The Bugutza is a creature very few people would ever even consider to exist on Aloria. A large grub creature the size of a man’s arm, the insect has been a source of food for the Naylar inhabitants of the island for years, making it an integral part of their cuisine and thus, their culture.

First Recorded Encounter

When Slizzar first arrived on Tzassa, then known as Osstissa, they were quick to search the jungled island for resources. Early in the island’s history, a group of Slizzar hunters were moving through the jungle at night as it rained when they came upon a clearing. Stopping to get their bearing, they then observed, emerging from the earth, a large and long white creature that began to wriggle into the thick brush. They then killed and took it with them to their village the next day, where it was cooked and eaten to much enjoyment by those present. It was then named "Bugutza", a corruption of the Slizzar words meaning "fat" and "grub".

Current Status

The Bugutza still remain plentiful on Tzassa, often able to be found after rain in clearings where they have come out from the earth they live in. The creature is viewed as an excellent meal by the island’s Naylar populace and is hunted yet not so extensively as to threat the Bugutza's existence.

Characteristics

The Bugutza’s size is rather consistent with all members of the species. Their body ranges 2.6 to 3.1 feet (80 to 100 centimeters) in length and is rather fat, often being about 8 to 12 inches in diameter at the midsection. They have two pairs of insectoid legs emerging from the lower sides of the body close to the head. These heads are small, generally in a shade of brown with two feelers above that and a pair of small black pincers to break down food. They often have a beige or whitish hue to the rest of their bodies and a weak banding is around the creature from end to end. They move simply, crawling forward and slightly contracting their bodies as well. This means though that they do not move quickly.

Notable Physical Traits

  • Bugutza Flesh: The flesh of the Bugutza is rather meaty, making it an ideal meal for the Naylar populace of the Empire of T’zassa. Often paired with fruits and basic flavorings, it is key part of their diets as they do not have other large meat-providing animals.

Origin and Diversity

The grubs have lived for centuries on their island homeland. Some speculate that the Cataclysm is responsible for their rather large size yet this still remains uncertain. Due to Tzassa’s isolation from other Naylar states and groups in the Hadar Island Chain, they have not been traded or moved from their current and singular location.

Life Span and Development

The Bugutza normally lives for up to four years in the jungles of Tzassa, yet their natural life span is six. Once they hatch from their egg, the dozens of larvae (each about the size of a normal earthworm) will go to the surface to find food. They fully mature at the age of one and begin to get fatter soon afterward and have the ability to reproduce at three. To grow, they eat plants on the surface or the roots of trees underground. They die mostly due to hunters searching for them as a meal for the local Naylar populace.

Mental Overview

The Bugutza have no sighs of higher intelligence than the basic animal instincts of eating, breathing, survival and reproduction. They do not stay by their young, leaving them in their eggs sacs to hatch and survive on their own. However, hunters must be wary to not pick up the creature or get near it's mouth as it will latch on fiercely and only death will release its grasp.

Territory and Groupings

They are solitary creatures, uncaring if other Bugutza are in the same area of dirt they are. These areas often have holes where the creature burrows down into the dirt yet can easily be confused as belonging to other creatures.

Trivia

  • The eggs of the Bugutza are another delicacy yet are difficult to find, due to often being laid deeper in the earth than the normal level Bugutza live at.
  • Even if stabbed through the body, Bugutzas will continue to live, and only once the head is crushed will it die.
  • Some Bugutza larvae climb trees to get at the leaves high up and grow in the trees, yet once they reach a certain size, they cannot sustain the position and fall, often to their deaths.
  • Although non-Naylar races are able to digest Bugutza meat without any further risk, most see its taste as horrible and gruesome.
