourning jewelry. Among worshippers of Estel it is considered to have protective properties and is capable of warding off things that emanate from the Void. Outside of the Crown Isle is it rarely found naturally, though is something that can be found in obscure trade shops for a high price. While the gemstone is common among practitioners of funeral arts, it is never sold cheap and pieces of Kadite jewelry are often passed down as heirlooms to be worn at the funerals of close friends and family.
Kadite is a well known hard, black gemstone thanks to its name and for its supposed abilities to absorb and nullify Magic. The substance was identified before the ascendance of House Kade, but following their rise, it was renamed in honor of their (and all Anglians like them) jet black hair. Today, while the material is uncommon, is worn by all who can get their hands on it to show their devotion either to the Imperial Family or to the Imperial Culture they created.

History
History
Kadite was originally discovered by Ailor miners deep in coal mines in the Regalian Archipelago in 13 AC. At first, Anglian superstition caused gem cutters to refuse to use it, or even buy it, because they believed it was crystallized Void essence. In 41 AC however, jewelers under the patronage of House Kade took an increased interest in the jewel due to its aesthetic similarity to their masters and began to use it in intricately carved pieces of art, decorated objects and in jewelry. The mineral slowly grew popular with this support from House Kade and the mineral’s popularity was soon reaching into the nobility of other regions. Jewelers on the Crown Isle began referring to the mineral as Kadite, and it has been known by that name ever since. In recent years, the price of Kadite has increased dramatically. The appearance of Silven, an increase of practitioners of the School of Magic, multiple magical events and the rise of the Kade family to the role of Imperial Family has jewelers raising the price of Kadite jewelry constantly.
Kadite was discovered in 100 BC by Ailor living on the Crown Isle, back when the island’s mountains were mined in the name of the Kingdom of Regalia. At the time it was uncovered, the substance was mistaken for Coal and so was unsuccessfully burned. By the time of the Cataclysm, the substance had been identified as different and earned the name Blackstone, and was also located in different sites across the Regalian Archipelago. With the events of the Five Family Rebellion, the substance’s black coloration was soon exalted and tied to House Kade. At the same time, for unknown reasons, folktales and myths about the material coalesced that claimed the substance possessed the ability to nullify and absorb Magic. This might have simply been because of its black color, or maybe some greater occurrence, but if so, such an event is lost to time. Today, Kadite remains popular as a material for a number of decorative items, from simple to complex accessories for all classes, though nobility are often the only group able to afford statuettes and sculptures carved from this dark substance.

Appearance
Appearance
In it’s unrefined state, Kadite appears very similar to coal, though when placed in the hand of an experienced jeweler it can be cut into a number of shapes and forms. While it is very easy to carve and shape, it is difficult to refine with hard details and is most commonly carved into spheres or other geometric shapes.
Kadite is a pitch black mineral with a smooth and glossy surface, one of its key distinguishers from brittle and jagged Coal. Some have compared it to black glass, which is correct, but is only flawed in that Kadite doesn’t allow light into itself, merely reflecting off of its surface once it has been cut and polished. It most commonly appears in a smooth, ovular form in jewelry.

General Uses
General Uses
Kadite is essentially only useful in jewelry and decor pieces. This is especially true for large, intricate necklaces and rings where the jewels are inset and are very rarely carved into fancy shapes. In it’s crude and unrefined form, it is uncommonly found on the jewelry of members of the Faith of Estel.
Kadite is most commonly used for decoration, both on people through being included in a variety of accessories and in the space around them through short statuary work.

Abilities
While it has never been proven, Kadite is rumored to have the ability to ward off evil spirits and creatures of the Void. As it is difficult to test whether this is true, any testing done by jewelers or otherwise have concluded inconclusive. Other uses for Kadite are currently being tried by the Qadir, but due to the difficulty they have acquiring it, that has not progressed very far.

Trivia
Trivia
*House Kade owns approximately one half of all the Kadite jewelry in existence, and no other noble close even comes close to their ownership of this.
*Despite their ties to it and their creation of the black-color focused Imperial Culture, House Kade has generally avoided using the substance. Perhaps time has made them feel its name and use by them would be cliche.
*Rumors have been spread that the Qadir have discovered a way of using Kadite as a conductor for electricity, though it is unknown if they have actually succeeded in using it.
*Heartland Ceardians commonly use the material when they are in mourning, especially if they are women and often wear jewelry.
*A scandal surrounding a favorite jeweler of the Crown Isles was discovered, in which he was making jewelry out of black glass and not Kadite. After this discovery he was executed, and his jewelry was seized by the Regalian state.

History

Characteristics

Appearance

Kadite is a pitch black mineral with a smooth and glossy surface, one of its key distinguishers from brittle and jagged Coal. Some have compared it to black glass, which is correct, but is only flawed in that Kadite doesn’t allow light into itself, merely reflecting off of its surface once it has been cut and polished. It most commonly appears in a smooth, ovular form in jewelry.

General Uses

Kadite is most commonly used for decoration, both on people through being included in a variety of accessories and in the space around them through short statuary work.

Trivia

 • Despite their ties to it and their creation of the black-color focused Imperial Culture, House Kade has generally avoided using the substance. Perhaps time has made them feel its name and use by them would be cliche.
 • Heartland Ceardians commonly use the material when they are in mourning, especially if they are women and often wear jewelry.
