Brightedge, Bitter Blessing, is a weapon of Ordial Cultist origins created by the faithful of Avarael, the builder of traps and mazes to ensnare the unwitting. Legend has it that the edge of the scythe was originally one of the blades of a grandiose pair of scissors used by the craftsman to cut rope with which to bind his siege equipment. The assorted tools of Avarael have all been lost, with legend suggesting that the one who assembles all of them may be able to divine a plan long ago laid by the trapped Ailor to free himself, although there are an equal amount of suggestions that he is just a forgetful builder who leaves things behind when he is done on work sites. His hammer, his chisel, and his wood-cutting axe have all circulated throughout the Ordial-worshiping community, but the scissor-edge scythe is a newcomer to the collection that has yet to make a name for itself.
The scythe Brightedge, also known as the Parting Gift, was created by the former Death God Iorwerth. Legend has it that the scythe's blade was originally one of the blades of a grand pair of scissors used by Iorwerth to cut rope. The other blade was used to create the Artifact Blackedge. Brightedge changed hands frequently until it became owned by Emil Velkov in 311 AC. Velkov led a quest to free Iorwerth from the Malefica by stealing his husband Cadell's soul from it. In 312 AC, the quest came to a successful conclusion, with Iorwerth being reunited with Cadell and Brightedge being cleansed after gaining the Dragonsoul of the Draconist God Gaia. Brightedge originally was a Grim Artifact, but was cleansed when Gaia ascended.

==Origins==
==Description==
It is held that the oversized scissors of Avarael were broken in two by believers to create the twin weapons Brightedge and Blackedge, named very literally for being the top and bottom halves of the differently colored implement. Most of Avarael's tools only started to be recovered around 290 AC as mortals took an increasing interest in him, with this one in particular reaching the public eye in 305 AC when Ordial religious independently verified its nature after buying both it and its sibling from a disreputable underground Elven market. Unlike for example Elysian, Brightedge is not an object of reverence or religious significance for Ordial Cultists, but it has connotations of association with Avarael, and this alone makes it worth hanging onto for some people.
Brightedge is a Weapon Artifact, which means it cannot be wielded at the same time as other Weapon Artifacts by the same owner. It is a wicked-edged scythe with a blade sharpened and angled towards one side. The entire edge gleams as if it is made of tin and starlight, with mottled, pale Damascus patterns appearing when it is tilted and light spills over it. The former scissor blade is secured with sturdy ties to a long handle of solid gray Leystone. Burning, pale lilac Draconic runes are etched vertically down the length of the handle. At the top of the handle, a leather strap is tied tightly, and attached to it is a smithed silver Breizh good luck charm.

Brightedge is a wicked-edged scythe with a blade sharpened and angled towards one side, the whole edge gleaming like it is made of tin and starlight, with mottled green Damascus patterns when it is tilted and light spills over it. The former scissor blade is lashed with sturdy ties to a long handle of painted black wood, with Ordial runes of significance whittled out down its length with a knife by its previous holders. One side is left blank, for its current wielder to add their own. It adjusts itself to the height of its size of its wielder, but the size it assumes with taller wielders is closer to its true one.

OriginIorwerth
TypeWeapon

Description

Artifact Mechanics

Artifact Mechanics are split between Permanent Mechanics, Sparked Mechanics, and Sparked Combat Mechanics. Permanent Mechanics are always available to the wielder of the Artifact. Sparked Mechanics and Sparked Combat Mechanics are only available if the Artifact has an Artifactspark. Sparked Combat Mechanics are noted separately, because this makes them easier to find, but they are no different from Sparked Mechanics in general. For more information on Artifactsparks, read the Resources Page. For Rules on Artifact ownership, see the Artifacts Page.

Permanent Mechanics

  • The Artifact's wielder can see backward in time (coordinate with other players to tell their past) or see glimpses of possible futures in multi-time thread theory (just make them up, there are thousands of possible futures). Brightedge in particular shows the wielder glimpses of possible calamity, disaster, or doom that might befall a person, thus allowing the wielder to warn them of their spiral to destruction.

Sparked Mechanics

  • Brightedge's wielder can choose 3 Free Packs from the following Categories: Magic Point Buy, Melee Point Buy, Mounted Point Buy. (If Mounted Point Buy is Chosen, Brightedge summons a Spectral Steed from the Leylines).
  • The Artifact wielder can summon a Bonecrypt Gateway to the Bonecrypt Realm (an Instanced Region) which is one of the buildings that Gaia was forced to make for the Malefica, but was released from its control. The portal can only exist in one place at once, but the wielder can request it to be moved in a Discord Ticket. Additionally, insofar available manpower stretches, the Artifact wielder may request Gaia to give them a quest that takes place inside this Bonecrypt Realm to serve the Dragons or Gaia specifically (who also has some loyalties to Regalia, The Breizh people, or the Aelrrigan Order).
  • If the Artifact wielder's romantic partner is in the same Combat scene as them, the romantic Partner gains +2 Attack Stat (breaking Cap to 11) while within Emote Range of the Artifact wielder and active in Combat.
  • Brightedge as a weapon represents Gaia's righteous freedom. Brightedge grants the wielder +2 Attack Stat (breaking Cap up to 11) while using Attack Emotes on Evolists and Mortis Cult Worshippers. Additionally, even when not attacking Characters of these faiths, the wielder's Attack Dice Roll Minimum is set to 3.

Collectible Artifact

Artifacts are very cool, and make a Character super powerful. That being said, due to circumstances of Roleplay, a Character may end up holding onto an Artifact for months on end. This is generally not a problem, but we believe that Artifacts because of their uniqueness, should never be held onto in perpetuity by one Player. After a few months, it is time for the next player to be able to enjoy the artifact, and for this reason, Collectibles exist. After 120 days of non-consecutive Artifact ownership, an Artifact is automatically confiscated, and the Player who lost it is given a Collectible. Collectibles are thematically and aesthetically similar to the Artifact, meaning the loss of an Artifact does not visually detract from a Character's established design. However, they cannot hold Artifactsparks and only inherit the Permanent Mechanics from the Artifact they were generated from (including the rules limiting their use). On the other hand, Collectibles can never be stolen from their owner, a Collectible is owned forever, and there is no upper limit to the amount of Collectibles a Character can have, or wield/use at the same time. Collectibles cannot be traded in, though some Events may ask for their sacrifice, destroying the Collectible. To summarize this Artifact's Collectible properties:

  • When this Artifact is exchanged for a Collectible, Brightedge must continue the gift of parting, leaving behind a Brighthope Scythe.
  • The Brighthope Scythe Collectible inherits the second Permanent Mechanic of the Artifact (not the Artifactspark stealing one).
  • While there are several Brighthope Scythes, each looks unique, though should be inspired by the appearance of the Artifact.
