Aloria is a diverse and vibrant place, and has hundreds of spoken and written languages. This page should guide you in all of the languages you may choose your character to speak. Please keep in mind that some races are better than others at learning and speaking some languages, and that some languages aren't even able to be learnt by individuals who did not grow up learning them.
The various Races and Cultures of Aloria have many different languages that are all unique in their own way. Many of these Languages have a real-life counterpart to allow it to be easily compared to something tangible in our own world and assist players in knowing what people are saying should they decide to actually write out another Language. Most, however, commonly use <Language>, <Lang> or, <La> before their message to symbolize the fact that they are speaking in another language to their peers. Below you will find a list of tags that you may use, should your character choose to speak in another language so that the players around you know what language you’re talking in.
:Please keep in mind that for easy access to Roleplayers, the most frequently spoken—and easiest to learn—languages is Common, which is a 1:1 transfer of American English into Roleplay so that all Roleplayers can communicate with each other.

:Despite the fact that some Alorian languages are based heavily on IRL languages from Earth, it is always best (and preferred by everyone around you) that you type everything in English, and use a language tag (<ME> for Modern Elven, etc.) to denote that your character is speaking a different language. ==Nelfin Languages==
The Nelfin Languages are a distinct grouping of Languages based around the Nelfin people, who originated with the Altalar. Through time, Magic, and shifting Geography, their Languages evolved into a unique collection that spans a variety of speech patterns.
*Middle Altalar: Based on no IRL Language and minimally spoken by the Altalar. This Language has fallen out of favor since the collapse of the Allorn Empire and the Altalar that use it are isolated groups such as the Sundial Altalar.
*Modern Altalar: Based on no IRL Language and spoken by the Altalar, Cielothar, Avanthar, Yanar and those Races who deal with them or who have populations in or near their territory.
*Sulvaley Elven: Based on IRL Arabic and spoken by the Isldar. The differences between this and Faraddi are minimal.
*Sihndar Dialect: Based on no IRL Language and spoken by the Sihndar. The Language produces an IRL Australian accent when the Sihndar speak Common.
*Plains Elven: Based on no IRL Language and spoken by the Avanthar, Cielothar and those Yanar who live in the plains of southern Daen.
*Kathar Elven Dialect: Based on no IRL Language and spoken by the Kathar. This is not Void Script, which is a separate and unique ritual written Language learned though Kathar Ritualism.

Other Race Languages
*Vashkularr: Based on no IRL Language and spoken by the Orcs. It is a very guttural Language with a limited vocabulary, which results in them either Orcifying Common words or switching to Common altogether.
*Zasta: Based on no IRL Language and spoken by the Allar and Slizzar. It frequently makes use of Z’s, S’s, and L’s and is smoothly spoken. Those without the special tongue of the two Naylar Races cannot speak it properly (though understood) while the written script of Zasta can be understood by those who seek to.
*Zcorr: Based on no IRL Language and spoken by the Varran. It frequently makes use of Z’s and O’s with a guttural tone. The Language makes use of a Varran’s tail and so is difficult if not impossible for non-tailed Races to understand it fully.
*Oortaal: Based on no IRL Language and spoken by the Url. The Language is exclusive to the Url as it also possesses a unique mental aspect granted by the Oortal Worms, meaning that only Url can translate what has been said.
*Shalota: Based on no IRL Language and spoken by the Maraya. It makes frequent use of L’s and M’s, producing a smooth tone of speech some have compared to the Nelfin Languages.

Extinct Languages
*Seraph Dialect: Based on no IRL Language and was the Language of the long-extinct Seraph. The remains of their Language are scarce but also hard to learn, as they are steeped in Magic and some claim that non-Mages can never know the full depth of the Language. Regardless, some Language experts can speak fragmented words from the Dialect and roughly translate the Language’s written form. Note: An expert is someone who has spent 30 Proficiency Points on Linguistics Knowledge.
*Twi Dialects: Based on no IRL Language and was the Language of the ancient Altalar. Used in their earliest years, both forms (Twi’Alac spoken tongue and Twi’von Script), were extremely crude compared to modern Languages, the Script being painted on cave walls. Some believe that the Language was so crude in speech because there was an external, Magic component, but this has yet to be proven.
*Ancient Altalar: Based on no IRL Language and was the Language of the ancient Altalar after the Twi Dialects. The Language saw widespread use after the Darkening (when the Dialects were used) and was extraordinarily complex. Their use of long-winded metaphor for even simple colors and advanced grammatical syntax were eventually abandoned for Middle Altalar. What Ancient Altalar remains exists only in ancient written records of the Altalar spread across Daen and The Far West. Regardless, some Language experts can speak fragmented sentences from the Language and translate the Language’s written form. Note: An expert is someone who has spent 30 Proficiency Points on Linguistics Knowledge.
*(Old) Ceardian Dialect: Based on IRL Indo European Languages and was the Language of the ancient Ailor of Ceardia. Over the centuries, Common also emerged on Ceardia and gradually displaced Old Ceardian. The Language is now only spoken by sparse and isolated pockets of Ailor in the highlands of Gallovia in the Regalian Archipelago, and will likely be rendered entirely extinct within a matter of years.
*Proto-Regalian: Based on IRL Latin and was the Language of several pre-Cataclysm Ailor groups in the Regalian Archipelago. The Language now only survives in very old documents of the Regalian Empire and the names of what few ancient buildings remain in the Archipelago as it died off in favor of Alt-Anglia, Alt-Regalian and Common.
*Tunge: Based on IRL Danish and was the Language of eastern Velheim Ailor located in Essalonia and, to a lesser extent, southeastern Ellador. The form of speech was most common in the endlessly warring nations of Arlora and Torse, but the events of the Battle of Curag Fields and Bone Horror Crisis has greatly depleted those lands of living populations. In addition, the Velheim and Ceardian-based population of this region have largely cast off their old Language in favor of Common or Skodje, tongues “untainted” by the foul acts and accursed strife that led to the “rise of damned Undead” (the Bone Horrors).

Revision as of 18:05, 9 June 2019

The various Races and Cultures of Aloria have many different languages that are all unique in their own way. Many of these Languages have a real-life counterpart to allow it to be easily compared to something tangible in our own world and assist players in knowing what people are saying should they decide to actually write out another Language. Most, however, commonly use <Language>, <Lang> or, <La> before their message to symbolize the fact that they are speaking in another language to their peers. Below you will find a list of tags that you may use, should your character choose to speak in another language so that the players around you know what language you’re talking in.

 • It is important to note that Languages have a special set of rules. Common is free for all to know. Your character is allowed to know the dominant language of both parents only by default. So if your character's mother was Ithanian and their father Varran, then they are allowed to know the Varran and Ithanian Languages. If both parents have the same dominant Language, only that Language is learned. Language dominance is always dictated by the dominant Culture, not the dominant Language being used. Any further additional Languages cost 6 points in Linguistics Proficiency each.
