Roughvine is a substance that has been known to those residents of Farah’deen for untold centuries. Existing along the coastline, it grows above the waves and clings to the walls of the many coastal cities that dot the region, being a particular problem for pearl cities whose pure white beauty is marred by these fast-growing vines every few months. The plants have little purpose, though a medical role as a muscle relaxant is highly prized by those who seek it out. While recent conflicts in the area have greatly damaged the populations of the plants in Farah’deen, it is likely that this will not last long, and the Roughvines will recover quickly.

An old plant said to be originally strands of Amasoluas’ hair, the plant grew on Hadar for years and when the Slizar made contact, spread itself across Sendras. Used in ancient times as the Naylar equivalent to rope, it helped to build many structures essential to Naylar growth in the region. Yet in the Chrysant War that consumed it’s habitat, the vine was hit hard with a vast amount being burned. Now, it has begun to recover and a new use has been discovered by the humans who came with the force that now occupies Hadar, The Regalian Demilitarized Governate of the Southern Isles.
History
Roughvine was long a feature of Farah’deen before the Sariyd Empire rose on arid Farah’deen. It always kept to the coastline and became seen by many as almost an extension of the seaweed that grew in the waters that ringed the continent. As a result, it was often tied more with ocean and water gods rather than anything connected to the earth. As the Qadir grew more sophisticated and gradually coalesced into their uniting government, they built their great pearl cities along the coastline. While they often had to clean away Roughvine in the process, they soon realized one small irritation of the location of their settlements: the Roughvine always came back. The Qadir dealt with this issue as best they could, and became experts at stripping the hardy plant from their pristine white walls. It was also during this time that the vine’s medicinal use was discovered due to experimentation by poorer Qadir citizens. When the Great Storm eventually came across Farah’deen and raged against all life, Roughvine survived quite well. Not only was its exterior leathery, well-formed to protect itself from such a harsh element, but it clung to the coastline and survived the destruction of the interior and clearing out of the pearl cities. In fact, in a few cases, by the time the Songaskians reached the cities, the plant had grown thick upon the walls.

Origins
It took decades for the Songaskians to become skilled in the removal of the plant. Following the Cataclysm in northern Farah’deen, the Hadrav’yan Ailor learned of the plant and its medicinal use through fleeing Qadir and pursuing Songaskians, and the plant became dense on the rocky coastlines of the many regional islands. It wasn't until in more recent years during the First and Second Songaskian War that Roughvine suddenly saw a change for the worse in its history. As Regalian fleets began besieging the coastal pearl cities of the Songaskian Masaya, mortar and cannon fire burned the Roughvine growing on the walls, causing regional damage that sent large amounts of debris into the water. Though all was not lost, Roughvine did become far more rare and has since been more difficult to come by in the medical world. Still, it has thrived in the relatively non-coastal-ravaged northern reaches of Farah’deen, and soon, its population is likely to recover.
Ancient myths say that one day, a Lizzar sailor awoke upon a beach after a shipwreck clutching a large green strand of something. As he claimed that Amasolua had personally saved him, it was believed the plant was Amasoluas hair. It was taken to a nearby temple built in her honor where it grew across the entire island and reached even beyond that. However, some claim the plant was on Hadar before this event yet were assumed to be heretics or mad if they said this (most now don’t really care about the plants origins). Used as a crude rope years ago, it helped with construction, shipbuilding, and hunting. When the Slizar arrived, they took to using the plant as well. Soon though, the invention of the rope made the plant useless except for use by hunters and in temples dedicated to Amasolua.
It then became apart of the background as history moved on yet soon it became a great tool in the grand conflict of the Chrysant War. Naylar guerilla soldiers and civilians used the plant more than ever to cover their hidden bases, to set foot traps in the jungles and to crude build defensive weapons. Yet it had another use, this for those on the opposite side of the conflict. The Imperial Marines used it as a discrete fire starter when inland and in their camps. Once the war was done, they grow back swiftly, filling islands with curtains of vegetation and taking over ruins of Naylar villages. Yet now it faces a new threat, that in the form of the backwards and highly ambitious Mekett who have begun to cut swaths into the jungles for resources. Yet the vine stays strong, bonded together and growing slowly up trees and buildings.

Etymology
Appearance
Called Rafu-Suru or “Roughvine” since the beginning for it’s light prickles that cause minor scratches to the open flesh, an alternate name was Tafu-Suru or “Toughvine” for it’s strength. When the Slizar arrived on Hadar, some people noted the serpentine nature of the vine and another name of “Slizvine” was born. Most Slizar dislike the name and use Rough or Toughvine instead.
At a distance, Roughvine appears like any other mundane vine native to Aloria though up close it has more variation. It grows from a “pod” which is often located under the water in a dark, shadowed location, with a vast network of tiny translucent roots attaching it to the rocks and more around it. From its “bud” sprung half a dozen Roughvine stems, which travel up nearby surfaces to sunlight and continue to expand. The actual vines are thick, ranging from one to three inches in width, with a rough, dark green surface, and overlapping “phases” of growth that shows the plant’s pathway. The vine also deploys narrow, semi-translucent anchors into the surface it is snaking up which then darkensn into a deep green upon securing its presence. The inside of the plant is dense, highly fibrous, and pale green.

Primary Use
Uses and Abilities
An ancient use for the vine was a primitive rope yet in modern times it is almost useless except for one very odd ability only discovered after the Regalian Demilitarized Governate of the Southern Isles arrived to seize control. It is now being more investigated by others after it’s odd ability of acting as a muscle relaxant has been discovered with the value of the plant slowly rising over the past five years yet not enough to afford large-scale shipping away from Hadar.
Roughvine’s only notable use is for its role as a relaxant, helping to soothe an aching body and its muscles. This usage is only achieved through the application of a salve made with the interior pale green matter of a Roughvine. It is also a prominent fix for those suffering from arthritis or other similar ailments, though, beyond Farah’deen, this is often only available to the wealthy elderly.
*The vine must be heated over time in a bit of water to allow the filaments making up the vine can loosen. Slowly squash the loosened vine into a metal bowl or pan and  wait for it to cool. Afterwards, if mixed with wax and mint, it can produce a light muscle relaxant.
*When the Governorate arrived, humans came with them. Eventually, alchemists, doctors and even some mages began to experiment with the many exotic plants found on the islands. A doctor by the name of James Malak discovered this effect after experimenting with the Vine, using some materials he found within his home.
*As the relaxant is relatively new, only being created in the last five years, few races have tested the mixture on themselves. However, Humans and Nelfin report the best results while the Naylar say it gets stuck in their scales.
*The only way for it to work correctly is if the vine is slowly “stewed” in warm water, allowing for the tightly bought filaments that make it up to slowly dissolve and break the vine apart.
