Pattara is a unique material in Aloria, being relatively common to find out in the world, but having several unique traits. It appears similar to Silver (though with a green sheen), but it is indestructible and once forged smells of cut grass. For this reason, it has often been tied to deities of the earth and nature, something causing the material to usually be rejected by conservative Unionists. However, others look past these issues easily to instead benefit from the material’s strength, though it will cost them a pretty penny.

History

Pattara was originally discovered by Ailor in Oldt Era sometime before the Cataclysm, before knowledge of how to work the material spread to the Altalar and with the Ailor into other continents. The Ceardian Ailor saw the unique material as “Earthen Silver” due to its unique scent, and followers of the Union of Earth, nature Oldt Fayth gods and other, now lost faiths that also focused on the ground similarly wielded the material. Its main attraction was its supposed inability to be cracked or broken once forged. It could be made into new weapons, but a blade of Pattara was said to never be broken, and exist as strong as the earth. The Altalar tested these presumed Ailor fictions but found them shockingly accurate. Records do exist that under unnatural and exotic stress, a blade of the material finally did snap, but the circumstances were so obscure and extreme that for all intents and purposes, the metal when forged is indeed unbreakable. Today, this trait is greatly valued in the material, but most Ailor shun it due to its association with the pagan ways of Old Faiths and the Faith of Estel, as the Cielother and Altalar came to adopt the material as a metal touched by nature and thus Estel. Some have looked past the cultural issues with the material due to its unbreakability, though their blades are few in the fights across Aloria.

Characteristics

Appearance

Pattara is commonly found in mines in and around forests and fields, and when extracted, appears highly similar to Silver. However, it is far less brittle than natural Silver, and is also streaked with green. Once refined, the material does indeed look like Silver but it possesses a sharp green hue in the light.

General Uses

Pattara is used exclusively in weapons, and even then, almost exclusively bladed weapons. The material resists the formation processes to make armor, which has long been seen as the one drawback to the unbreakable material. Still, unbreakable arms are valued, though few common soldiers or fighters could ever acquire one without a wealthy patron or significant funds.

Abilities

Pattara as previously stated is unbreakable, which is its most well-known trait. However, the other trait is a curious one that no scholars to date can explain. The material smells of cut grass once it has been refined, the smell remaining on the metal in perpetuity, and one of the clearest ways to distinguish it from normal Silver.

Trivia

  • Pattara is sometimes used in ritual weapons of the various non-Unionist faiths who see the material to be associated with gods or goddesses.
  • Pattara ore is most commonly found in Corontium and Oldt Era, but Essalonia is considered by many to be a worthwhile addition in that count.
