Hutter is a substance commonly associated with the northern lands of Aloria, and with good reason. It is a heavy material with a dark grey coloration to it, with brown lines laced throughout that resemble the age rings on a tree. Additionally, the substance produces a distinct smell of pine resin and needles, the same scent as many great northern forests. Hutter has been long tied to the Union of Earth, but also other pagan faiths since its discovery a century before the Cataclysm. While this has limited its prospects overall due to bias of different Cultures and other dominant faiths that are hostile to its connections, it is still embraced by many groups.
History
Hutter is a substance that exists across The North Belt and the more northern regions of Corontium. However, it took decades if not centuries for it to be discovered. Around 100 BC, as Velheim groups plied the lands and waters of the Regalian Archipelago, they came into the mountainous lands of Drixagh, yet untouched by Humans. While some did hold the odd Dragon Temple, the mountains themselves were largely unmined and so the Velheim began to excavate them. These early efforts provided them much Iron, Ferr-Iron, and other basic minerals, but among the loads was an unidentified metal. While appearing somewhat like Iron, this was soon proven to be incorrect once smelted, and its northern scent caused it to be lauded as a substance connected with the Union of Earth. Others faithful to the Old Gods also connected it to the goddess Lensa for her association with a great, protective tree, often imagined to be pine. Knowledge of the substance spread quickly, with lands such as Ellador and their Velheim populations gradually uncovering the metal for themselves. The Old Gods faithful overall became attached to the substance, but this ultimately limited its use when Unionism grew significantly across the Ailor world. Other pagan cults also adopted the substance, but most were gradually either absorbed into the beliefs of Old Gods as the new centuries following the Cataclysm wore on, or they were converted away from their former faiths. Today, the substance still sees most of its use in the northern parts of the world, or among the pagan faithful of Aloria, in a wide variety of goods.
Characteristics
Appearance
When excavated from the earth, Hutter has a dark grey coloration, laced with light grey and light brown lines. However, once it is refined, the metal retains its dark grey coloration but is laced with dark brown lines within it that resemble tree rings, forming an expanding pattern out from a single point on the metal’s surface.
General Uses
Hutter is used in a wide variety of capacities: from weapons to armor, to jewelry, to religious objects, and to cookware. This mostly takes place among the Northland Cultures of Aloria, but also with those faithful to the Old Gods given the material’s heavy connections to the Union of Earth and the goddess Lensa from the Union of Fire.
Abilities
Like another nature-focused metal, Pattara, Hutter has an ability to smell like nature. However, unlike that metal, Hutter smells of pine resin and needles, a far more northern scent than the fresh-cut grass and flowers of its Daen-originating sister.
Trivia
- Hutter-metal axes were common among the Skagger Horde, and warriors once sniffed them before combat to try and gain a fragment of the wisdom of Handrin, whether they were devoted to his Union or not.
- Hutter frying pans are said to add a bit of their scent into the food made using them, though this was proven false when examined by several culinary experts. Still, they were all ‘Southern’ in the Velheim mindset, and the urban myth has persisted.
