History
It is unknown when the Orcs of Guldar first encountered the Ollivear, but the first recorded encounter was made by an enslaved Human scribe working inside the kingdom of Thelassia in the years following the cataclysm. Within his diary, he wrote a scrawled account, from which the following is an excerpt:
The Ollivear has been an element at the margins of history for millennia, dating back to the Allorn Empire. It was a beast the Elves encountered and sought to understand, but once that was accomplished, they largely left it alone. It roamed a significant expanse of territory, but its living in the wilderness rarely brought it into conflict with the growing Allorn Empire, save for when a new city was raised, cutting back the wilds. As the Empire wore on, periodic cullings of the ugly bird’s populace sought to limit their expansion. However, it was the arrival of the Eronidas that dealt the greatest blow to the Ollivear. The Eronidas, fanatically anti-bird, ended up conquering large swathes of territory in which the large bird dwelt. It was rendered almost extinct from these regions, driven into the densest wilds beyond the expansive agriculture of the Pols that emerged across the lands the Eronidas seized. Elsewhere, following the Cataclysm, the Kathar almost rendered the Ollivear of southern Sileria extinct as they poured into that continent, but across the world, the bird took to the deep wilds and remained hidden. In Westwynd, the great jungles hid Ollivear, who gradually began a repopulation of lands now fully claimed by nature, and clear of Elves due to the Wildering. They even crossed coastlines, which is when the Daendroque Ailor encountered a beast from the past of their poor slave ancestors, who were often the first line of defense, and the first to die, when the birds came upon Allorn plantations. The bird remains a threat mostly to rural areas of the west, but also lurks in the deep jungles and wilds, a savage creature ready to strike against perceived foes and future meals.

“So I laid my eyes upon it, and what I saw was far from Human. I was both repulsed and intrigued at the same time. This creature, in particular, was sinewy with patches of feathers torn off and the blood of its victims splashed across its broad chest. The thing looked somewhat like an Orc, though closer to a bird in its appearance. I saw many fall to that monster today, witnessing first-hand a single bite completely crushing an Elf’s skull.”

The individual encountered had been caged by Orcs and then let free when they approached the Elven settlement.

Ollivears were originally but a nuisance to Orcs and the other inhabitants of Guldar, given they avoided other species. Certain tribes had a tradition of collecting the feathers of these beasts that one had slain and using them to adorn their armor. By this, the stronger members could be recognized by the thickness of their coat. Yet once the Ollivears were discovered to lay delectable eggs, the competition stopped being about how thick one’s coat was and turned to how many eggs one could serve at a feast. However, the Ollivear’s numbers did not suffer terribly, as it was no easy task to gather these eggs. Many Orcs died at their hands and beaks, which made the survivors all the more keen to gather plenty of eggs.

Around 200 AC, One tribe managed to ‘tame’ the birds, much to their success as a widely feared tribe. Such use generally consisted of caging the Ollivear, angering them with sharpened sticks, and then releasing them in the direction of one’s enemies. Other tribes eventually caught on, and that manner of assault became increasingly common amongst the better organized Orc tribes.

As the atmosphere of Guldar grew more toxic, the Ollivears were particularly susceptible, dying out more rapidly than other species. As the Orcs performed their mass exodus to Daendroc, many Ollivear eggs were taken for breeding upon arrival, inadvertently helping to secure the future of the race.

Since their transition to Daendroc, the Ollivears have seen little change. They are both tamed by Orcs and left to roam freely. Their eggs are still hunted and harvested as a delicacy, and particularly ostentatious Orcs still decorate their armor with the feathers of the Ollivear.

Physical Appearance
Largely due to their shared place of origin, these birdlike beasts have a similar skin tone to both Orcs, ranging from an unseemly green or grey to a rich, muddy brown. The Ollivear stands between eight to nine feet in height. Though not as wide as they are tall, the widest and shortest of the Ollivear do near that ratio. However, most are from five to six feet in width, the animal’s girth being somewhat dependent upon the availability of food.
Ollivears are massive birds, standing at anywhere from eight to nine feet in height, five to six feet in width excluding their wings, and weighing anywhere between 250 to 400 pounds. Their heads are small and rounded, with beady black eyes and a large, pointed purple beak. The beak’s base is protected by a draping of loose skin that goes all around the mouth, limiting its ability to open and strike at its customary prey, small animals, and fish. However, this skin can be retracted, permitting the Ollivear to open its beak much wider to consume or bite larger prey. Their head is connected to their body through a short neck with the rest of their body holding a pair of long wings with a wingspan of eight feet that they wrap across their bodies and a set of small taloned feet. Their skin possesses earthen tones, from dark greens to grays to dark browns though their long feathers do not share the same coloration. It begins as black on their wings, feet, first bodies, and head before morphing into a deep purple color along their necks, backs, and the majority of their wings.

Diversity
The wings of an Ollivear are long and wrap across their body, a mechanism sometimes used to protect young or shield themselves in high wind conditions. Their plumage is restricted to the back side of their body and limbs, and the feathers are a deep black at their base, gradually blending into a vibrant, dark purple. They have heads that are smaller and more rounded than their Ogre analogs, with beady eyes and a purple beak protruding from the lower portion of their face.
The population and birth ratio of male and female Ollivear is equal, but males are hunted more so than females because they have more feathers on their bodies. They also range on the upper half of the body heights the species can reach.

Life Span and Development
An odd trait these creatures possess is the way the base of the beak is draped in loose skin. This usually limits the beak’s opening range, only allowing the creature to eat small rodents and similar such things without difficulty. However, this skin can be retracted, permitting the beast to open its beak much wider, its bite big enough to consume very large prey, such as a Human.
Ollivear are born in large, fist-sized, pale-yellow eggs with purple and blue speckles along the top. These eggs often come in groups of three to five and once they hatch, reveal small, featherless Ollivear. Helpless despite possessing small talons and already sharp beaks, which they used to peck their way out of their eggs, Ollivear chicks are cared for by their parents. Over the course of a year, their feathers come in though they reach full size and mental maturity by the age of five. At this point, Ollivear usually leave their parents or younger siblings to seek their own mates. The Ollivear mates for life, and makes their nests from rocks and grasses in the area. They can live up to twenty years.

Diversity
The population of males and females is roughly equal in the Ollivear community. The males are hunted more so than the females, for their abundance of feathers. The wiser hunter will also try and avoid families for their ferocity. While the males seem stronger and slightly larger, the females are quicker and will attack far travellers far more often.

Life Span and Development
The highest populations of Ollivears are found within the mountain ranges of central Guldar, as well as in smatterings around Daendroc near Orc camps. They were discovered in the mountain ranges by travellers, and after their eggs become a commodity among hunters, they reatreated further into the mountains for protection. These creatures, despite their birdlike nature, prefer to live low upon jungle floors where they lay their eggs in caves and remain there to brood in the dark.

They tend to travel and hunt in solitude. However, the females have a strong maternal instinct, caring for their young until they are able to do so for themselves. Newly born Ollivear resemble small, featherless versions of their parents, growing their feathers and rough features by the end of their first year. Olliver will live to the age of 20, growing to maturity at 6.

Mental Overview
Ollivear are fiercely protective of their eggs. They will chase down and destroy any that come near them, but act with relative apathy to another Ollivear being attacked. They seem to look out for their own above even members of their own race. That said, the beasts will quickly move into a rage if their enemy is in their sights for too long, a trait the orcs that capture them use to great effect. Beyond this rage filled want to protect their own, the beasts are quite simple minded.
Ollivear are hostile, dangerous birds with a few notable quirks to them. They are protective of their eggs, chasing down or attacking those who try to take them, and get more erratic and angry the longer their foe is alive. They are also protective of their chicks but after the first year, grow relatively complacent in caring for them and leave them to their own devices. They rarely come to the aid of other Ollivear as the birds put the family unit before the larger species. The animal is also known for enjoying the shade, often creating their nesting ground in the shade of shallow caves, overhangs, or beneath large jungle foliage. In all other matters, they are relatively simple-minded, easily lured into traps, and rudimentary in their hunting techniques which often involves suddenly stabbing at a target with their closed beak to spear it through before going to bite at it.

The Ollivear will travel in small packs. If one part of the pack is killed off by some beast, but the others are unharmed, they will likely leave the corpse of their kin for the crows, moving onto the next spot. These beasts will travel during the warmer seasons, but always stop to claim some recluse, rocky forest as their own.
Ollivears live in small packs made up of one to three family groups. These packs are not directly attached to each other, however, and live within proximity to each other. They share a common territory of several miles when they are nesting. They are known to move around during the spring and summer, though these movements sometimes bring them in a large circle back to the original nesting ground they started at.

Ollivears are large, hideous birds possessing long feathers, great physical size, and delicious eggs.
