Galenata, also called Galena, is found in the humid areas of south and southwestern Aloria, in lands long home to many Races. However, it was the Teledden who discovered the material and made the most use of it, transforming the metal into a powder to add its glittering quality to the faces of nobles and the powerful. Later, the Ailor and Songaskia also sought this substance out, and added the additional use of helping to make pottery. Since the fall of the Essa Empire, Regalia holds a monopoly on the substance, but the Songaskian Masaya has discovered their own independent sources to feed their craving, while the reborn Allorn Empire also has their own methods for extracting the material. Given the obsession with beauty so common to these Races, the material is likely to remain used in Aloria for centuries to come.

History

Galenata is an ancient substance sought after by many peoples, but the first were the Elves of the Allorn Empire. When they reached Hadar, they discovered Galenata in pockets along the coastline, though largely ignored it as they had back home. However, once its beauty applications were revealed, they eagerly sought it out across their territory. The Slizzar themselves rarely used the substance as it clung to their scales in a discomforting way. After the Cataclysm, however, Galenata became even more accessible. As the Chrysant Kingdoms formed on Hadar in the decades after the Cataclysm, Galenata rapidly became one of their primary exports. Most Galenata went to Farahdeen, where upper-class Songaskians used it like the Elves had, as cosmetics for their eyes and face. Eventually, Ailor regions like Ithania also came to prize the material. In 190 AC, Ithanian artists discovered that Galenata also worked in making beautiful pottery glazes which only increased demand. With the collapse of the Essa Empire and the devastation brought by the Chrysant War to Hadar, Hadarian states as a whole have stepped up their role in Galenata mining though mainly at the behest of aggressive Regalian interests. In late 301 AC, Songaskian vessels discovered the coastline of Sendrass also possessed Galenata. For the last several years, small mining operations have broken out along Sendrass’ coast in secret solely for the benefit of the Songaskian state. Considering the obsession of so many to make themselves look beautiful, protect themselves from insects in their harsh climates, and make their pottery look lovely, Galenata is likely to remain popular in Aloria for years to come.

Characteristics

Appearance

Galenata appears like Silver when in its raw, ore-like form. However, it is both darker, and lacks the luster of Silver, and can also be told apart due to small black lines of mineral waving through it. Once it has been processed, the metal in ingot form has a dark gray to silver color scheme with sparkling lines running through it. In its more common, powdered form, the substance has this same color, but instead of twinkling lines has individually twinkling grains.

General Uses

Galenata has two major uses. The first is as a pottery glaze; the end product is similar to lead-glazed earthenware methods. The only difference between the two pottery processes is in some minor temperature differences and that Galenata-glazed pottery is known to sparkle “for a lifetime” as most artists say, lasting longer overall than lead-glazed earthenwares. The second use is in cosmetics, specifically eyeliners, and blushes where the glittering quality of the substance makes it a popular inclusion in several formulas. The latter is often used by the Songaskian upper class, but some Ailor regions like Ithania have started to use it as well. The material is also used in weapons and other crafts, but its coloration is often considered somewhat rugged and lacking refinement, given its marbled scheme of two dark colors and infrequent sparkling.

Trivia

  • Galenata production is chiefly handled by Ailor mining interested in Hadar, though the substance is also found in areas of Daen and Sendrass.
