A very similar situation played out in the New Ceardian Colonies as had occurred in Arlora and Torse, as miners uncovered the substance, were briefly elated, and then were dismayed by the supposedly “false Silver.” It took a few years before merchants and experts were able to ascertain that this was yet more Pyrignis, unseen in nearly a century, which rapidly expanded mining endeavors. To this day, there exist many towns that were born solely out of the rush for this mineral, alongside the normal Silver it appears near.

Pyrignis is an uncommon material found in Essalonia and Carrhen and lacks a use in the creation of weapons or other conventional tools. Indeed, for much of its early history with different groups, it was discarded as false Silver. But, it eventually was revealed to have a value given its reflective quality, and unique coloration. It has played a key role in boosting the economy of the Veløya nations.

History

The history of Pyrignis, its trade, extraction, and production within Essalonia, is noted to be a tedious one. Pyrignis was initially discovered by the peoples of Arlora and neighboring Torse, and was one of the substances they fought over. While they initially thought it to be Silver, foreign merchants first dismissed it as useless because it was not true Silver. But, they soon learned that this material was a brand new substance and had its own value given its gleaming appearance, quickly changing their tune. Now interested in the substance, Arlora and Torse continued to fight over it. In nearby Silbrae, the substance was also discovered but was exhausted quickly which resulted in Silver remaining the nation’s primary financial supporter. Meanwhile, in distant Carrhen, it took until after the Cataclysm for the metal to be properly identified and mined. Why it was likely initially ignored was due to the same reasons as those in Essalonia, with Velheim and Ceardian locals believing it was some sort of tainted or tarnished Silver. However, they soon realized their mistake, and it forms a part of the local economy between these southern nations. To this day, there exist many towns that were born solely out of the rush for this mineral all across Aloria, alongside the normal Silver it appears near.

Characteristics

Appearance

Pyrignis has a mostly cuboid or dodecahedron structure to its natural formation, and a bright, shiny silver coloration to its surface as well. It attaches itself to other metals, most commonly Silver, but also sometimes Gold. The material in this state also weakly reflects any light shone on it. Once processed, Pyrignis adopts a yellowed-silver color with a high degree of reflectivity, even when not polished.

General Uses

Pyrignis has two main uses, both being appearance-related. The first is in high-end jewelry, adorning the wealthy or those that can afford one piece of beautiful personal adornment. The most common use is in earrings or normal rings, though some also enjoy necklaces of the material given its reflective qualities. The other use of the metal also relates to this reflectiveness, and that is in mirrors. While more expensive, gilded varieties exist for those who seek it out, an upgrade of Copper mirrors to Pyrignis mirrors for the middle class is possible in certain homes, but they are often small and far plainer than others. The metal can be used in other capacities, but the material is still largely seen in a decorative capacity.

Trivia

  • Pyrignis weapons, while ornate and often only ceremonial, are still effective given that the material is as strong as metals like Iron or Steel.
  • Despite being considered a different material, Pyrignis is still often clumped into Silver in terms of cultural dislike by groups like the Altalar and the Ithanians.
