The Ballista is an ancient weapon dating back to the middle of the Allorn Empire. It was originally created as a means to keep the Ailor slaves working in the field, knowing that a tower manned by their Nelfin masters could shoot a bolt at them with precision if they attempted to run or cause an insurrection. When the Empire disintegrated, the technology spread to the Ailor and Qadir, who adapted the technology to be operated in a non-magical manner, much to the chagrin of the Altalar. It is obtainable by any state with access to wood, iron or steel, and a hammer to fashion it together and for repairs.

History

Due to the egoism of the original Central Altalar inventor, who assumed his invention was so great that he would forever be remembered even if he didn’t write down who invented it, there is no truly verified record of the rightful creator. Because of this egregious oversight in recordkeeping, there are to this day multiple claims to creating the Ballista, maintained by the claimants’ descendants. However, the two most credible claims are by Ciélù’llön, a scholar who resided in the grand Academy of Rie his whole life, and Nänéc’ùjöllä, an amateur engineer who relied heavily on Magic just as his contemporaries did. When the Empire fell, and the former slaves began establishing their own states, one of the abandoned towers that held a Ballista fell within a new state’s boundaries. Although not knowing magic, the Daendroque broke it apart and began theorizing how to build one without needing magic. After the Cataclysm ended and the world began to settle down, Ferr-Iron came through trade with the Regalian Archipelago; using this to reinforce the wood, the Daendroque finally achieved the creation of a non-magical Ballista, which was immediately studied and replicated by the burgeoning Regalian Empire to use for it’s conquests and defense.

While this occurred through the decades and centuries after the fall of the Altalar’s Empire, the Kathar seized an entire foundry dedicated to producing the magical weapons during the chaos. Because they knew and utilized Magic at a similar level to the Central Altalar, they did not need to break it down. Thusly, the Kathar have had the advantage of over a century to improve on the Ballista with their designs, resulting in the Scorpion Ballista: an extremely lethal and rapid variant to the ancient standard Ballista.

Procurement/Construction

The heavy Ballista is reinforced with Ferr-Iron or Steel and has no wheels to move around; since the early to middle 200’s, heavy Ballistas’ stands are hammered into the ground of a city wall and is used for defense in sieges. Because of the metal reinforcement, especially at the tip where the arrow bolt begins, defenders can dip the large arrowheads in oil and set fire to it without risking the flames catching on the wooden parts of the Ballista, leading to much death and chaos for the attacking forces.

With the Scorpion Ballista, everything is different. Fitted to suit only the Kathar and their style of Magic, the Scorpion is made out of bones, just like their ships. Built slightly larger than even the heavy Ballista, the Kathar type gets its name from its creator’s use of scorpion poison on the tip of the arrow bolts. While standard Ballistae always have a seal imprinted in the wood or metal by the manufacturer, the Scorpion bones are etched with Kathar and Void script, allowing the Void-worshipping people to celebrate their faith and instill fear in their opponents.

Characteristics

Physical Characteristics

There are presently three distinct types of Ballistae: Heavy, Light, and Scorpion. The frames for both heavy and light Ballistae are the same in that they both utilize some form of wood, typically Royal Oak, and possess a vertical stand with a horizontal arrow facing one direction and appears similar to the modern crossbow. After the frame, all similarity between the two ends with the light variant remaining fully wooded and built with wheels, rendering it mobile and easier to mobilize on the battlefield.

Application

All Ballistae require at least a three-man team to operate the engine effectively: for the light class with wheels, all three are needed to push it. Since the light class is entirely made of wood, it packs a far weaker punch in comparison to the heavy and Scorpion classes, as a result, it is typically used for mobile field artillery on the battlefield.

When emplaced and ready to fire, the first man on the right of the releaser loads the bolt into a groove filed in the wood. Once placed, the second man to the left begins to turn the gear with a handle and pulls the arrow back into a state of tautness. Finally, the releaser aims the Ballista either up or down and when ready, lifts his hands off of the handles, letting the string that holds the bolt taught to go and quickly losing the bolt as the other two hold the Ballista in place with handles on their respective side. While the two don’t necessarily have to hold it in place, there is otherwise a little recoil that over hours of receiving it can damage muscles in the releaser’s arm and shoulders.

For the heavy defense of a wall, the same procedure is used. However, with the Ballista nailed to the ground, there is less worry for recoil and greater speed to aiming since with it being hammered in one place, it requires a swivel where the vertical stand and the horizontal arrow meet. Therefore, depending on the style of the wall on which it is placed, a heavy Ballista can theoretically have a swivel range and Killzone of 180 degrees.

The Scorpion class constitutes a mixture of both heavy and light elements. While larger than the heavier style, the Scorpion also possesses wheels to allow for mobility. This has resulted in Kathar walls being noticeably thicker because of the Ballista having both wheels and recoil, therefore needing more space in the rear as it moves backward after a shot. After a Scorpion moves backward, the entire crew must push it back into its forward position, but because of the heavyweight, the Kathar crew number five instead of three.

Trivia

  • The most skilled, strong, and experienced crew of a Ballista can release a bolt a minute!
  • The Central Altalar still use Magic to release their bolts, giving it as it is loosed a push of wind to maximize speed.
  • A Kathar fort near the Kathar-Altalar border was made with a larger version of an archer’s murder hole for it’s Ballistae, protecting them from attack as they kill from the safety of the inside.
