Small and aquatic, maerrow are predominantly seen in swamplands of New Ceardia, and will very rarely leave these climates unless they’re migrating to new swamps. The maerrow are natural scavengers, with long fingers that can easily grasp onto objects under or above water. These beasts were only recently found, and even more recently, hunted near extinction when a surge of maerrow-related deaths begun to occur.

Physical Description
Maerrow stand little less than the height of a Dwarf, and weigh very little due to their small, almost skeletal form. They are strikingly similar to Mer and Reef Maiar, yet have been classified by Regalian Historians as a separate animal. Most maerrow have scales ranging from various shades of blue (dark to light), yet some have a greener tinge to camouflage themselves in their environment. These beasts bear sharp teeth under their scaly lips. The maerrow have no hair covering their bodies, but often drape themselves in swamp plants to hide themselves from their prey. They have a single, large fin running down the tops of their heads, a pair of fins protruding from their cheekbones, and longer, hydrodynamic fins along their forearms. Their arms are long, dragging along the ground as they walk, and have four webbed fingers on the end of them. These fingers have a good grip both underwater and on the surface, as they are natural scavengers.

Natural Habitat
History
Maerrow are commonly found in the New Ceardian swamps. It is very rare to find maerrow outside of those climates. It is almost as rare to see them inside their habitat, as they often flee to hide in their underwater nests when larger animals approach. They will very rarely attack anything larger than them, due to their jittery and fearful nature. They are intolerant of overly cold weather and have little body fat to keep them warm, thus they must  migrate to warmer climates in winters. This migration period is when Maerrow are most commonly sighted, as their normally reclusive and shy nature is overtaken by their urge to find warmer waters
.The first reports of Maerrow originate  from the swamp dwellers of New Ceardia where fishermen often lost their catches to groups of Maerrow Hunters. Due to this, the locals grew to become hostile towards the Maerrow, often striking them and knocking them away whenever they were seen. In turn, the Maerrows became more adept at hiding and began to trap and kill the fishermen. After a string of Maerrow related deaths, the locals began relentlessly hunting and slaughtering any Maerrow they could find, leading to their near extinction.

Now the Maerrow are a rare sight among their swamp homes, growing more skilled at hiding as they evolved. Few are able to find them, but those detected are often trapped and killed by the hunters.

Physical Appearance
Somewhat shorter than Dwarves, Maerrow are strikingly similar to Mer and Reef Maiar. Despite this, Regalian scholars have deemed them an individual animal. Their small bodies paired with their relatively large lung capacity allows them to stay submerged for extended periods of time, often allowing them to escape predators. Moreover, they harbor small yet sharpened claws able to cut through most fishing nets, benefitting their thievery of fish and captured food. Furthermore, the goblin-like creatures have rows of jagged, yet razor sharp teeth - most often exposed in a sinister grin to onlookers, due to the Maerrow’s lack of lips. Their natural murky brown and dark green sludge-like skin pigmentation provides the perfect camouflage for traversing the swamplands undetected, wading beneath the moss that sits atop the waters.

Diversity
Maerrow have very little difference between specimens, with only the male hunters being slightly taller and having skin that allows for changes in pigmentation so that they are able to conceal themselves. Most oftenly, Maerrow are seen taking on a murky brown and green pigmentation to best conceal themselves in the swampland. However, other Maerrow take on a far more grey and pale white pigmentation when residing in clearer, sunlight exposed waters.

Life Span and Development
Maerrow live fairly short lives of only about twelve years at most. Over the first three years, the Maerrow will slowly grow its teeth and claws in. From then on, the Maerrow will grow to be full size by roughly six or seven years of age. Moreover, as they mature, the Maerrow seem to grow more and more hunched in appearance, thus appearing almost like smaller Dwarven folk in the mistiness of the swamp.

First Recorded Encounter
Mental Overview
The first maerrow to have been sighted was by a Human exploration team working for Regalia, who found them whilst scouting the southern swamplands in eastern New Ceardia. The group found had migrated to the area when the northern cold became too much for them to bear. At first, they were considered Reef Maiar, yet a further investigation a year later found them to be an entirely different animal.
Unruly and certainly unable to be tamed by humans, Maerrow are known as swamp goblins for a good reason. They refuse to follow any commands given to them and cannot be tempted with a reward such as fish or any of their other food sources. Acting on their own accord, a Maerrow is always initially hostile to outsiders, with even the runts of a particular litter brashly slashing forwards to defend their young, or simply for another meal.

History
Territory and Groupings
Maerrow have largely been disregarded as feral and wild, too energetic to be kept as pets and very stubborn against the orders of Humans. However, an increase of maerrow-related deaths and drownings have prompted humans to kill maerrow on sight, leading to the near extinction of the beasts. Being the natural hiders they are, they survived and continue to live in small communities in the swamps.
Maerrow started as large communities, however, with humans hunting and exterminating them, Maerrow were forced to accommodate a more hostile and reclusive behavior. Now the swamp pests dwell in small communities, with certain larger males acting as the hunters for the dens, bringing food and other necessities back home to the more defensive, home caring females and weaker males.

Mental Overview

Unruly and certainly unable to be tamed by humans, Maerrow are known as swamp goblins for a good reason. They refuse to follow any commands given to them and cannot be tempted with a reward such as fish or any of their other food sources. Acting on their own accord, a Maerrow is always initially hostile to outsiders, with even the runts of a particular litter brashly slashing forwards to defend their young, or simply for another meal.

Territory and Groupings

Maerrow started as large communities, however, with humans hunting and exterminating them, Maerrow were forced to accommodate a more hostile and reclusive behavior. Now the swamp pests dwell in small communities, with certain larger males acting as the hunters for the dens, bringing food and other necessities back home to the more defensive, home caring females and weaker males.

Trivia

 • Maerrow are largely unfit for the consumption of most races. Not only do they have a general lack of substantial meat, but their constant exposure to stagnant and dirty swamp water has caused their flesh to become foul. The few brave or foolish enough to consume Maerrow meat have come down with food poisoning.
 • Maerrow wait for their prey to die in their traps before eating them to conserve their own energy. They often divide meals equally between their communities.
