Linguistics is a [[Proficiency#Point-Buy|Point-Buy]] mechanic that allows a Character to speak additional languages. Each new language costs 3 Proficiency Points to learn. Languages are grouped into Categories of 3 each, except for orphaned languages, which do not have relatives. When all 3 languages in a Category are learned (either by paying 9 points, or by being raised in one and buying the 2 others), an extra Unlocked Language is learned for free, without any point cost. This is the only way to learn that Unlocked Language, it cannot simply be bought.

*'''Native tongues work as follows.'''
**Common, based on IRL English, is free for all to know. That being said, if you want to make a Character that does not know Common, that is allowed.
**Your character may learn one additional language for free, which is dictated not by their parents, but the region in which they were raised (if they traveled around, choose one of the regions). For example, if a Character was raised in a city predominantly inhabited by High-Anglian speakers, then they will learn High-Anglian as a second language (or birth-language).
**Any further additional Languages require points invested into this Proficiency.
**Any character raised in Regalia only knows Common.

When your Character is speaking in another Language, put <Language>, <Lang>, or <La> before their words, so others know they are not speaking Common.
