A common plant found across the vast world of Aloria, the Shademarch Mushroom was originally discovered in Daendroc by the Elves and was used in cooking. Humans then found it in the earliest days of their existence and used it in their cooking as well before it’s other effects were discovered. It still used in cooking yet now those evil and good have taken to mass-growing the crop, for it’s two abilities are great draws.
History
Shademarsh Mushrooms have a poorly defined history due to going ignored for so long by both the Allorn Empire and likely the Asha, but the destruction of their history makes this difficult to confirm. As the Allorn Empire swelled during the height of their power, with millions of slaves and the natural landscapes of Altaleï and Westwynd increasingly altered by Elven Magic, the Shademarsh Mushroom came into focus as a substance which grew in the swamps, and the dank, dark hovels or cages befitting the slave population. They were edible at this time, and so became a scrounged resource to add to whatever paltry slave meals were given out. However, following the Cataclysm, Shademarsh Mushrooms changed. While they were still edible, they first needed to be cooked, as consuming them raw induced intense stomach pains and could cause a fluttering heart. These negative traits severely impacted the mushroom’s consumption, and many stayed away from it as a result. However, as dark faiths and cults returned to the regions the mushrooms grew in thanks to Kathar migrations away from their homeland in Sileria, the fungus came back into prominence. The Kathar determined a new method for its consumption: drying it and consuming it with water or other liquids to produce strange visions. Considered an altered state of present conscience rather than anything magical like that produced by Avinla Spice, it resulted in the fungus coming back into the conscience of locals. Today, the substance has been spread to other regions of Aloria, both as a part of cuisines, but also for its ability to serve as a narcotic and as a component of dangerous alchemy concoctions. However, it has been cracked down on as an opiate in this second capacity as the Regalian Empire turns against such substances.

Origins
Appearance
A plant that is thought to have existed back at the time of the Seraph, the shademarsh mushroom was used chiefly by the Nelfin as it grew in large quantities in the natural swamps of Daendroc yet could be found on all continents. As the other races developed further, most of them began to use the mushroom in their cooking. Humans and Nelfin placed it into soups and sauces, the Orcs ate them raw, the Naylar sautèed them to go with various meats. The recently discovered Kleinfolk enjoyed to “stuff” them with spices. Once it was discovered that a smoked shademarsh mushroom was a hallucinogen, it became a favorite of people looking to get away from the troubles of their world and enter a completely warped and often bizarre, care-free one. Yet soon, more astute people began to realize the process that broke down the dried mushroom into fumes was toxic and if smoked over a period of at least a year, the user could die.
Shademarsh Mushrooms stand at six inches tall with a cap diameter of four inches. Their stalk is beige, while the cap is a rich brown hue. It has a soft, rubbery texture that is easily broken apart and is distinguishable from other fungi by the short black “hairs” that hang around the rim of the cap. These small growths are easily squashed between one’s fingers, and their exact purpose remains unknown. Most believe they are evidence, or a sign, of whatever mutation or alteration took place within the plant during the Cataclysm, but this is not proven.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, around the same time as this discovery, it was learned that shademarsh mushrooms could be used as a base in certain healing potions, substituting out a mixture of grasses and small fruits. After several dozen years, the shademarsh mushroom was secured in it’s position as one of the must-have ingredients for alchemists to use in healing potions. At the present, assassins and mercenaries enjoy to use the mushroom to confuse or slowly poison their enemies (which taking a great amount of patience and misdirection) as well as drug addicts for its hallucinogenic properties.  Alchemists still continue to create new and even better healing potions, many using the shademarsh mushroom as a base for their work. Then there are the chefs, who continue to use the fungi as apart of gourmet recipes for it’s rich taste and plentifulness.

Etymology
The original name was given to it by the Nelfin was “Loewandi” and once translated it means “Marsh Fungi”. When the Ailor first began to use they merely called it the “Brown Mushroom” or the “Darkthrive Mushroom” (as it thrived in dark, shady areas). Around the year 11 AC however someone must have made the note that these mushroom grow in the shade in marshes and soon the “Shademarsh Mushroom” name took over as the most commonplace, however it’s two other monikers are still used by those who live in the wilderness.

Primary Use
Originally used in cooking, experimentation by cooks and others brought forth two other available uses, one of it being a strong hallucinogen/poison and the other a base in powerful healing potions
*If the mushroom is dried and then burned in a pipe or a small contained space it can cause hallucinations and if continuously exposed to it, can cause death as it is a lethal toxin. However if it is distilled using alchemical techniques, it can become a strong and key base in over a dozen upper tier healing potions.
*For the first effect, a man named Jared Hawthorne who lived in Havenreach, Ithania who was addicted to Opium. Suffering withdrawal, he decided to smoke some nearby dried shademarsh mushrooms he had stolen. He then discovered the effect and informed his friends and it took off from there. As for the potion base, there was an alchemist by the name of Arthur Ringwald who worked for a mercenary company based in Ellador. He one day mis-made several healing potions when he confused the cut mushrooms for pieces of his apple mixture base. The result was very apparent with them healing people nearly twice as fast as his normal potions did. He then shared the information with other alchemists, turning into what it is today.
*Most races receive similar effects with the only things of note is that the Slizar are more resilient to the poison received from smoking the mushroom and Yanar heal very quickly with healing potions that use the mushroom as their base.
*For the smoking to occur, the mushroom must first be dried for a minimum for three days in a dry location before it can be smoked correctly. For the mushroom to work in healing potions, it must be distilled down, which takes and be the first ingredient in the potion.

Uses and Abilities
*More recently, the latest craze in cooking involving the shademarsh mushroom is mushroom soups, originally created in Ithania a dozen years ago, with multiple different variations existing across the land emerging all within the same time period
Shademarsh Mushrooms have three uses. The first is culinary, where the fungus is sauteed, cooked, or otherwise heated, a process widely believed to burn off the poison endemic to the mushroom in the modern day. The second use is as a poison or part of alchemy creations. When eaten raw, they cause intense indigestion, and even heart palpitations. Some have thus used them to create potent poisons. Another more unusual use is in fringe weight loss cures to purge the stomach. The last use is to act as a narcotic, commonly found in cults or groups that embrace transcend experiences. Fortunately for the consumer of the narcotic, dried Shademarsh Mushrooms placed within a liquid, and then drunk, induces visions that are not frightening or debilitating to the body. Instead, one sees strange fonts of wafting, gleaming colors, combined or singular, that radiate from the ground into the air while sparkles flit about in the air. Subjects are capable of freely walking, and tend to feel slightly numb in their extremities, but otherwise are unaffected. However, the substance is still considered dangerous because the illusion of the bright flashes, mixed with the numb extremities, has seen people fall and hurt themselves, if not get into more severe situations.
*Only one known poisoning with the fumes of a shademarsh mushroom has occurred to date. A wealthy merchant bought into his wife’s “relaxment methods” which was meditating as the fumes poured into the room. After nearly a year of the process, he dropped dead and she was going to inherit all his money before she died as well from the same process. Her protection method of placing a cloth bag over her head hadn’t worked and she was just as poisoned as he was.

Trivia
*The purging alchemy which Shademarsh makes an uncommon appearance in is most usually found in Ithania, but also areas of the Regalian Archipelago and among the Minoor, where standards of beauty often demand thin waists, and precisely formed bodies.
*The mushroom is reported to have a very bitter taste when eaten raw.

The Shademarsh Mushroom is an unassuming brown-capped mushroom that can be found growing in the swamplands on several continents. While it was once a harmless fungus, the magical energy that came with the Cataclysm is believed to have twisted it into possessing a range of new traits, and thus new uses. Even though it’s still used in cuisine, the mushroom is now also used in negative alchemy concoctions and used as a narcotic.

Appearance

Shademarsh Mushrooms stand at six inches tall with a cap diameter of four inches. Their stalk is beige, while the cap is a rich brown hue. It has a soft, rubbery texture that is easily broken apart and is distinguishable from other fungi by the short black “hairs” that hang around the rim of the cap. These small growths are easily squashed between one’s fingers, and their exact purpose remains unknown. Most believe they are evidence, or a sign, of whatever mutation or alteration took place within the plant during the Cataclysm, but this is not proven.

Uses and Abilities

Trivia

 • The purging alchemy which Shademarsh makes an uncommon appearance in is most usually found in Ithania, but also areas of the Regalian Archipelago and among the Minoor, where standards of beauty often demand thin waists, and precisely formed bodies.
 • The mushroom is reported to have a very bitter taste when eaten raw.
