Omnaleya is a light material not easily sharpened with a unique red color filled with lines of brown running throughout it. While not particularly strong or used in any significant military capacity, the material is far more common in the leisure and entertainment areas of Aloria due to its unique ability to create a low pitched buzzing tone when it is moved through the air. For this reason, it is commonly used in musical activities, as well as casually in fencing sabers or one-off unique weapons for use by eccentric swordsmen.

History

Omnaleya, similar to Mocra, was well known but ultimately inaccessible by the Altalar for centuries before the Cataclysm. However, in 500 BC, smiths in western Daen cracked the code for forging the material. Unfortunately, the secret of this metal soon became a battlefield, literally. A portion of this cabal of smiths were Void Worshipers, and sought to escape to the Far West in 440 BC to share the knowledge with their people. In pursuit, their former friends, Loyalist Altalar, engaged them in the port city of Omn’Gustrelle. The devastation was massive, with six warehouses, twenty homes, three ships, and the city’s lighthouse collapsed, with some 600 people dead, the majority being innocents caught in the magical crossfire. Following this tragic event, the material gained the name it is known as today, which roughly translates to Omn’s Suffering. Regardless of the devastation, the Altalar Loyalists prevented the future Kathar from gaining knowledge of the substance, and quickly moved to the eastern coastline, far away from the obviously interested eyes of the Void enthralled. From that time on, the Altalar masters oversaw a brief musical revolution with the substance used in unique rods designed for use in dancing. Today, the Altalar still use Omnaleya for this purpose, Omnal Dancing being a strange and unique ritual mostly practiced within Altalar territory alone, though, with recent world conflicts and shifts in power, a few tropes have moved into Ithania, then out of Ithania, or into Corontium to ply their trade. With them have come Altalar smiths, seeking new lands and new profits to be made through their unique set of skills.

Characteristics

Appearance

Omnaleya often appears close to coastlines and has a reddish-brown coloration to the raw ore. Once refined, the substance is a deep, burgundy shade of red with darker brown cracks running through it in a random, natural pattern.

General Uses

Omnaleya is most commonly used in the creation of Omnal Sticks, unique metal rods designed to make use of the musical capabilities of the substance. They usually exist in a pair to be held in one’s hands, but longer, double-handed rods also exist for more elaborate music activities. Aside from these Sticks, general musical equipment such as false/stiff bells made from the substance also exist. The material is also sometimes used in weaponry, most commonly elegant swords due to the material’s lightweight, though it is very difficult to keep sharp. For this reason, some use the material in fencing sabers, given their lack of a need for sharpness. Finally, the material’s unique color scheme and lightness, it also sees use in jewelry.

Abilities

Omnaleya has a unique ability as when moved through the air at almost any speed, it produces a deep pitched buzzing noise. It gets louder the faster the material moves through the air, and is also dampened by existing flat to another surface like skin. For this reason, most Omnaleya jewelry exists as necklaces. But, the sound will never truly abate, and almost always exist in the background, unless someone is moving extremely slowly.

Trivia

  • Omnaleya’s former name was Juhnajloss.
  • Most fencing groups have banned the use of Omnaleya-based blades, as the sound is said to be nerve-fraying in that sport. However, a few others have taken the opposite approach, and insist that only those blades can be used, creating somewhat otherworldly looking and sounding duals.
  • Devout Old Faith worshipers typically despise the material and Omnal Sticks and Dancing as the screaming earth, and consider it linked to Altalar cruelty and arrogance in controlling nature.
