Throughout the Viridian Order’s three centuries of existence, there have been numerous Grandmasters at the helm of leadership. While some were silently competent and had their names passed from the public consciousness, there remain several others who cemented their legacies into the Viridian identity, and Knighthood overall. Below is a list of the most prominent Grandmasters of the Viridian Order, from its founding to the present day.

This page is considered Expanded Lore, meaning it is not required reading for a roleplay experience on MassiveCraft but can be used to add additional depth and content to Roleplay.

Jonas Cadar

  • Jonas Cadar founded the Viridian Order, becoming its first Grandmaster following the Five Family Rebellion.
  • As patriarch of one of the Five Families, Jonas was known as the military mind of the group and was given permission to control the military sector of the Regalian Empire by Theomar I following his ascension to the throne.
  • Jonas was responsible for laying down the military doctrine of the Viridian Order, including its strict recruitment and training practices. He was also responsible for creating the Hohenfels Council and the overall structure of the Knight ranks.
  • Rather than allow the Grandmaster position to become hereditary within House Cadar, Jonas resigned from his position, allowing his successor to be elected by the Elders of the Hohenfels Council -a practice which has continued to present.

Julien de Montverrat

  • Julien de Montverrat was the first Ithanian Grandmaster of the Order, taking up the position during the reign of Emperor Leomar I.
  • Julien was seen as a weak Grandmaster, as he was unable to see the moral decay that had infiltrated the Viridian Order which had led to several assassinations of Emperors and other high-profile figures at court.
  • Julien was only made aware of the Viridian Coup Attempt after it had been foiled by the five future founders of the Bloodcast Order. In atonement, he fell upon his own sword, leaving the Grandmaster position to the sole surviving Viridian Elder who was not part of the plot.
  • Julien de Montverrat is remembered as a warning to future Grandmasters to never grow blind to the actions of subordinates, and that internal policing is necessary to thwart moral decay.

Yvrize Chattelois

  • Yvrize Chattelois was the second Ithanian Grandmaster of the Order, serving as Grandmaster during the reign of Emperor Allamaria I.
  • Yvrize is well-known for writing a series of essays called the Treatises of Charlemois, proclaiming that knights should subscribe to a written code of honor, rather than an unwritten, metaphorical code that has been the norm at the time.
  • As the Allamarian Legal Reforms were taking place simultaneously, Yvrize’s essays were quite popular during the era and culminated in the Common Knight Code.
  • Yvrize Chattelois is fondly remembered by every Regalian Knightly Order as the creator of the Common Knight Code, as it finally put to parchment what a Knight must strive for.

Karl von Terwer

  • Karl von Terwer was both the first Wirtem, and the first Half-Eronidas, Grandmaster of the Viridian Order, leading during the reign of Emperor Allestrain I.
  • Karl was mostly known by his moniker “The Flaming Sword” due to his blade utilizing an alchemical substance that caused it to alight once drawn.
  • Karl fought during the Nordskagger Wars, where he saw the deaths of both Emperor Allestrain and Arch-Chancellor Alexander the Giant. He later met his end during the Purple Bleeding, where he was killed during a battle against rebellious forces.
  • Karl von Terwer is remembered for his unwavering loyalty to the Emperor as even though the Purple Bleeding was unpopular, a Viridian Knight should always serve the Emperor chiefly.

Jeanne d’Arcoulais

  • Jeanne d’Arcoulais was the first and only female Grandmaster of the Order, leading it during the start of the Seasonal Emperors period.
  • Jeanne was a contemporary of Rianne Cadar, the decorated Regalian tactician and last head of the House Cadar’s mainline, and shared similar views regarding the role of women within the military.
  • Jeanne was initially refused entry into the Viridian Order due to her gender, which prompted her to write the essay “Treatise of Arcèn” calling for the inclusion of women within the Viridians. This led to reforms which saw her admitted, eventually rising to the position of Grandmaster.
  • Jeanne is known for breaking down the gender barrier within the Viridian Order, allowing anyone who was willing to become a knight with equal respect to their peers.

Franz Herdeenz

  • Franz was the successor to Grandmaster d’Arcoulais, serving through the reign of Emperor Vilgemar I and into the start of Justinian II’s.
  • Due to Ailor aging, Franz is the first Grandmaster that many of the oldest of Viridian Knights remember as a leader during their training (save for the Elves who knew many others).
  • Franz would’ve been known as a forgotten Grandmaster had it not been for his actions during the Drachenwald Crisis. Siding with the Regalian State, he ultimately met his end at the Battle of Lausitz.
  • Franz is often compared to Karl von Terwer, as both Grandmasters met their end in rebellions against the Regalian State, and both were willing to die because of it.

Johann Bleppe-Kustenau

  • Johann Bleppe-Kustenau was Grandmaster of the Viridian Order following the Drachenwald Crisis, until his assassination following the end of the Chrysant War.
  • Johann was the most politically active Grandmaster of the Viridians, a necessity given the rise of the corrupt Regalian Senate. He frequently spent hours meeting with senators in order to ensure the Viridian Order’s funding remained the same.
  • Johann also plotted with the Dragon Faction to reinstate Justinian II’s absolute authority, using the Viridian Order during the Chrysant War as a propaganda machine for the Ivrae Dynasty.
  • Johann Bleppe-Kustenau is remembered as a Grandmaster whose political dealings were ultimately a necessary evil in order to keep the Viridian Order stable during the Regalian Pessimism.

Jean-Baptiste Tuillerons

  • Jean-Baptiste Tuillerons was the last Viridian Grandmaster of the Ivrae Dynasty's reign and saw the rise of the Kade Dynasty to the Imperial Seat.
  • Jean-Baptiste saw several assaults on the original Hohenfels Castle (which was on the Crown Isle before its name and Chapter moved to Calemberg) during the final years of his life during several occupations of the capital, each siege causing greater damage to the defenses.
  • He met his end alongside the Hohenfels Council during the Deathling Crisis, where he led a last stand against the occupation force to allow dozens of Squires to flee into the countryside.
  • Jean-Baptiste Tuillerons is revered as a martyr to all living Viridians, especially the youngest knights, who were saved by his and the other Viridians’ sacrifice as he ensured that the Order would live on after his fall.

Bohemund II von Drachenburg

  • Bohemund II von Drachenburg-Ehrenhof (a cadet branch of the Drachenburgs) is the current Grandmaster of the Viridian Order since 305 AC and worked alongside Emperor Cedromar to revive it following the Deathling Crisis.
  • Bohemund is known for moving the Hohenfels Chapter from Regalia to Calemberg, which now serves as the current administrative center of the Viridians. The Tyrian Chapter is built near the ruins of the original Hohenfels Citadel, which was created by Emperor Cedromar, who served as Co-Grandmaster during his reign.
  • Bohemund is one of the most traveled Grandmasters, spending time between all Viridian Chapters to ensure the Squires are trained adequately for service (as many of them had to pause their training during the Deathling Crisis, and many of the Elders at each Chapter have just started teaching.)
  • All current Viridian Squires underwent training during Bohemund’s tenure as Grandmaster, making him the first and only Grandmaster to many new knights.
