A widely known species, the Nimbinoldor is a domesticated bird species. They are often kept for hunting, or simply as social animals. Only having a history spanning about 150 years, many people are still unknowing of the bird. However it is popular among Rangers and some have even been found in Regalia, favored for their friendliness and hunting capability.
First Recorded Encounter
The Nimbinoldor was first found when a Yanar by the name of Galathil begun to explore in the Daendroc forests around Medlem Talar. As it was walking, it had noticed a group of green and brown hawks looking at him. It paused, allowing the animal to make the first move, and within moments the hawks flew closer to inspect him. Galathil was able to lure one back to his house and was easily able to domesticate it with food. It recorded this down in a personal notebook, and is the first known domestication of the Nimbinoldor. Later, another Lothar had stumbled across his notes and found that the Nimbinoldor was indeed a tame bird. Word of mouth spread within the tribe, and through trade, other people were able to get their hands on the amiable bird.
The Nimbinoldor is a common animal, although there are fewer in the wilderness as it is widely sold throughout Aloria. It is not in danger of extinction, but is being pulled out of its natural habitat and could lose the ability to survive in the wild if held in captivity long enough. People who enjoy hunting wild game generally purchase these birds due to their effectiveness as hunters of prey.
A Nimbinoldor looks remarkably similar to a common Hawk. In terms of height, males stand at 1 ½ feet and females at just 1 ¼. Feather coloration is commonly green or brown, with three white stripes heading from head to tail. Their wings stretch about 6 inches outwards, while the tail is spread out like a fan. Nimbinoldor claws grow at a very slow pace, and only the tips gain any sharpness.
Notable Physical Traits
These birds have odd feather patterns. Three white stripes start from the head and end at their fan-like tails. Male Nimbinoldor have thicker and longer stripes than female Nimbinoldor, but the change does not benefit their flight in any way. There is a variety of colors within the Nimbinoldor, yet the most common color is brown. It is said that their fan-like tails help direct airflow while they dive, and their thin, slick feathers are designed for speed and high velocities when diving. Most Nimbinoldor are very swift, being able to reach up to 180 mph when diving in the air.
Origin and Diversity
The Nimbinoldor originated from Daendroc, descending from other hawk species. Nimbinoldor can live in any mild temperature, though are found to be most lively in Daendroc and its forested areas. Gender population is fairly balanced, however males are favored due to an increase in size when compared to the female hawks. Typical environments include any Daendroc forest, rivers, and occasionally humid coastlines.
Life Span and Development
The average Nimbinoldor lives about 15 years, reaching physical maturity at 5. The stripes on its back start off very large, slowly growing shorter as the bird grows. Nimbinoldors hatch from an egg 6 months after first being conceived. Physical deterioration begins at 14, often showing with calm and docile behavior and less activity. Many untrained owners aren’t aware of its dietary imprint, and can cause shortened lifespans due to feeding it food it will not eat, even if others have had success with the same food.
Nimbinoldors are all able to be tamed, and show little to no signs of hostility towards humanoids or the sentient races of Aloria. Nimbinoldor also have a keen sense of sight and hearing, often reacting quickly in situations. They have a strong dietary imprint as well, and refuse to eat any foods they were not fed in the first year of their life, though they have been known to dislike any species of fish. Lastly, they are most cheerful when left in open conditions though, and grow very claustrophobic if kept indoors for too long.
Territory and Groupings
Typically Nimbinoldor travel in family groups, often flying around different areas of Daendroc for no apparent reason. They rarely show hostility towards each other, and hunt in groups of three to four. Due to their natural fondness towards sentient races, Nimbinoldor tend to live closer to established settlements. It has been observed that two groups of Nimbinoldor will never cross each other because they do not compete for food or shelter, only flocking to another area when in need of new resources.
- Nimbinoldor are rarely hunted for their feathers, as it is considered cruel and a violation against nature. Their meat is bland and tastes poorly, so other races don’t choose to hunt them either.
- The Lothar have developed a style of tracking Nimbinoldor, being able to use them to discover new food sources and scouts for signs of danger. Patterns in the bird’s behavior have been studied and many Lothar can foretell danger by the way they behave in certain environments.
- Many non-Elves who sell the bird refer to them simply just Hawks or Birds, often exaggerating their hunting prowess.
