List of Past Nations and States
Throughout Alorian history, there have been many kingdoms, nations, and empires that have risen. While some still exist today, many others lay in ruins or have been morphed beyond their origins. This list of the Past Nations and States of Aloria not only acts as a repository of historical knowledge, but also background information for various conflicts.
Founded on ideals of loyalty and protection, the Regalian Kingdom was a monarchy that existed for several hundred years, taking up areas of what are now Anglia, Rosendale, and the Crown Isle. It had been formed to help unite these lands in defense from Solvaan and later, Velheim, raiders. Unfortunately, the Kingdom grew corrupt and laid back, with many today suspecting Elven riches to be the leading cause. Ultimately, the Kingdom collapsed shortly after the Cataclysm to the Five Family Rebellion which proceeded to reform the Kingdom into an Empire. Today Anglia’s oldest castles still hold artifacts and architecture from that period, as do some minor sites scattered about the remaining regions.
The Hecarian Kingdom was a nation as old as the Regalian Kingdom but built on a far less stable foundation. It had been founded on the union of two cultural groups, known as the Hacars and the Vularos in areas of what is today Vixhall and Vultaro & Montania. The monarchy constantly had to balance the power of both groups, attempting many futile marriages to fix the divide. In 28 AC, Regalia went to war with the state in the First Hecarian Conflict and successfully seized the north of what is today Vixhall, before peace was negotiated in 30 AC. The Kingdom collapsed shortly afterward in 32 AC as accusations of bribes and poor generaling tore the nation apart from the inside. Very little of this state remains today aside from the odd sunken ruin in Vixhall.
Formed out of the Hacars who broke off their union with the Vularos, the Hacarian Kingdom was very similar in structure to the Hecarian Kingdom. Mainly river dwellers, the nation prospered as much as it could during the four decades it existed, with an angry Vularian Kingdom next door and Regalia looming over them both. In 71 AC they were forced to concede more territory to Regalia, before finally being annexed alongside the Vularian Kingdom after the Second Hecarian Conflict of 91 AC. Ruins of this kingdom still dot the coastline of Vixhall or lay abandoned among the many vineyards.
The Vularian Kingdom was created by the Vularos, the people who were once united with the Hacars to create the Hecarian Kingdom. Mainly mountain men, the Vularos were always described as a wholly antagonistic people. Ruled by a highly autocratic dynasty, the Vularian Kingdom kept its cities near the mountains in what is now Montania. Eventually, their assumed unassailable position was conquered alongside their old Hacar ally in 91 AC during the Second Hecarian Conflict. Due to the modern-day upheaval Montania has endured, many sites related to this kingdom have been destroyed with some isolated ruins surviving in the mountains.
The Iltar Kingdom was a mercantile state that once existed on what is now known as Basta and other nearby Anglian islands. A trading partner with many kingdoms within the Regalian Archipelago, the Iltar themselves are said to have been a group highly influential on Emperor Theomar I due to their aid in the Five Family Rebellion. Under his successor, Leomar I, the Iltar became a major target. Rather than attacking them, however, Regalia influenced officials and turned the Iltar king's brother to their side. In 69 AC he successfully took power in a royal coup, after which he immediately gave the territory over to Regalia. There are almost no ruins or artifacts left of this Kingdom as the establishment of the region as a hotspot for Unionism caused many of the old Iltarian structures to be torn down or largely integrated into existing constructs.
The Bergerlander Republic was a merchant republic formed in 71 AC by the unification of several minor cities around the core city of Berger in what is now southern Vultaro & Montania. A short-lived nation, it was characterized by liberal ideals and wealth as they replaced Iltar as the main trading state second only to Regalia in the Archipelago. Ultimately, their Republic and its ideals stood in the way of Regalian imperialism, and the Regalians prompted the Berger Lander War which resulted in their subjugation. What is well known about the Republic is that their wealth from their short period of existence was used to kick start the Imperial Fleet. Berger itself lies in ruins in the Montanian mountains, with few visiting the site due to the difficulty of reaching it, while most other remains of the Republic long crumbled to nothing.
The Sudlander Principality was one of the last nations formed in the Regalian Archipelago. It was created in 71 AC when a Daendroc merchant fashioned himself a kingdom out of his trading outpost in what is today Bragacão and Girobalda. Over the next several decades, it expanded by leaps and bounds, coming to control much of the coastline. They traded with foreign states, but struck up a rapport with Regalia in 97 AC. To the great surprise of Regalia, the state joined them freely in 112 AC. Sudlander ruins and structures still pepper the south, many now integrated into the major cities while some have been left abandoned by the coastline or in the deep forests.
The Eerstwald Kingdom was another long-lasting kingdom in the Regalian Empire that emerged along the coastline of what is now The Rim Isles. Channel Dukes soon rose to power in the simple nation, controlling bridges and toll points from defensible castles along the channels that divided the islands of the region from each other. A monarchy was formed shortly afterward when one of the Dukes was elevated to kingship. The Eerstwald Kings allowed the Dukes many freedoms over the years, but in 100 AC an Eerstwald King realized he was greatly losing out on tax revenues from trade in comparison to the enriched Dukes. Furious, ten years of political maneuvering and growing tension resulted in nearly all the Dukes joining the “Duke League” against the King. Regalia stepped in, brokering a peace that saw the Duke League and their lands ceded to the Empire, leaving the Kingdom at barely a third of its old mass in the hands of the Eerstwald King. Over the following years, Regalia politically outmaneuvered the state by marrying the Second Princess of Eerstwald in 140 AC to a minor Ivrae noble. In 178 AC, the Kingdom fought a battle-less war against Regalia that ended in the Kingdom’s surrender. Today, the cluster of foreign Cultures that make Rivellia its home has wiped away much of the Eerstwald society, but some ruins still dot the coastlines.
The Wirtemcaller Kingdom was felt by many scholars to be the oldest kingdom in the Regalian Archipelago. Founded by unknown parties, the Kingdom spread across what is today Greater Calemberg. It formed a stable nation built on ideals of honor and service to the king. While their military was originally very capable of dealing with attacks from outside parties, even mounting conquering offensives of their own, time only brought decay. The nation was rocked by a succession crisis in 40 AC when their young king died childless, with the ensuing crisis taking over two decades to stabilize. Actively beset by the Skagger Horde beginning in 50 AC, the military-centric nation fought hard but ultimately exhausted its limited resources, collapsing by 105 AC. Regalia eventually freed the remains of the state, and many Wirtemcaller lords joined with them in attacking the Skagger Horde. Today the Kingdom has many ruins, dotting the entire Greater Calemberg region of the Archipelago, with major cities of the region also possessing architecture from that period. These designs can also be seen in modern fortresses found scattered over the borders of Drixagh.
The Skagger Horde was the primary enemy Regalia fought for a period of 111 years from 68 to 179 AC based out of Drixagh, Norrland, Zemlya Obitovana, Clannadh Alba and Gallovia. A collection of wandering raiders with no unified government, the Horde became a problem for Regalia after the Sack of Verguldulf in Anglia, resulting in the first of two Holy Wars declared against them. Eventually, they came to a head with the full Regalian Army and Navy coming down upon the Velheimers, an event that ultimately saw them lose badly and flee, mainly to Nordskag. The recent political turmoil in Drixagh has resulted in the widespread destruction of many ancient sites related to the Horde, but artifacts can be found scattered across the Northbelt.
The Sariyd Empire is the lost Empire of the Qadir. An expansive state that was noted for its immense technological knowledge, it was also enthralled to the service of a dark Ordial god. Once this being was successfully removed, the Sariyd continued to flourish, however a conflict eventually arose against the Dragons of Farahdeen. Wielding terrible weapons, the Qadir hunted their foes and drove them back with terrible force. Feeling trapped, these Dragons thus enacted the Great Storm, a terrible cyclone of sand that annihilating the Sariyd Empire and allowing the Songaskia (the offspring of these Dragons) to come in and easily pick up the pieces. Today the Songaskian Masaya that conquered the ruins of the Sariyd demonizes this old state as cold logical run amok without emotion. Most Sariyd ruins were integrated into the buildings of the Songaskian Masaya, but some still lie undiscovered or remote out in the deserts of Farahdeen.

The Allorn Empire is seen by some as the true successors to the ancient Seraph, possessing a vast empire that stretched across the continent of Daen, with client states and outposts reaching even further. However, centuries of decadence and politics degraded the nation and the Altalar people as a whole into a squabbling group of principalities who only nominally owed any loyalty to the Empress. The Fifth Void Invasion put an end to the Empire while the Wildering and the chaotic slave uprisings that followed helped to shatter the state into many fragments. Hundreds of structures from the Allorn Empire dot the whole land of Daen, some still in use like those found in Ithania, while others are overgrown ruins in much of the jungles of southern Daen.

The Dewamenet Empire is a polity very poorly understood in the modern-day. Tales of its power survive among the Asha, who tell of great metal constructs and great, powerful acts achieved through their harnessing of lightning. Further details of this civilization have been obscured by the Altalar though, who upon conquest of the Dewamenet Empire, wiped any trace of it from the world. Unfortunately, they could not wipe out its citizens, the Asha, and instead degraded and enslaved them. Despite these efforts, the shifting sands of Daen's deserts sometimes reveal new ruins of this ancient past, while the Ashal Islands largely retained the impressive, massive mechanisms of the Dewamenet Empire from its height, which were used to help give the Asha new life upon the collapse of the Allorn Empire.
The Dwarven Empire was the most sophisticated subterranean society in Aloria for centuries before the Cataclysm, perhaps even rivaling the advanced technology of the Meraic and their own underground storehouses. Made up of several Holds, the Empire was isolated for years before contact first with Ailor, and then with Altalar, changed the very nature of the Dwarves forever. Coming to shun the surface, the great entrance towns to their Holds were abandoned as the Race dug even deeper into the earth. There, they found the Dakkar, and unleashed hell upon their world through a mere accident that earned them eternal ire from these beings. In rapid succession, two Holds fell, and gradually, the Dwarven Empire as it was known came to an end. The ancient glory of the Dwarven people is something those remaining can largely only imagine now.
The Hedrylli Empire was a scourge of the seas in the wake of the weakened naval power of the Allorn Empire. Founded in Ellador, the Empire based itself upon Sea-Lords raiding out across the world to bring glory and wealth back to the king and the homeland. They raided far and wide, with bases across the northern reaches of Aloria, and even the Cataclysm did not end their activities. While there was indeed some disruption, parts of the nation back in Ellador sunk into the sea, it was all weathered well. The true end came with the Vampire Wars, and the land, and manpower lost in this have never been recovered by modern Hedrylli. Today the glories of the Hedrylli Empire can be found in the epics of the Kingdom of Hedryll and strewn about southeastern Ellador.
The Essa Empire was once a major political entity on the world stage, a close second to the Regalian Empire and the Songaskian Masaya. Founded with the union of the Slizzar and Allar together on Hadar, its Slizzar leader Empress Mananya-Manya sought to birth a great nation from the splintered Slizzar and divided Allar of the various regional Chrysant Kingdoms. But the Regalian Empire, seeking a way to escape its pessimism, chose to go to war with the Essa Empire in the brutal Chrysant War, as they worried about a Naylar-dominated future. The campaign saw the systematic destruction of hundreds of settlements and miles of natural terrain. Today the Empire is destroyed, with its former member states largely disolved into new polities which often follow the directs of the Regalian Empire.
