Kadite, formerly known as “Jet”, is a gem that is rumored to have the ability to protect people from evil spirits or creatures of the Void. Inside the Regalian Archipelago it is widely used in funerary practices and the creation of mourning jewelry. Among worshippers of Estel it is considered to have protective properties and is capable of warding off things that emanate from the Void. Outside of the Crown Isle is it rarely found naturally, though is something that can be found in obscure trade shops for a high price. While the gemstone is common among practitioners of funeral arts, it is never sold cheap and pieces of Kadite jewelry are often passed down as heirlooms to be worn at the funerals of close friends and family.

History

Kadite was originally discovered by Ailor miners deep in coal mines in the Regalian Archipelago in 13 AC. At first, Anglian superstition caused gem cutters to refuse to use it, or even buy it, because they believed it was crystallized Void essence. In 41 AC however, jewelers under the patronage of House Kade took an increased interest in the jewel due to its aesthetic similarity to their masters and began to use it in intricately carved pieces of art, decorated objects and in jewelry. The mineral slowly grew popular with this support from House Kade and the mineral’s popularity was soon reaching into the nobility of other regions. Jewelers on the Crown Isle began referring to the mineral as Kadite, and it has been known by that name ever since. In recent years, the price of Kadite has increased dramatically. The appearance of Silven, an increase of practitioners of the School of Magic, multiple magical events and the rise of the Kade family to the role of Imperial Family has jewelers raising the price of Kadite jewelry constantly.

Characteristics

Appearance

In it’s unrefined state, Kadite appears very similar to coal, though when placed in the hand of an experienced jeweler it can be cut into a number of shapes and forms. While it is very easy to carve and shape, it is difficult to refine with hard details and is most commonly carved into spheres or other geometric shapes.

General Uses

Kadite is essentially only useful in jewelry and decor pieces. This is especially true for large, intricate necklaces and rings where the jewels are inset and are very rarely carved into fancy shapes. In it’s crude and unrefined form, it is uncommonly found on the jewelry of members of the Faith of Estel.

Abilities

While it has never been proven, Kadite is rumored to have the ability to ward off evil spirits and creatures of the Void. As it is difficult to test whether this is true, any testing done by jewelers or otherwise have concluded inconclusive. Other uses for Kadite are currently being tried by the Qadir, but due to the difficulty they have acquiring it, that has not progressed very far.

Trivia

  • House Kade owns approximately one half of all the Kadite jewelry in existence, and no other noble close even comes close to their ownership of this.
  • Rumors have been spread that the Qadir have discovered a way of using Kadite as a conductor for electricity, though it is unknown if they have actually succeeded in using it.
  • A scandal surrounding a favorite jeweler of the Crown Isles was discovered, in which he was making jewelry out of black glass and not Kadite. After this discovery he was executed, and his jewelry was seized by the Regalian state.
