Over the course of the Second Skagger War between the young Regalian Empire, its Wirtemcaller allies, and the large coalition of Velheim opposed to them, many items changed hands between the victors and the vanquished, or found a new legacy with new owners. When Velheim die, they are buried in a crypt in a Helbolwen, tended to carefully by the Fornoss priests to make sure they do not arise as undead. The Barrow Mace once had a Velheim name, perhaps, but as one of many weapons looted from the pillaging of a Helbolwen by Regalian soldiers in their northward march across the other side of the line of combat, it lost its distinctiveness. This weapon is still the personal property of the soldier who originally stole it, no longer living, but yet holding tight to his prized trophy of conquest.

Appearance

The Barrow Mace is a Skagger wrought-iron weapon, a carefully decorated thing with a fabric-wrapped hilt and inscribed runes around the bottom of the spherical head. It is not spiked like later maces, simply a burnished ball meant to shatter by striking. Whichever warrior originally bore it tied an orange ribbon just above its brass pommel cap, which has at this point become tattered and tarnished with time so that it resembles more a rust-red color with the pigment faded. The orange ribbon and orientation of the runes with curling Abyss-script influenced edges suggests that its bearer held faithful to the Vola in life, and looked for his blessings in warfare from Ubhan.

Permanent Mechanics

The Barrow Mace is a Knight Collectible Artifact. As an artifact, there are several rules associated with Artifact Ownership, see Artifact Page. It also provides the following Mechanics:

  • Token of War: The Barrow Mace is obviously an old Velheim design, being carried by a non-Velheim person, that immediately suggests grave robbing. It is an immediate token of favour with people who dislike the Velheim as a symbol of someone who has crushed them in combat and taken from them, while it produces the exact opposite effect with the Velheim themselves, who consider it a cause for immense disfavour and scorn.
