Honey Balls have long been a plant native to Drowdar, Ellador and Fendarfelle. Growing on the forest floor, they are often filled with a sweet sugary goo. Known to the wider world when Fendarfelle was reached, settlements make good money selling the fungi for Regalian nobility to use.
History
The Honey Ball has only existed in its current form for the last three centuries. The original plant grew on Drowda in ancient times, but spread to Northern Ellador and Northern Fendarfelle. However, after the Cataclysm, it mutated into it’s current form. The first to discover this form were the Drowdar who lived on the Forbidden Continent after the destructive event. Drowdar in their warrior ways, ignored the plant due it’s equivalent to a dessert, however the Isldar in Northern Ellador found the mushroom nearly a century later, in 89 AC. Since then, only their priestesses and matriarchal leaders have been known to eat it. On special occasions however, some male Isldar are allowed to eat then if they perform some great feat or attend a special ceremony. Ailor didn’t come into contact with the plant until much later. When Regalia sought to colonize newly discovered lands in 260 AC, colonists in Fendarfelle discovered Honey Balls as they moved across the continent. They initially disregarded the plant, but after discovering it’s sweet inside, they have since made a small market of shipping it off to Regalia. Now, the plant is regarded as a delicacy by many and the small income it generates for Fendarfelle colonists is sure to expand with time.
Appearance
Honey Ball are marble-sized, rounded spheres of a glossy purple hue. They have a flaky coating and two layers of crust on the surface. Underneath the skin lie rows of thin spores, held within a gooey, honey-like pale blue liquid. It is anchored to the ground by a small black root. Honey balls often grow at the base of trees, in clusters of ten to fifteen.
Uses and Abilities
Honey Balls are most often used as a high-end ingredient in succulent culinary goods. The sweet blue substance is most often used in upscale candies or candied fruits. It can also be used in glazes or sauces. The crust is inedible as is the root.
Trivia
Fendarfelle colonists gave the Honey Ball its name after the taste of the goo and shape of the mushroom, however they coined a second nickname: Sea Eyes, after its coloration and shape of the fungus.
Many animals also enjoy Honey Balls, and some more territorial species are known to guard patches of the fungi for their own use.
Fendarfelle is a newer colony in Regalia, and so shipments of Honey Balls are a commodity for the higher class to buy.
