A common plant found across the vast world of Aloria, the Shademarch Mushroom was originally discovered in Daendroc by the Elves and was used in cooking. Humans then found it in the earliest days of their existence and used it in their cooking as well before it’s other effects were discovered. It still used in cooking yet now those evil and good have taken to mass-growing the crop, for it’s two abilities are great draws.
History
The Shademarsh was once a common and simple edible mushroom found in Daendroc. Slaves under the Elven Empire often consumed it as a food source. Following the Cataclysm however, the plant changed. Now possessing malicious characteristics, people who scrounged them in the hope for food were instead poisoned and often died within the hour without assistance. With its new ability, Shademarsh became an easily procured poison for dark intentions. However, after a splurge of purchases in and around the Ithanian Gem Boom, the mushroom was no longer easy to find. Following this, when specimens were found, they were often taken and sold off to other regions of the world. Some of these specimens spread into the wild and so now, hidden in dark and secret corners, continues to grow.

Origins
Appearance
A plant that is thought to have existed back at the time of the Seraph, the shademarsh mushroom was used chiefly by the Nelfin as it grew in large quantities in the natural swamps of Daendroc yet could be found on all continents. As the other races developed further, most of them began to use the mushroom in their cooking. Humans and Nelfin placed it into soups and sauces, the Orcs ate them raw, the Naylar sautèed them to go with various meats. The recently discovered Kleinfolk enjoyed to “stuff” them with spices. Once it was discovered that a smoked shademarsh mushroom was a hallucinogen, it became a favorite of people looking to get away from the troubles of their world and enter a completely warped and often bizarre, care-free one. Yet soon, more astute people began to realize the process that broke down the dried mushroom into fumes was toxic and if smoked over a period of at least a year, the user could die.
Shademarsh Mushrooms are small brown capped mushrooms that stand about five or six inches off of the ground. They rest on a beige stalk that bulges a bit at the bottom. The only feature that gives it away as a poisonous plant is the small, black hair-like fibers that poke out the bottom of the cap, which has a diameter of four inches. The mushrooms themselves grow in clusters of three to ten near the mouths of caves or directly at the roots of swamp trees.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, around the same time as this discovery, it was learned that shademarsh mushrooms could be used as a base in certain healing potions, substituting out a mixture of grasses and small fruits. After several dozen years, the shademarsh mushroom was secured in it’s position as one of the must-have ingredients for alchemists to use in healing potions. At the present, assassins and mercenaries enjoy to use the mushroom to confuse or slowly poison their enemies (which taking a great amount of patience and misdirection) as well as drug addicts for its hallucinogenic properties.  Alchemists still continue to create new and even better healing potions, many using the shademarsh mushroom as a base for their work. Then there are the chefs, who continue to use the fungi as apart of gourmet recipes for it’s rich taste and plentifulness.

Etymology
Uses and Abilities
The original name was given to it by the Nelfin was “Loewandi” and once translated it means “Marsh Fungi”. When the Ailor first began to use they merely called it the “Brown Mushroom” or the “Darkthrive Mushroom” (as it thrived in dark, shady areas). Around the year 11 AC however someone must have made the note that these mushroom grow in the shade in marshes and soon the “Shademarsh Mushroom” name took over as the most commonplace, however it’s two other monikers are still used by those who live in the wilderness.
The Shademarsh Mushroom has two uses, each tied to it’s ability to overdrive the heart and mind with stimuli. One is as a poison to push someone’s mind and heart over the brink. This can be accomplished through eating the mushroom or inhaling the fungus dry. To cure this, the body needs to either vomit and purge the poison from its system or the afflicted person must drink Avetyaben’s Grace. Another more recent use has been as a high end drug, as if taken in the smallest doses, its effects are not lethal. Rather, they produced an elevated heart rate and borderline psychedelic warped visions in it’s users. This is a much less known use and is currently most popular in Daenshore.

Primary Use
Trivia
Originally used in cooking, experimentation by cooks and others brought forth two other available uses, one of it being a strong hallucinogen/poison and the other a base in powerful healing potions
*Experimentation with the fungus is beginning to ramp up amongst alchemists, most notably by a Golden Hand sect known as the Diamond Spine who makes a profit to fund their magic research by dealing with drugs and illegal potions.
*If the mushroom is dried and then burned in a pipe or a small contained space it can cause hallucinations and if continuously exposed to it, can cause death as it is a lethal toxin. However if it is distilled using alchemical techniques, it can become a strong and key base in over a dozen upper tier healing potions.
*Shademarsh Mushrooms were once said to hold water very well, but this myth is entirely false.
*For the first effect, a man named Jared Hawthorne who lived in Havenreach, Ithania who was addicted to Opium. Suffering withdrawal, he decided to smoke some nearby dried shademarsh mushrooms he had stolen. He then discovered the effect and informed his friends and it took off from there. As for the potion base, there was an alchemist by the name of Arthur Ringwald who worked for a mercenary company based in Ellador. He one day mis-made several healing potions when he confused the cut mushrooms for pieces of his apple mixture base. The result was very apparent with them healing people nearly twice as fast as his normal potions did. He then shared the information with other alchemists, turning into what it is today.
*Most races receive similar effects with the only things of note is that the Slizar are more resilient to the poison received from smoking the mushroom and Yanar heal very quickly with healing potions that use the mushroom as their base.
*For the smoking to occur, the mushroom must first be dried for a minimum for three days in a dry location before it can be smoked correctly. For the mushroom to work in healing potions, it must be distilled down, which takes and be the first ingredient in the potion.

Trivia
*More recently, the latest craze in cooking involving the shademarsh mushroom is mushroom soups, originally created in Ithania a dozen years ago, with multiple different variations existing across the land emerging all within the same time period
*Only one known poisoning with the fumes of a shademarsh mushroom has occurred to date. A wealthy merchant bought into his wife’s “relaxment methods” which was meditating as the fumes poured into the room. After nearly a year of the process, he dropped dead and she was going to inherit all his money before she died as well from the same process. Her protection method of placing a cloth bag over her head hadn’t worked and she was just as poisoned as he was.
